I’ve seen this beer go for upwards of $11 beans at high end restaurants, I am glad to have found it for $1.69, a good deal considering it’s from Brazil. Poured into a pint glass. I had a great review written up for this but I keep getting knocked off the site when trying to upload reviews, so here is a shorter version.

Xingu Black Beer is black, it’s a very black color even up to light, with some faint reds bursting at the sides. Some nice dark tan foam that forms a cap with retention and spray paint lace on the way down. A good looker if I’ve seen one. Scents include chocolate, cocco, grain, faint hop aroma, think earthy, licorice and faint dark fruit.

The dark fruit that I get was present in Dragon Stout from Jamaica, although that beer was god awful. Im guessing this flavor will deteriorate over time causing a sour/putrid taste in Xingu which seems to have better legs. It’s a rotted fruit flavor that I pick up in dark beers from the South America area. Other flavors include chocolate, cocco, licorice, roast, faint coffee and earthy hop taste. Pretty well rounded at this point

Feel is approaching medium but not quite there yet. The carbonation is low making for an easier ride down. This kinda coats the mouth real quick and leaves even quicker. I drank my bottle over a long period of time, I was just not that interested in it. It’s OK beer, but that South American taste is there and, well, it’s just there. One and done.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a pitch black hue with a big 3-finger tan head that slowly dissipates into a solid perisistent lace leaving a great trail down the glass.

S: Slightly nutty malt aroma.

T: Smooth slightly sweet flavor with roasted malt and coffee backbone.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Very smooth black lager. There wasn’t a ton of aroma or flavor – but it was rather simple and easy to drink.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic pint.

A – Deep dark-brown nearly black, with a small half-finger head of beige bubbles which vanished almost instantly. No lacing to speak of. Hmmm.

S – Faint aroma of roasted grains, molasses, and some dark fruits (black cherry). A hint of mustiness.

T – A bolder taste than the appearance and aroma would indicate. Delicately roasted barley, caramel malt, molasses, brown sugar, black cherry, and plum are forward, with a hint of musty hop bite in the finish. Slight but not unpleasant mineral taste throughout, lending a certain uniqueness. Tasty.

M – A little watery, with truly prickly carbonation. (If this has so much carbonation, where is the head on this? Bizarre.) Finishes extremely “wet”. Drinkable, but the bite from the aggressive carbonation is a little distracting.

O – A strange and unique little brew that I really enjoyed despite some flaws. There is definitely something unique in the taste (South American water?) that I haven’t found elsewhere. Would buy again when in the mood.

It's been a while since I've had one of these. One of my co-workers at Hop City said it was one of the better South American beers.
Bottle into pint glass

Appearance: Pours a syrup black color with a good cacao color head. Minimal lacing and a little legging.

Smell: Smells of dark malt, roasted cacao, plums, and licorice.

Taste: It's a very sweet start. I mainly taste cola with a sweet candy licorice finish. It's almost as if you made a cola into a beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: It's a very light and smooth schwarzbier. Decent and very drinkable, but almost like a soda to me.

A - very dark brownish black; quarter of an inch of brown, soft, loose head; good retention

S - faint roast, faint chocolate; apples

T - apples, very faint roasted malts, musty, grainy, yeasty, mildly bitter, grassy in the finish

M - smooth, lightly carbonated, medium bodied

Well, it looks the part but it falls short on flavor. The apple-like, acetaldehyde off flavor is overwhelming and the roasted malt character is underwhelming. Overall, it's not worth a try unless, like me, you just want to try your first beer from Brazil.

Poured into straight pint glass. Poured mostly black with some translucence on the edges, and just had a thin cap of tan head that had low retention and no lacing.

The aroma was pretty neutral, a bit on the malty side and a very soft amount of hops. The flavors featured the same notes, sweet maltiness and gentle hopping.

The body was mostly clean and crisp, but did have a bit of a sticky finish. Drinkability was good, but I tend to like this style. Overall, a fairly average example of the style, worth a shot if you see it or if (like me) you need to tick Brazil off your countries list.

Poured into a Sierra Nevada tumbler. No freshness date.

A- Pours a semi-opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that doesn't want to retain much before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a large patch of surface foam. Halfway decent lacing.

S- Cocoa, some glass aroma and a bit of a booze fume.

T- Very unoffensive roasted malt that goes down easy. Can't detect much smoke since it's classified as a Schwarzbier. Slight hop twinge but nothing too intrusive. Booze isn't as heavy as in the aroma. Trace amounts of oxidation.

M- Full but not heavy at all, if that makes sense. Medium carbonation.

O- The low alcohol and neutral nature makes this a very quaffable dark beer. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't usually enjoy stouts, porters, etc. Nothing too exciting, but worth a try.
