Appearance is clear and deep black with garnet highlights. A thin off-white head lingers for a moment then disappears. No lacing. Aroma and taste has loads of bready malt, burnt sugar, toffee, and caramel with faint notes of flowery hops in the background. Medium mouthfeel with a semi-sweet finish and medium low carbonation. Could use a few more bubbles to help scrub the palate a little more of those malty flavors which would help the drinkability as well. I liked this beer and thought it was a decent example of a schwarzbier if a little on the heavy side.

Served from a 12 oz bottle into a goblet.

A: pours inky black, opaque, with a 1 finger brown/tan head that laces.

S: some roast, with caramel, malt, and toffee also in the aroma.

T: some roast flavor but again dwells on the malt, with estery fruit hints as well. malt flavors include the toffee-ish flavors, with some coffee and caramel, and a slight bit of chocolate. ends with a crisp bitterness.

M: somewhat chewy, but medium feel; average carbonation.

D: very drinkable and enjoyable; while nothing in the realm of mind-blowing, an all around good beer.

Had one at a steakhouse with my meal. Poured little to no head, aroma was a cross between a lager and a stout (as is the style). Taste however leaned more towards the stout side, rather than having the crispness of a lager. Either way, did not really add or detract anything to my meal (besides initial taste, didn't really leave any sort of aftertaste). While not bad, I would say a little boring, and will probably not drink again in the future.

P- Market Cross Pub in Carlisle.

A- an opaque light black color. More like a steel black color. Very little head but it is a nice dark brown color.

S- mostly wood and metallic smell. No real odor is there. Malts and not hoppy at all.

T- at first taste it is like metal but then the prunes and dates come out very nice. It is a sour and tangy type of flavor.

M- very effervescent and carbonated. This beer will also fill you up quite quickly. Not a very good session beer but a nice beer to enjoy and relax with.

D- Its a beer that is nice to have once and awhile but i wouldnt purchase a sixer of it. It might be nice to have for the holidays.

Smell is typical of a lager, sweet with minimal hoppiness. Pours to a slightly translucent brown with a tan head that recedes leaving nice lacing. Taste is also very lager-like with only a slight hint at the end that this beer is black. Very balanced not overly sweet but not at all bitter. The slight roasted flavor at the end is some root beer and roasted malt. Carbonation is a little high making the brew fizz in the mouth. This is a very light tasty brew, not heavy on flavor but high on drinkability.

Pours a nice inch head, light brown in color with a black body

Smells of lightly roasted malts, somewhat metallic almost coin like. Smells arent very dominate or pleasant for that matter.

First taste is of sweet dried prunes or dates. After taste is a bit sour with some malts.

Very nice smooth creamy mouth feel, a little high carbonation but not too much.

Highly drinkable, has a unique taste, not too heavy remaining true to the style. Will buy again.

Pours a dark brown with some nice scarlet edges, the cap is sandy brown and leaves some adequate amounts of lace. The nose smells off in a rotten vegetable way, also smells like onion. The flavors within are not much better. This taste roasted with some underlying vinegar flavors that are a little bit offensive and just don't flow. A very dry finish doesn't help this strange offering. Looks nice and that's about all I can find worthy about this offering.

I got this in a variety pack from World Market.
This beer poured a nice black color. But there was absolutely no smell at all. It tasted like burnt plastic with a little bit of black licorace taste and a bit of chocolate. Had a watery mouth feel for the type.
Maybe I just got a bad bottle. But this I would not buy again.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours an almost opaque black color with a slight head. Little lacing.

Lager-like smell with hints of sweet dark malt.

Slightly lemony taste like a lager. Does have a finish with some light chocolatey malt.

Goes down smoothly. Light body with some residue on the back of the mouth.

Good schwarzbier

I am actually reviewing this beer in Brazil, very exciting. This is pretty much the only non-Pilsner sytle lager available in Brazil, there is a Bramha Black but I didn't see it anywhere. The beer has a nice black body with a creamy off white head. There isn't much aroma, not even a malt or caramel smell, and no lupulo to speak of. There is a nice caramel sweetness to the taste, but little bitterness to balance it out. The mouthfeel is a little more than light, but not overly heavy. I did enjoy a few of these on the TAM happy hours on my flights this week, better than the pilsners available, but not that outstanding.

Wanted so much more out of this one. Dark, dark brown with a puffy tan head. Weak aroma fo hazelnut, malt, and pipe tobacco. Watery taste of caramel, nuts, and a fake chocolate milkshake. There are much better beers out there, or maybe I just don't care for Schwarzbiers.

Appearance: A small tan head. and very black body.
Smell: Roasted malt, licorice. coffee, hint of chocolate and esters.
The taste is slightly sweet with toasted malt hints of coffee and esters. To me it seem like it has a papery taste with a bit of tartness. There seem to be another odd flavor I cant distinguish
Mouthfeel: Alkaline, powdery dusty.
Drinkability: could drink again.
Overall the body is slightly thin and watery. The finish is quick and not lasting

12oz bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a deep brown/black with a finger of tan head. Nose of chocolate and some noble hops, a little fruity. Sweet, slightly roasty flavor. Medium bodied, fairly rich mouthfeel. Lots of sweet malty flavor. Very drinkable.

I drank this from my mom's fridge, not expecting anything. Although it was sitting there for at least 2 years, the only legitimate beef I had with it was that it wasn't extremely carbonated.

The appearance was very nice, black, as it stated with a small layer of head on the top. When angled, it actually was a very deep amber, which only means this was packed with grains rather than roasted.

I couldn't get a lot of smells off of this one, but I think it's party due to the fact that the glass I was using was horrible. However, it smelt slightly hoppy. I had to give it the benefit of the doubt since it was actually hard to smell.

The taste was actually wonderful. Sweet hops came through as well as a light chocolate flavor. Regardless of how long it actually aged, it was a very solid flavor which I really enjoyed.

The mouth feel was nice; not too thick nor thin. In combination with the taste, this was a highly drinkable beer that I was sad to see disappear from the bottle.

By far one of the best darker beers I've had and something that I want to try again, just not as aged. I think some carbonation was lost due to this and a little more would have made me happier.

A- poured into a pint glass and got a nice thick head on the beer. the color is dark black, which matches the label.

S- a good sweet smell to the beer. a little bit fruity and a hint of caramel. detect the hops.

T- a sweet, smokey taste. a small dose of hops in the taste. very light for a beer that was as dark. the malt comes throught.

D- very drinkable beer.

This is a very solid schwarz beer. I like it a lot better than the Ugly Pug, I tested it against.

Pours black with rich, caramel color at the edges. Smallish dark tan head that leaves decent lacing.
Smell is hops, malt (light), touch of wood and smoke.
Taste is hops, malt, sugarcane, peat. OK balance.
Medium body, relatively smooth with a medium effervescence, especially up front. Warming at soft palate after swallowing. A decent brew. More body & flavor than a Negra Modelo but less impressive than a Kostritzer.

Ah, yet another beer that resembles Coke. Decent lacing too.

The aroma is of caramel malts and little more. I'm not complaining, it's just fairly one dimensional.

Where this beer is not one dimensional, however, is in the taste. It's got a big-ass caramel malt backbone. The maltiness is followed by some nice sweetness and a sour finish. It's sweet & sour beer, by god. Delicious.

Mouthfeel is medium and slightly creamy. Good stuff.

Xingu is my favorite schwarz, hands down. It's overpriced at around $10 for a sixer, but it's damn tasty.

Appearance: medium tan head pours deep black.

Smell: roasted malts, caramel, all faint.

Taste: earthy with lighter malts and faint roasted flavor.

Mouthfeel: suprisingly light body with light carbonation.

Drinkability: Nice light tasting beer pairs well with Asian dishes.

Solid Schwarz here, grabbed a single at the local store since the sixer was pushing 10 bucks. Poured into a pint glass, extremely dark with a medium tan head and lots of lacing. Looks like a stout, very nice. Didn't pick up much of an aroma, slightly earthy. Creamy and exceptionally smooth this is easy on the palate. Flavor is good but I wish it were more abundant. Malty and relatively simple, needs more to stand out.

Had a couple of these at a local Brazilian eatery.

Poured from the bottle a deep rich black color with a foamy tan head.

Roasted malt aroma with a hint of berry and earth.

Tastes of roasted malt, chocolate, grain, and a touch of earthiness.

Light-to-medium bodies, smooth, and moderately carbonated.

This was quite enjoyable beer and better than expected. It also went very well with the Brazilian food.

Pours an opaque black with a full head of creamy, light brown foam. Great retention and lots of thick lace.

Nose is very mild, with naught but some slightly grassy hop aroma.

Mouthfeel is absolutely heavenly. Full-bodied and smooth as silk with very little carbonation, this beer just slides over the palate, gracing the taste buds with a mild hint of sweet maltiness perfectly balanced by an equally mild hop bitterness; all of this leads into a pleasant slightly bittersweet finish.

Outstanding. This is one brew that is so mild on the palate yet so full-bodied and creamy that it goes down with no effort and could be enjoyed all night long. Absolutely superb.

12 oz. bottle bought for $1.49 from the Liquor Warehouse,

A: Pours in actuality a very dark brown with a full off-white tan head, good lacing and strong head retention.

S: Chocolate malt, with a hint of lactic acidity and cherry.

T: This has a great flavour to it. Sweet milk chocolate comes out initially and is matched by a bittersweet cherry, with an earthy hop bite at the end with a hint of molasses. As I continue to drink it, it just gets better and better.

M: Soft carbonation, relatively light body and quite easily to drink, has an oily feel at times, off-dry overall, smooth as silk.

D: For the price I wasn't expecting much, but this is really really good. I'll stock up the next time I visit wherever this is sold, I loved it, highly recommended, it is one of the best session beers out there.

Paid $1.99 for a 12 oz bottle from City Beer Store in San Francisco, CA. Poured into a pilsener glass.

Doesn't pour too thick, but appears rather viscous and gritty. Some ingredients separated. A nice, extra frothy tan head of about an inch and a quarter. As suggested in the name, this is an opaque black. Pretty good head retention and lacing.

Smells just a bit on the rank side. Some yeast, carbonation, caramel malts and mild hops. Nothing too strong, average ingredients.

Taste is different and better than I was expecting. The malts balance well with the more mild yeast strain they are working with. Hops not present much. No alcohol.

I like the mouth of this one. A medium body with light carbonation. Goes down moderately thick, nice and smooth and then finishes somewhat watery. This one was almost gone in a couple sips. Would be a great session beer if you are looking for something that is darker and has more flavor. Recommended!

Coming in a 355ml brown bottle, 4.6%abv. BB 28/12/08, served chilled in De Dolle Oerbier's goblet.

A: pours a deeply dark brown to nearly black hue, topped with a fluffy dark tan head with good retention.
S: a faint hint of hop resins and a clean touch of lager come on top of brown sugar, Chinese grass-jelly, and a tinge of treacle. Quite simplistic, gearing towards the malt side and quite sweet.
T: quite simply, the taste is semi-sweet and thin-bodied throughout, decorated with random tastes of sweetened mashed kidney beans, mild herbs as used in Chinese grass-jelly, unidentified dark fruits, and a light metallic touch; slightly chewy and sour in the finish. BTW, where is the roastiness from black malts that is supposedly an intrinsic character of any black beer?
M&D: fizzy and slightly fluffy on the texture, quite lively but overall too thin in body. The only goodie about this beer is that the flavour doesn't come too cloying or unpleasant, staying pretty "neutral" throughout the drink. That said, there's very precious little in this beer that my palate agrees with, hence not recommended.
