New York

4.65/5  rDev +33.6%
look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 5 | overall: 5

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. There is no freshness date or abv on the label.

Appearance: It pours into the glass a very dark brown/black color and when held up to the light it shows very dark crimson highlights. On top sits a nice tan head of slow fading foam. A thin cap hangs on to the end. Lacing is mostly slick but there is some sticky lace just up at the top of the glass.

Smell: Sweet roasted barley and bready notes fill the nose. Also there are hints of raw grain and even some very slight white grape and peach candy notes.

Taste/Palate: Just as the aroma suggests there is a good sweet roasted malty character. I also picked up the fruity notes of white grape and sugar covered peach gummy candy. The body is quite easy drinking, about a light medium. Its texture is some with a light or mellow, yet still active carbonation.

Notes: This beer really surprised me. It was very tasty with some nice flavor nuances or complexity while still having a modest body that is very drinkable.

Ja, ist der schwartzer this afternoon, thanks to tone77 and his insistence that bottled beer will keep me from turning into a total CANFreak. Hey, no problem, because once you've had black, you're never going back.

Several more memories of my misspent youth in the navy come roaring back on that one. We were in Africa and the only talent that was available was black and I was hesitant, not out of prejudice, but simply because it was what is now referred to as "The Strange". I was pleasantly surprised and I learned a valuable lesson - all p***y is pink! Flash forward six/seven years to late-December liberty in southern France and I could not decide between the black one and the white one, so I went with the Salt 'n' Pepa combo platter. Extra was definitely extra, but well worth it. Oh, wait. "Black" refers to something else in this case?!? In the immortal words of Emily Litella, "Never mind."

This was a beer drinker's beer! My aggro pour resulted in two heavy-duty fingers of deep-brown head with retention that could only be pierced by a jackhammer. Color was inky, jet black that only allowed a bit of light at the edges of the glass. Black as night! Black as the Ace of Spades! Black as a witch's heart at the bottom of a well! Even the white bits was black! I may get an Ace of Spades tattooed on my shoulder, or one of my ass cheeks, or better, on the inside of my thigh to let people know how I roll. Time for some accompanying music - you guessed it, Motorhead and "The Ace of Spades". Nose had a slightly grassy hoppiness and a slight malty sweetness. Mouthfeel was silky smooth with a mild caramel sweetness in the mouth and on the tongue. Finish had the same caramel sweetness but accompanied by a light hoppiness. GOOD!

very dark, like coffee. has a bitterness that is delightful. Hard to find, but Anderson's General Store carries it. This is a standard in my fridge. I generally go for lighter and stronger Belgian beers, like Trappist. I came across this at Turning Stone Casino near Syracuse NY and looked hard to find it locally. Their website is nice, leave a comment and they actualy respond with a thank you.
Small company who cares about their beer. (Probably made with water droplets off of exotic plants) just kidding there :)

Absolutely stunning surprise. Part of my "...of the month" selection that fellow BA (and brother) DK sent me. Wow. Gorgeous deep charcoal brown in the glass with a soft, billowy tan (almost brown) head. A hint of rich malt in the nose, but not like a stout. Rather, when the glass is raised and tasted, there is a wonderful smoothness about the beer that is like drinking black silk. Not sweet, but flavorful; not complex, but highly drinkable. And with a reasonable ABV, it was like a "perfect storm" of drinkability for me. Fanstastic. And to think I passed on this offering from Brazil so many times in the store. Rich malt, with just a tiny bit of bitterness in the aftertaste to keep the tastebuds wanting more. Fortunately, I have two more bottles. Then I'll have to head to the store for more. Those Brazilians know how to brew great beer. I had no idea.

This brew is fantastic. It is also fairly expensive if you are in middle-america (roughly $11.00 per sixer). However, the taste is nothing like you would imagine from looking at it. It is pitch black, with almost no translucense (you can hardly see light pass through it). It tasts very thin, very light, and very sweet on the exhale. I'd call it a plum taste, or a "datey" perhaps. Definitley worth a try. I heard that Brazil has more breweries than anywhere else, though America gets the least of it's imports. Not sure how true that is, but this beer is definitely one to be proud to have under your belt.

Xingu is a surprisingly unique brew that is difficult to classify. It is not a stout nor is it a dark ale. It is simply a beer that is very dark.

I was unsure what to expect from a Brazilian beer and admit I was a bit hesitant to try. After hearing so many good things, I decided to give it a shot.

On to the beer...

Poured in a glass cup the tan head soon dissolves into a thin ring.

The scent is faint but with a hint of sweetness. I did not taste an overwhelming amount of hops, rather, there was a slight caramel like flavor...this went down very smoothly.

After my first, I went on to the second. No lingering aftertaste, no skunkyness, or tree barkyness found in many other darker beers/ales.

Extremely drinkable. This would replace my "default beer" if it were widely available in supermarkets.

Default beer hint: "The one and only"

Bottom line...you need to try this beer.

Don't let the color or name scare you; it's a dark black beer that's incredibly smooth and drinkable. Doesn't leave that dark beer aftertaste (which I enjoy, myself).

If you see it, I recommend giving it a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Never judge... aw hell, you know the rest.

Coal-black with a thin, tight-bubbled tan head. Deep malt nose. Peeking it's head from behind a profoundly roasted barley flavor is a lurking sweetness. A complex and tasty brew from our southern neighbors. Body on the light side is characteristic of the style. This won't be the last time I enjoy a Xingu.

Pours an opaque black with a full head of creamy, light brown foam. Great retention and lots of thick lace.

Nose is very mild, with naught but some slightly grassy hop aroma.

Mouthfeel is absolutely heavenly. Full-bodied and smooth as silk with very little carbonation, this beer just slides over the palate, gracing the taste buds with a mild hint of sweet maltiness perfectly balanced by an equally mild hop bitterness; all of this leads into a pleasant slightly bittersweet finish.

Outstanding. This is one brew that is so mild on the palate yet so full-bodied and creamy that it goes down with no effort and could be enjoyed all night long. Absolutely superb.

Poured into a flute glass.

A- Pitch black except for tints of red when held up to direct light. Coca Cola hue. One finger mocha head. Some lacing.

S- Extremly complex. Initially Cofee, roasted malt and an odd cider smell. As it warms, sake and green apples dominate.

T- Initially Coffee, a green apple cider notes, and roasted malt. As it warms begins to taste of sake and vinegar with a touch of roasted malt.

M- Light bodied.

O- Complex. Tasty. Worth a try.
