Thought I was going to be tasting something different. The name suggests that this is a Black Beer. I didn't know that it was a Schwarzbier. If so, I might have looked else where. Anyway...

The Review....

So, Schwarzbier rely on hops to add bitterness instead of malt. Huh!

Well, this beer is a complete dark Bock in my opinion. No hops in there. I taste Bock but on a darker note. It is like they took a Bock beer and put it in a pan and slowly cooked it until it started to carmelize. No burned flavor...just a Dark Bock beer. Impressed...Naw. For $9.99 a 6 pack, there are sooo many better beers out there with much more flavor.

Drinkability is high because of the lower ABV level but enough to keep me drinking it. Not at all. I have one bottle left....anybody want it, come and get it.

Xingu Black Beer (Brazil) pours a lofty tan head over a black brew (though it's rosy
up to the light). Carbonation is hard to gague, and the nose is just a bit of light barley
malt. The flavor is better than the nose lets on- a bit of sweetish molasses up front with
a ghost of hop in the finish. Pretty one dimensional. Mouthfeel is crisp and clean. Frankly,
something this dark should have a little more going on than this does. By all means, if
it's on sale, get a sixer if you're gonna mow the lawn, but there's nothing special here.

Light black, slightly less than opaque color. Smell is light skunky roasted malt with a hint of chocolateyness. Taste is sweet, sweet roasty malt, with more body than most schwarzbiers. Maybe a touch sweeter than necessary and consequently a bit cloying. May try again some day.

It pours a dark, dank brown, flashing deep ruby at the borders. Two fingers of thin light brown head shrink away quickly to a foamy tan puddle. Vertical veins of lacing descend down the inside of the glass.

In the aroma, a bittersweet spike of roasted malt juts out, along with the dry bitter bite of very indistinct hops.

Upon sipping, as surprisingly thin but virtually cloying dark malt sweetness morphs promptly into a muted vinegary sourness on the sides of the tongue. A syrupy sugar river runs through the center, never really swerving until a flat, plastic off-note partners with it at the finish. Simply, it's saccharin, and devoid of much else.

Medium bdoied, the dense sweetness clings stickily, like cloying, tongue-numbing napalm. With this flavor profile, that's not so good.

It's the deep clingy sweetness of rich roasted malt along with....nothing else. the flavor is one-dimensional, it cloys almost bitingly, and ity gives no reason to return for more. It's a dessert all by itself, and not an especially good one. I happen to love Brazilian cuisine, but if this is any indicator, I won't be matching it to any Brazilian beers. I can't believe they drink a lot of this during Carnival, but if they do, I'm staying home. Well, I'm not going anyway, but you know what I mean.

Black and opaque, mild carbonation with little head retention. Cooked corn aroma. Slightly sweet middle progressing to an even sweeter finish. Some tartness in the end (?) Very under hopped. Medium body. Tastes like a slightly sweeter version of an American adjunct lager.

Not quite black, more of a deep deep brown. Light cocoa colored head, which dissipates quickly.

Not picking up much of an aroma. Light roasted grains, and some random sweetness.

Saccharin sweet, tastes a bit artificial. Not too bad, but then again, that's really not a compliment is it? Some good hopping helps balance out the sweetness. Honestly, this isn't an offensive beer really, but it's very limited in taste. Sweet and hoppy could have been my entire taste entry.

High carbonation, very lively. Light bodied character. Yep, that's about all I can say here.

I will only be drinking this beer again because I purchased a sixer. I will not buy another. It's not that it's awful, because it's not. If I opened a brewpub today and this was my first beer served, I would be happy to have it as a starting point. Then I would make it better. Not for me. Cheers.

Didn’t get much aroma. Poured from a bottle, color was was dark brown/black with hint of red at bottom. Slight chocolate and malt taste, and okay finish, although it tasted a little watery. Not bad, but just an average beer where nothing really jumped out at me.

Poured a 12 ounce bottle into a glass mug.

A: Pours a black body with a small, tan head with ok retention overall and some lacing along the sides of the glass.

S: A very malty smell with some bready undertones. Nothing overly impressive.

T: A sweet, juice taste with no malt character or roasted notes. Seemed like this beer still needed to be fermented.

M: A fairly light and watery mouthfeel overall that was nothing too impressive.

D: A not too drinkable beer overall. Seemed a little too sweet and not fermented. The carbonation that was evident felt like it was added later and not even partially developed naturally. Not a very impressive beer at all.

Picked this up in a build your own six pack at whole foods. The name seemed interesting. Poured into a standard pint glass.

A - Very very dark brown to near black in color. One finger of tan head that takes its time dissipating. Nice lacing on glass, but it doesn't stick, so you have to be looking for it.

S - Very nice smell actually. Sort of like grapes with alcohol in the background. Very similar to wine. Maybe merlot. Not much else, but this is a good start.

T - Kind of a disappointment to be honest. Seems very watered down. Roasted malts is just about all I taste. Not much character. The finish is not hoppy but sort of medicinal. I realize this style of beer is supposed to be more refreshing, but this was not.

M - Watery on the palate. Light bodied, and finishes dry. Pretty smooth i guess, but in a "this is it?" sort of way.

D - Easy to drink for sure, but because the taste and mouthfeel are disappointing, I couldn't drink more than one of these in a night. I was looking for something else to drink after I finished this.

Final Thoughts - Despite the way it looks, this is not a stout or a porter, but a black beer; a lager I think. So it shouldn't be judged as one. I know it isn't supposed to be a very heavy or complex beer, but this still seemed sub-par to me and not very refreshing. The smell was the best part of this beer.

Decent beer but I expected more. The smell lacks any depth. Additionally the taste is a bit flat. Not bad but certainly not an upper tier beer. The beer had a good pour and has deep black color. I have never tried a beer from Brazil before so had no previous expectations. Given the color and limited information you may initailly expect a stout but not fair comparision. Again decent beer but for the money may want to steer in different direction.

Another beer that gives me some melancholic feelings. Great label with export appeal.
Black color with a caramel head with medium retention.
Very faint aroma of caramel and toasted malts.
Sweet malty flavor with hints of caramel, cola, toasted malts and adjuncts, its original sin.
Dry with a medium bitterness aftertaste, and residual toasted notes.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Not bad, though could be less sweet and the adjunct plus caramel addition does not help.

A very drinkable, if not overly impressive, beer. Practically black in appearance with a thin, lacy head this beer has a sort-of sweetness to it that I find annoying after a couple of sips. It is light enough flavor-wise to be a very drinkable beer, but for my money, I'd rather go a different route. Whoever it was that said it was like a thinner version of a stout or porter was right on. Worth a try, but nothing to write home about.

This is a shwarzbier in my opinion. And as far as Shwarzbier's go, this one's not very good. Nothing about it stood out other than the fact that it quenched thirst. The flavor was just of crappy malts an no hops. This was one the bartender and Tulune's recommended, and I'm dissapointed.

A - Completely black with a rocky light brown head. Nice retention and lots of sticky lacing.

S - The typical burnt toast aroma found in most schwarzbiers, along with an interesting dark fruit smell (raisin or prune?). A slight soapiness is also present, but not enough to be offputting.

T - Very little roasted character like I would expect from the style. It starts with a malty sweetness that fades into a bittersweet raisin flavor. The soapiness noticed in the nose is also present here as well, and it's not welcome at all.

M - Very light body without much carbonation.

D - I suppose you could say this is drinkable based on the light body and low abv, but the flavor just isn't up to par. I'm a big fan of schwarzbiers, but this is easily the worst that I've tried. The only good thing that came of this was getting to check Brazil off my reviews list. :)

Xingu came in a light weight 12 ounce bottle. The color was opaque chocolate brown with some coppery hue. The aroma was weak with whiffs of chocolate and the head was not impressive. The taste was chocolatey with traces of molasses. A decent hop bite livened it up a bit. The mouthfeel was a litle oily and the finsh was dry and unexciting.
I don't know what I was expecting, maybe some exotic Brazilian tastes. In the end I was just a little disappointed with this beer.

I had really high hopes for this one and it simply just didn't deliver. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't what I thought it would be, either. It poured up rather nicely an extremely dark brown, nearly black, with a big, frothy head like an aggressively poured glass of soda. The smell wasn't very lively at all, contrary to what I have heard others say. It was mostly bready, with a little bit of roasted cereal and that's about it. Not bad, but could have been much better. Taste wasn't even average for the style, in my opinion. There was a bit of sweet malt, and what seemed like a honey-ish note towards the finish, but overall, I wasn't very impressed. Mouthfeel is very thin and lifeless. It wasn't offensive, but all thing considered, there should have been more body in this beer. I must say, this one let me down a little. Not a bad beer at all, but not a very good schwartz.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with a very small off-white head. There's a bit of roasted malt smell, but mostly it smells just like a typical macro lager, like grain and sweet malt. Also, the aroma is a bit weak. It tastes a bit sour, and also a little like sweet malt and grain. Not impressive at all. Mouthfeel is light/medium, with good carbonation. Drinkability isn't good, as the weird sour taste makes it hard to drink. I don't know if this was a bad batch/bottle, but this really wasn't good at all. The beer looked nice, but it went downhill from there.
