A - Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Very little head. Completely opaque black.

S - Roasted malts very apparent in the nose but there is a sweetness right at first from dark fruits.

T - All of the flavors mentioned in the nose.

M - Thick mouthfeel but not as creamy as i expected. Smooth with nearly zero carbonation.

O - Interesting and unique beer but nothing pops out to me as excellent. I bet this review would change for the better if i had it on tap in Rio.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass.

Dark brown coming out of the bottle, but near black and nearly opaque in the glass. Nice looking 1-finger tan head dissipates quickly leaving a minimal top coat and lacing.

Aroma: quite mild but spicier than expected, leaving the impression of hops and medium-roasted barley.

T: not very good as it first hits the tongue, but this is soon replaced by a well-balanced, if rather simple, flavor of medium and dark malts tinged with a spiciness from hops or something else. No smoke or burnt qualities. Approaches 4.

M: super smooth despite a slightly aggressive level of carbonation. Medium+ body.

O: An enjoyable and very drinkable black beer with a fine mouthfeel but a weak aroma.

From notes on 02/22/12:
No freshness date; Poured in a pint glass.

A - Less than 1/2" of tan carbonated head that doesn't last long; Very dark brown in color with just a little garnet glow when held to the light; Few spots of lacing left in the glass

S - Pretty faint aroma overall; Notes of sweet caramel, raspberry-like fruits, leafy hops, and just a bit of chocolate

T - Much like the aroma, but with more presence; Flavors include sweet caramel, raspberry-like fruits, leafy hops, and a bit more chocolate than the smell, especially in the finish; The taste seems a bit watered down

M - Tons of zesty and slightly burning carbonation; Light bodied; Behind all of the sharp carbonation, the beer has a somewhat smooth mouthfeel

O - I thought this was a solid schwarzbier that fits right in the middle of the pack for the style. No quality of this beer really stood out, but the flavor was pleasant and light enough to allow for enjoyment in numbers. Although this brew wouldn't be my preference for the style, I still think it's worth a look.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a nonic glass.

Pour leaves a one inch head which quickly fades with little to no lacing.

Smells like...almost nothing. Faint hints of coffee-ish dark malt.

Tastes like...very similar to the nose. Super super light. I like schwarzbiers for their light but roasty profile, but this is incredibly light. Hints of coffee, chocolate, and bud light.

Overall mouthfeel was OK. Average carbonation, nothing offensive at all, nothing that impresses either.

I did not really enjoy this beer, just came up short for me.

A: very dark brown body. frothy head is light brown. retention is minimal and lacing is average.

S: the malt is there, but not nearly as aggressive as one would expect from this dark body. clean lager-like aromas mellow out any sharp sweetness or roast.

T: vanilla mixes with sweet unfermented roasty sugars. a little bit of marshmallow. not getting too much distinctive hop flavor, however the grain seems to be balanced nicely. finish is sweet.

M: the body is a bit silky which i found a little surprising for a lager, however i enjoy it. medium bodied.

D: really enjoyable brew. i find this mostly malt-centric, but it is certainly not overpowering.

So... The dude at one of the 'beer' stores in town (if you've been to lubbock you understand the quotation marks around that) suggested I try this, and I figured why the hell not.

It pours a rich dark... somewhere between mahogany and black. It's a pretty colour. Middling head, that fades, leaving minimal lacing as I sip.

The nose is... It's actually kind of hard to pin down exactly what the flavours I'm getting here are. There's certainly a burning maltiness to it, somewhere between sweet and black. Some sort of vegetation underlying it, but I can't quite decide what. Unique (at least through my experience)

The taste follows suit. It tastes... sweet and black. But not like sweet in a sugary sweet way per se, again difficult for me to place exactly. There's certainly some caramel in there, some burnt malt notes, and almost a twist of sour in there. I'm having a hard time pinning this one down. It is certainly unique.

Not quite as smoothe as the appearance might suggest, but certainly drinkable. Thinner than my instincts expected from a beer this colour.
This is a different beer. It's not bad by any means, though I probably wouldn't kick any of my current regulars out to make room for it in the rotation. Certainly worth checking out if you are looking to explore a little bit. The comparisons on here tend to be to a black lager, and I definitely see that. Give it a try.
