"Chocolate stout is a satisfyingly rich, dark and creamy stout just loaded with roasted flavors. We added just a subtle touch of chocolate for a tasty treat. This is a great sipping beer for those cold winter nights." Brewed in the style of an American Stout. Available in 22 oz. bottles. Packed together with two other Gnarly Oak beers and available as a winter release variety pack with a Gnarly Oak glass.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a Gnarly Oak glass. Served above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam head of a mocha brown color over a very dark brown body with soft maple highlights. Retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. 4
(Smell) Mild lactose sweetness, buttery and syrupy notes of caramel malt, toffee and cocoa. Mild roastiness with some notes of coffee, very subtle bitterness from the soft edge of the roast, very mild graininess and a delicate earthy hop aroma. The potential for flavor looks very sweet at this point. Potency is modest. 3.5
(Taste) The flavor falls very similar to the aroma. Medium-bodied moderate roasted barley with undercurrents of chocolate, coffee and toasted caramel, thickened up with a smooth chewy sweetness of lactose sugars and cocoa syrup. The edge of the roasted grain provides a decent balance to the sweetness keeping this beer drinking smoothly, even if it has a surprisingly heavier body for a light gravity stout. 3.75
(Mouthfeel) Texture is silky smooth, moderately chewy and lightly dry. Carbonation is soft, generating a light creaminess and a moderate frothiness. Body is medium+ for the style, shy of heavy overall. Balance is slightly sweet over earthy bitter. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters to note. 3.75
(Overall) I think this was a very decent stout with nice flavor and a fair balance, although it suffers from some of the same issues that the bock does, notably a heavy emphasis on sweetness which does cut down the drinkability somewhat and, as a surprisingly rare issue in stouts, much heavier-bodied for the alcohol profile than I think was necessary. Overall, I found the beer more enjoyable than not, and consider it, not surprisingly, the gem of the Gnarly Oak variety pack. Perhaps not worth going out of your way for, especially if you have to buy the other beers with it, but sold individually this is the best one of them all. If you find it for $2, it's a steal. 3.75

Bought a 3 pack of Gnarly Heads from my local Walgreens that included a nice Gnarly Oak glass. The beer poured a beautiful charcoal black color. Very deep black with a touch of amber. The aroma is of quality cocoa and charred wood, which makes for a very intense sensation. The beer has a perfect amount of head and is very frothy in a good way. The mouth feel is gentle and not overpowering from the contributing tastes and aromas and is a very good beer. This was my first brew from Gnarly Oak and am looking forward to trying the other two from the gift set.

Pours a very dark black, with ruby highlights into the provided Gnarly Oak glassware. There's a fair head of tan bubbles, but the lace here is nonexistent.
Aroma is dark cocoa, with some roasty char. Not bad, but not world class, either.
Taste here is sweet and malty for sure. The cocoa powder comes across for certain, but it all turns out rather simple and one-dimensional. And although this is not a bad brew by any means, it does need some fine-tuning to balance and smooth out that sweetness.
