12 ounce bottle. Berghoff Lager pours out a slightly hazy golden color topped with a large, white head. Fruity apple aroma with some spicy hops. Thin malt flavor, though compared to a macro this would be quite the malty brew. Fruitiness comes in at the middle. There's some corny adjunct flavor too. Very little hop flavor, although I detect hops in the aroma. This beer gets worse as it warms, so drink fast.

Bright goldenrod pour with a thin ring of head around the top of the glass. Nice color, but the nearly complete lack of head is no good. Sweet cereal grain nose along with some grassy hop notes.
First sip features some crystal malt cereal grainy sweetness along with a smattering of grassy hop bitterness on the back of the palate. Straight up, no frills lager...more flavor than most, but it's still not my cup 'o tea.
Mouthfeel has a medium body and is nice and smooth. This is not a bad American lager..however it's not a style I particularly enjoy and I have no plans to return to this brew. Worth a try and would be a good stepping stone to convert the BMC crowd.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. No freshness date.
Appearance: Light golden beer with a touch of haze (not good for the style) and a thin tight foam head -- sticks and stays a little bit.
Smell: Fruity esters, light spicy hops and toasty grains in the background.
Taste: Very creamy on the palate, smooth and near full-bodied in its texture. Malt sweetness is dextriny and a bit bland. This is followed by a crisp citrus rind hop bitterness that stings the palate for a brief second -- a little bit of spice, too. Fruity ester flavours and a hidden alcohol flavour can be detected, perhaps too much. The beer ends with grain tannins and dryness as a result.
Notes: A no great shakes beer. A nice clean finish would have been ideal. Worth a try though for you lager lovers out there. 5.5%abv.

I found this one on tap at the Berghoff Cafe in the Ohare International Airport. I must say that this beer really sucks. It smelt very skunky, and it was served on tap for crying out loud. It looks just like on run of the mill BMC. It tasted very watery and uninteresting. I'm told that some people really like this beer. I sure hope I just got a bad one.

12 oz bottle pours a clear golden body with a small white head that leaves some skimpy patch lacing. Aroma has a bready malt sweetness and hints of floral hops. Light body has medium carbonation. Taste has a vague malt sweetness balanced by a fleeting spicy hop bitterness. Slight metallic aftertaste. Very average.

(Served in an American pint glass)
A- This beer has a golden yellow body with a thick creamy smooth white head. There is a strong carbonation of big bubbles racing to the surface.
S- The smell of pale malt and bitter noble hops is smooth and light.
T- The taste if some light malt with a faint corn taste followed by some bitterness in the finish with little hop taste. There is a strong carbonic bite to the finish that has a faint hint of tonic water.
M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a fizz texture at the finish.
D- The flavor was bland except for the sharp bitterness at the end that didn't have any hop flavor.

First brew from Berghoff that I've ever had as my local store just started carrying them. Pours a golden with a small 1 finger creamy white head that doesn't hold for more than a couple of minutes. Smell was very sweet and malty, reminded me of a Carlsberg or something of similiar ilk. Taste was pretty bland. There is a presence of sweet malt, but where is some hoppiness?? Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side as well. I wonder if this is much better insanely fresh, as it does not do much for me as is. Average beer.

This beer was poured into a pint glass at 41° from a 12 ounce bottle with no apparent date information. Two fingers of head were produced from the pour with slight lacing. The beer was clear and pale gold with limited carbonation.
Crisp clean hops were sensed during the pour but subsided somewhat later during my smell attempts.
There was a sweet honey malt taste with a minor hop presence in the background. Sweetness really dominated with additional tasting.
This beer was light as could be expected with caramel sweetness hanging around for just a little making it refreshing and inviting.
I was surprised by the sweetness and different taste than the usual lager. While this is not an overwhelming beer it is one to keep in mind for those hot summer days when you need a thirst quencher or you just need something a slight cut above at a good price. This was picked up as part of a mixed Berghoff sixer for $6.99.

Grabbed a bottle out of my parents' fridge while housesitting. They love this stuff, so it's always there. I wish they'd get their Dark Beer, which is much better, but they don't like "such heavy beer".
Pours golden yellow with a bit of white head. Smells like...well..."beer". Adjuncty corn, a bit of malt, that's about as complex as it gets. Taste...see previous statement. Typical macro mouthfeel, maybe a little thicker. Overall, just a typical all malt lager, better than a macro, but no real character. It's beer, it'll get you drunk.

This pale golden lager poured with minimal lacing and an overly sweet corn odor - definitely a sign of an adjunct lager with cheaper malts. Not appetizing to start with! Taste is equally sweet and corny, even a bit cidery, though this could've been a less-than-fresh bottle I sampled. Not one I'd recommend.

Berghoff Original Lager Beer pours a crystal-clear amber body with golden highlights beneath a long-lasting head of creamy white froth that leaves average lacing behind. It's sweetish in the nose with some grainy malt and floral hops. The body is medium and it's gently crisp across the palate. The flavor is clean and direct, combining the sweet, just slightly caramelish, and grainy malt with some spicy, grassy, and floral hops over a stiff bitterness. It finishes drying, with a passing note of sweet malt that erodes quickly, leaving behind some grassy hops and a snappy bitterness. It's not complex, but it is flavorful and satiating. Nicely done!

Slightly offputting, yet theres some attraction to it. Theres a nice golden pour, certainly darker than any mega-lager. Theres minimal bubbling under a thin head. Taste seems a bit "old-timey;" I would have guessed a pre-Prohibition lager with minimal adjunct, but their website doesnt suggest this. The site also says theyre now using Spalt and Tettnang hops instead of "domestic." At 20 IBUs, twice that of their pilsner, I can taste it. This is a beer that wants to be liked, but it demands an attitude adjustment by the drinker.

This beer had a small sized white creamy head with fine-small sized bubbles. The body clear with carbonation. The hue was gold. The nose was skunky and the flavor was boring. The mouthfeel smooth, thin, watery, and light bodied. There was good lacing with this beer; however, it definitely lacked character.

Sampled at the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago, one of two taps availlable, the "Haus Lager" and "Haus Dark".
I was told these are both Berghoff beers, most likely not contract-brewed for Billy Goat.
Draft arrives in a 12oz mug. Light white head is present, fizzy foam. Head remains for the duration of the glass. Body is a light clear yellow.
Corn and metallic aroma. Not too nice.
Taste is bland and borderline inoffensive. Standard malt and light corn. Slightly below average.
It's watery and fizzy, drinkable but not the best lager out there by a longshot.
If you're at the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago, go for the "Haus Dark" tap.

Appearance - Nice bright, clear gold. Head is soapy white, quickly dissipating. Obvious high carbonation. Better than most in style.
Smell - Faint. Little bit of sweet malt scent. Might be a little yeast. Nothing very prominent.
Taste - Very sweet. Prominent malt for style. Hops much less prominent - not enough to provide balance. Nothing complex about this beer, just sweet corny malt.
Mouthfeel - Watery, but not as watery as many american lagers. Highly carbonated.
Drinkability - Benefits from actually having a flavor. This alone makes it better than many of its macro-brewed ilk. Flavor it has, however, isn't all that great. One note - sweet malt. Properly used only in an emergency.

Poured a glowing bronze, but things went downhill from there. Apple cider aroma. The flavor is very clean . . . yup, pretty clean . . . in fact, so clean that it has very little flavor of note. A bit of sweet/tart/bitter on the tongue at the front and then "poof" it is gone, leaving but a vague light bitterness in the wake. Not bad, just not there.

Came in a silver and green labelled bottle, 5.5% abv. Well now, this is a damn sight better than the Berghoff pilsner I had recently sampled. Pours out a crystal clear light amber hue, small fizzle of white foam that disappears just as quickly. There isn't much of an aroma to this Original Lager, but what there is seems to be a bit off, a touch of grain, some corn, and a bit of veg. The flavour is crisp and a bit sweet, with a dry finish. Nothing exceptional, but it is certainly passable, a step up from macros. Some off-flavours start to come out in the aftertaste however, the cooked veggies. The mouthfeel is as watery as most Berghoff offerings, but it tends to suit this lager more than the other styles, and the dry finish redeems it somewhat. For the price I'd buy a different lager if that's what I had a hankering for at the moment, but if offered one of these I'd certainly accept it.

Sampled at the Berghoff restaurant in Chicago O'Hare airport.
The beer is a bit darker than a mass market American lager. This is a true gold with a white head.
Smell is malty and fruity and very pleasant to the nose. There is a hint of herbal hop in the scent but this is a malt oriented beer.
Taste is drier than expected from the scent. Maybe a tiny bit of sweetness here but not really. Fruity flavor comes out very nicely and reminds me more of a British pale ale than a lager. Hops show up as a floral flavor and the finish bitterness in the after taste.
Mouthfeel is there firm but not heavy.
Drinkability is quite good tasty and not fatiguing to the taste buds.

Pours straw golden yellow with a thin, fizzly head that immediately disappears to a few carbonated bubbles, then disappears completely.
It smells similar to a typical macro. Some sweet malt and overprocessed hops.
Tastes like a macro, too. Not a terrible one, though. Some sweet malt and a touch of processed, almost chemical-like, hops. Some grassy hints vaguely make a short-lived appearance. There is an adjunct-like quality to it. Some fruitiness tries to emerge, but is all but lost.
The feel is thin. Could be refreshing on a very hot day, but so could many others...
It claims to be craft brewed, but it is so close to a mediocre-at-best macro lager that it could almost be confused for one.
Glad that my local all-malt is Brooklyn Lager. This one falls short.

Along time beer fan, I've always just passed Berghoff whenever I've seen it at the store... not paying much attention. After finally giving the "Original Lager" a try, I've come to find it as a modest beer.
It poured a very opaque light golden color. The lace was thin, consistent, and very dense. It's smell is weak, far from overwhelming. Perhaps too light. The mouthfeel is average. It has a rather strong carmel taste along with wheat. The lack of a strong scent is definitely deceiving as it has heavy tastes. It is a good beer that can be consumed by the multiples. After I seen that they offer other unusual brews like Oktoberfest's and such, I will keep on the lookout for some of their other offerings.
Bought at Jewel Osco, Roosevelt & Ashland, Chicago

On tap 01/17/06 at the Berghoff Cafe in O'Hare Airport in Chicago, IL.
Clear pale straw color, decent carbonation, and a low white ringed head. Standard lager malt and light adjunct aroma and flavor; little to no hop character. Light bodied, crisp, and clean.
Pass... not much more memorable than a higher end macro.
Per JH website:
Malts: Brewers Two-Row, Carapils, Caramel
Hops: German Spalt, Tettnang

A: The appearance was very average. It had a nice deep gold, but the head died very quickly.
S: I could barely smell anything. I could only smell a faint bite of sweet malts.
T: I looked at the bottle and thought the beer was a AML. I was surprised by the taste and found out it was an American All-Malt Lager. It was really malty and therefore kinda unbalance. AAMLs just don't do it for me.
M: There is some nice thickness here.
D: For being unbalance it is fairly drinkable.
