Dark reddish brown, good initial head that disappears quickly with no trace.

Vague nutty and corn scent.

Cola, caramel, corn, sugar, with a finish of...cigarette smoke. Cloying.

Watery and flat as all get out.

Not impressed. Mouthfeel needs a serious boost, and the flavors seem fake.

Billy Bock to me is Minhas' best product, for its price one can consider trying it as I don't believe it to be sink drain fodder.

A. poured a nice light brown, foamy light tan head that dissipated quickly. Maybe it's my beer glasses, but it did leave a bit of lace throughout the drink. Overall, not bad, liked the color

S: a sweet, malty smell. Not offensive and not skunky like a lot of this breweries products. Nothing special though.

T: this beer's best part! And the most important part it scores well on with me. I liked the taste, it was a bitter malt taste lacking the overpowering sweet taste that Minhas is infamous for.

M: it's smooth and has a decent body to it, it's not sticky and doesn't lingure, nor is it so incredibly thin that you don't even know you're drinking it.

D: Pretty good, my favorite beer from Minhas, unfortunately they don't have it broke down into just on its own like Farmhouse Ale, once they do here I'll consider getting it from time to time. Until then, it's unfortunately not worth getting the sampler for this alone as to need to have to disperse 1845 and Farmhouse. I feel that it is like tying your guests or yourself to a firing post.

330ml bottle. Some nonsense about a curse and the meaning of the '=' symbol (really?) grace the label, and the cap spouts this gem: Bock = Taste. Hmmmm...the etymological inferences make me just want to slam a beer...on that note...

This beer pours a clear, dark rusty brown colour, with two fingers of frothy pale beige head, which settles like it's got a hot date somewhere else, leaving a low rise of slinking lace around the glass. It smells of thin roasted nutty malt, a metallic mineral character, and earthy, weedy hops. The taste is moderately sweet toasted grain, a bit of oily nuttiness, some mild bittersweet chocolate, a soft edgy, drying alcohol, and a musty floral/weedy hoppiness. The carbonation is quite sedate, the body just on the south side of medium weight, and mostly smooth. It finishes off-dry, the nutty malt still representing, with a adequate nondescript drying counterpoint.

Well, there's a first time for everything, and that time for my relationship with Minhas brewing has arrived - I drank the whole damned bottle! Sis boom bah! Nobody put a gun to my head, it was actually the beer that did it for me (or, if you will, didn't dispel my notions otherwise). While still out of sight of the world beaters for the style, this is still easily drinkable, and the bastard stepchild, in a Disney feel-good movie kind of way, of this brewery. Give it some love - it might encourage them.

Appearance - Dark brown. Appears clear. Short tan head that quickly dissipates.

Smell - Moderate roasted malt aroma. Getting mostly brown sugar.

Taste - Very sweet roasted malts. Kind of a light caramel sugary flavor. A little watery. Not picking up any hops. One note and overly sweet.

Mouthfeel - Light and crisp. Seems out of character for style.

Overall - This might have been the best of the 6 pack (excepting the root beer) given to me after the brewery tour, but it's nothing to write home about. Minhas brews seem designed to be simple, light, and sweet. Not a winning combination for me.

Poured cold from a bottle to a glass

A - Dark color, not much light shown through. A finger of foam but reseeds rather quickly. Very little carbonation

S - A sweet dark carmel malts, couldn't notice much of any hop smell

T - Light bodied brew, pretty smooth going down

M/D - Overall I thought it was a pretty good brew, nice and light in my mouth and smooth going down, more than likely not your typical bock but it worked for Minhas, it's the second one of a sampler pack. I would buy this again if they decide to sell separately, for now not a good enough reason to buy the whole pack again. I did however like there Swiss Style Amber but until I try the last two brews it's not worth it to me in buying the pack.

Extremely dark brown in color and approaching black, or perhaps one might say mahogany. Light foam head that is a tannish-white color. Roasted malt nose that is barely detectable. There may be a touch of smoke and grains on the nose, but as I said it remains tantalizingly out of reach. Grainy attack that smoothes out into a creamy malt flavor. I find this beer sweet and enjoyable with a very light body and mouthfeel. The flavor enhances a mild creaminess in the texture. The finish is pretty clean and there is a mild grain aftertaste that is accompanied by some lingering notes of sweet malt. This beer is probably better than the numbers will bear out because the nose and appearance are just average.

Served in a Chicago Bears shaker pint glass.

Figured I'd give the Minhas bottles a try to see if they were any better than their sad canned counterparts. This one pours a clear ruby-brown, heavy on the ruby, topped by a half-finger of light ecru foam. The nose comprises sugar-free maple syrup (it smells differently to me...I've checked...), very light roasted malts, light cocoa, and a touch of honey. The taste leans toward a mixture of the honey and the syrup, though a definitive wave of toasted sourdough comes through toward the end. The body is a light-ish medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a decent bock, but plenty of room for improvement.

Appearance -- Pours a deep dark brown with cherry highlights. One finger of sudsy tan head. that quickly dissipates. For Minhas, this isn't bad.

Smell -- Prune, raisin, molasses, buttered corn.

Taste -- Raisin and prune, molasses, cocoa and coffee grounds. A little bit of off mineraly, creamed corn-like flavor elements that seem to be the hallmark of this brewery - the water? Overall, the taste is rather thin.

Mouthfeel -- Thin with moderate prickly carbonation.

Drinkability -- Wow, this is probably the best beer Minhas makes aside from maybe Huber Bock. That said, it still isn't a terribly good beer, especially considering that Wisconsin makes the best bock beers in the US. Keep trying, Minhas!

I took a tour of the Minhas Craft brewery in Monroe, WI in late Summer 2010. As a parting gift for taking the tour they gave away free bottles of beer and fighting billy bock was one of them.

This bock pours a dark brown with a normal head of foam. For being a bock this had a much lighter flavor than most bocks. It also didn't leave much of an after taste. Something new and different to try but probably not going to be anyone's regular purchase.

Pours a deep black color with a thin tan head and some lacing. Smells of vanilla, roasted malts, and booze. Not too bad of a smell altogether. Tastes of subtle roasted malts, some hops to mellow out the sweetness. A little smokiness gives this well blended bock some good character. Quite tasty. Mouthfeel is a little thin but is backed up with some carbonation. Drinkability is pretty good.

Poured into a pint glass. Bottle contains 11.16 oz. of beer.

Nice dark brown color. Head dissipates quickly. No lacing. I get raisins in the nose and caramel mixed with an off-putting well water flavor in the taste and finish. Carbonation low. Mouthfeel is watery/thin.

Picked this up on a lark while in Monroe. Part of a sampler pack. Won't be seeking it out in the future.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a shaker pint.

Pours a nice deep ruddy auburn. Nice sized cream colored head leaves moderate lacing. Decent clarity from what I can see, the beer is a bit dark to judge clarity.

Aroma is of sweet grain up front. Typical bock aroma of dextrose and dark fruit. Roasted candy sugar and slight vanilla aroma. Lager yeast is barely discernible. Aroma finishes brown sugar and molasses. No apparent hop aroma.

Flavor is of deeply roasted grain and dark fruity molasses. Brown sugar, dates and prune like flavor. Slight bitterness which is most likely the roast and not hop. Fruity yeast edge add a little depth, but overall flavor is pretty one dimensional.

Mouthfeel is thin and slightly watery. Not thin in a crisp way, but a watery way. Carbonation is lacking and the creaminess I expected given the nice head on the beer was not apparent.

Drinkability would be better if the mouthfeel was a little better.

Overall an average beer, nothing special. Better than other sub standard bocks (Shiner, etc.), that I have had before.

This beer poured out as a clear looking brown color with a light tan head on top. The head and retention on this beer were actually pretty impressive. There was even some lacing on this beer, I was surprised. The smell of the beer was decent, not too much in the way of hops, mostly just a malt aroma, kind of sweet smelling. The taste was pretty god I though, it was sweet but had a subtle chocolate flavor in there. It doesn't really fit the style too much but still I was impressed with the finish on this one at least. The mouthfeel is light, decently carbonated and easy to drink. Overall it's one of the better beers coming out of Minhas.

Little to no head in the pour maybe just a thin lace.
Color Dark brown around the edges and Black in the middle.
Smell was roasted malt light chocolate, sour mineral and sweet.
Taste little to none up front with a roasted chocolate after taste.
Carbonation was very light with a slight tingle.
Smooth light light body feel.

This beer was one out of a sampler pack from the Brewery tour.
Not the greatest beer, but not bad, has a lingering aftertaste.

P.S. Brewery tour is great

Poured into a pint glass.

A-Pours a tan head, fluffy and light, which sustained only ok, receding quickly to a splotchy layer. Beer was brown in color, appearing almost opaque, but allowing for some vision through it close up.

S-Chocolate and caramel. Some bready sweetness.

T-Choco-toffee quickly fades into a damp cardboard flavor. Hops is not present. Finishes blah. Not sweet enough for a bock.

M-Feels thin, damp and flabby. Carb is mediuum-level, lacking something.

D-Blah-ish brew.

/picked this up at the brewery, got a sampler 8 pack with 2 of this, a pils, lazy mutt, and swiss amber.

A- poured a dark brown with a red hue up to the light. light tan head on top, fell pretty quickly and didnt give any lacing. not too surprizing.

S- copper, amber and butterscotch flavors on top of a light malt.

T- light bock spiced maltiness. not too bad. smooth malty finish which slowly fades down to a lingering maltiness. slightly sweet at the start and balanced by the end.

M- medium body with strong carbonation.

D- pretty good, for how cheap it is, its pretty good. one of the better they have put out.
