24 oz can into a wine glass. Pinkies out.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden color. The head is a finger high and white in shade. Retention isn't very special, but hey it's 11%. Some specks of lacing are left on the glass. (3.75)

Smell: Huge, massive sugar notes are coming through. I'm also picking up some sherry oxidation, paired with some booziness. The alcohol comes through the more it opens up - ergo, drink it cold. It smells mediocre rather than hateful, I must say... (2.75)

Taste: Big sweetness comes out first, bringing notes of apple, caramel, and nuttiness. The finish is very boozy, natch. Holy crap, is it boozy. Not likable by any means. One good note about this malt likka are the restrained adjuncts - it tastes more like a bad strong ale than a bad malt likka. The shittiness of this beer sneaks up on me, rather than hitting me like a sack of bricks. (1.5)

Mouthfeel: Big, heavy, sweet, and massive. And ridiculously boozy, too. At least something like Steel Reserve can be willed down easily. This almost seems under-carbonated for a malt likka, too. Just a total chore to drink. (1.5)

Overall: Yep, it sucks ass. Which begs the question, why did I buy this beer? Total bile fascination, that's why. Well, I'm here to tell you guys: drink something else. SNPA, Guinness, Stella Artois, Steel Reserve, anything. I guarantee it will be better than this crap. Next! (1.5)

710ml "King Can" - what, "Monster Can" no longer works with the kiddies?

This beer pours a clear pale straw colour, with two fingers of almost creamy white head, which leaves a decent drooping paint job of lace around the glass as it sinks away. It smells strongly of sweet corn grist, and melted plastic fusel alcohol. The taste is gag-inducing - very, very sweet, sugary, mushed apple, with the obvious, and unholy smooth booze only adding to the saccharine wank-fest. Just for shits and giggles, I detect some skunky, musky 'hops' in there too. The carbonation is beaten down to the point of no longer caring, the body riddled with diabetes. It finishes still very sweet, with some unpleasant floral/perfume acrid booziness scratching at the door.

A very industrial (not 'industrious') tasting beer. Paint thinner with a week's worth of office kitchen sugar or sugar substitute dumped in. I'm only drinking a pawn's worth of this pants-less King's serving, and that's hard enough as it is. (994 characters)

Worst Malt Liqour i've ever tasted and i drink alot of malt liqours. Not very fizzy and the taste is reminiscent of pure failure. I keep re-trying to buy this and give it more chances and have only been able to finish it once. Not recommended. Better to pound 2 40 oz Colt 45's than this. (288 characters)

Minhas Craft Brewery "Axe Head Malt Liquor"
24 oz. "King Can", coded "13 194 21"
$1.59 @ Stop N Shop Liquor, Camden, NJ

Appearance: Deep golden in color bordering on orange in a full glass. Hazy. Very little bright white head subsides quickly. No lacing is left behind.

Smell: Surprisingly malty - I wonder if that's from oxidation. Some alcohol at 11.0% abv. Some fruity esters.

Taste: The alcohol is much more evident in the taste. Remains surprisingly malty... I'm guessing that maybe they're using less adjunct than the big boys do. Sweetish as well... almost a bit like unfermented wort. The expected yeasty fruitiness rounds it out with notes of grape, white raisins, and apple (maybe even grape jelly). Some phenols are present as well (clove?). Bitterness is kept to a minimum, and it's barely needed as the alcohol more than balances it, stepping over the edge and giving it a ragged burn at the end.

Mouthfeel: Delicately fizzy, dull carbonation. Medium-full bodied with a dextrinous edge. Alcohol is apparent as well. So... soft, but with a slap of sharpness and a little bite?

Overall: More interesting than many of the mainstream malt liquors out there, but not nearly as refined. Sloppily hot with alcohol, yet there's still some charm to it. (1,261 characters)

Novelty buy (aren't they all) for $1.38 at Trixie's in Madison. Apparently this is a hot seller there...

Pours into a Hamms goblet a pale anemic yellow, slow trails of carbonation rising up. Audibly fizzy head of white foam that fades after 30 seconds. There is some sparse lacing, but who cares, this is bonafide crunk juice.

Super sweet candy banana aroma when the can is opened, then the aroma takes a turn for the purple. Grape candy to be specific. So you have a grape-banana candy drink, that is Axe Head. Some dishrag notes of minerals and musty soggy grain, but the candy sweetness overpowers that.

Tastes like one too many nutrasweets dumped into a apple-grape juice box. Yuck is about all I can say. Thick and syrupy, coats the mouth and just about makes me gag. Once it numbs the palate it goes down easier, but that just doesn't sound right. Doesn't taste right either. Harshly astringent and gag-inducingly sweet. Way too much residual sugar. As it warms up the alcohol rears its ugly head, so drink as cold as possible, or just avoid it.

Simply put, this is gross, poorly made garbage to numb your brain with.
Wouldn't expect anything less from Minhas... (1,174 characters)

Clear pale yellow with a big fluffy white head that fades fast. The nose is comprised of dusky metallic grits, green apple and grain alcohol. The taste is much like the smell, sweet grits and appleskin mascerated in corn liquor. The alcohol is relatively well hidden for such a high ABV. This stuff is evil, for $1.09 and at 11% ABV, one single 40 oz could do serious damage (I guess that's the point). I chickened out after about 8 oz though. (443 characters)

24 ounce can:

Pours chill-hazed golden with a white head that descends to a lasting wispy island. Some lacing sticks.

Smells like typical, "cheap" malt liquor - corn, husk booze. The booze runs the show here. There is something reminiscent of standing near a gasoline pump. Unpleasant.

The taste is even worse. Very sweet. Cheap booze (rubbing alcohol and bandaids?), buttered corn and veggies. Fizzy, but not overly so for the style, allowing for some slickness.

Sweet, raw, and boozy, this is not enjoyable, and pretty tough to get through until about half-way through when the objective becomes to just finish it.

Warning: the side-effects of this could be as bad as the brew itself.

There are better, smoother, malt liquors out there. (745 characters)

710 ml (24 oz) King Can, bought only because a trading partner wanted the can. Similar label but a large 11%, and a red label with the price of $3.25 printed on the can. Extreme Beer, Extra Strong Beer (not Malt Beverage), Extremely Strong, Extremely Smooth. Imported by Mountain Crest Brewing Company, Calgary.
Clear dark yellow orange color, white foam that fades fast, doesn't last long enough to qualify as head. The smell is metallic and alcohol, no other discrenable aroma. The taste is the same as the smell, with some sweet vegetable residue. Average body and mouthfeel (I guess), couldn't finish one glass, let alone the whole can. It does carry a high ABV punch, which is what it's made for. I suppose that makes it fit the style for a malt liquor?! (759 characters)

When seeing "11%" and "Mountain Crest", I knew this was going to be painful.

Clear straw yellow appearance with little head that quickly disappears. Smell is very sweet with a combination of fruit and alcohol.

Taste is very sweet and syrupy, picked up fruit and a huge amount of booze. Taking a swig burns almost like whiskey. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Aftertaste has a lingering grape, booze taste.

Designed to get you drunk for cheap; but with the amount of sugar (big hangover potential) and poor quality taste, you can get better malt liquors for an extra $1. (576 characters)

Saw a 40 of this evil liquid for only $1.99, how could I pass it up?! I obviously didn't pour it into a glass but drank it out of the bottle out of a brown paper bag as is the custom. Tasted like shit and alcohol teamed up to punch your face every sip. At 11% this was expected I guess. Certainly got the job done, best bargain in the liquor store! (348 characters)

Oh, happy, happy, joy, joy - another Minhas Craft Brewery beer to advance The CANQuest (TM)'s cause! Their products, since I hesitate to call them "beers", have been some of the lowest of the low on this journey, which is closing in on # 400, by the way. I have held off long enough on this one. I have the day off and other than watching a hockey game on TV later tonight, nothing else is on the menu. Certainly not operating heavy machinery ...

From the CAN: "King [CAN]" - no s**t, Sherlock! 24 fluid ounces of evil with not one but two gleaming axe heads depicting the damage that is going to be done to my brain housing group.

The Crack & Glug reminded me of one of the real flaws in these Tallboy CANs - the opening sits well back from the lip and spilling CAN be a frequent CANcern. Fortunately, I have perfected my art. Holy Plastics Factory, Batman! The nose smelled like something totally unnatural and I had not even leaned in for a whiff. I am already developing a headache. I had two fingers' worth of rocky, bone-white head that fell faster than Wile E. Coyote going off a cliff. The nose was really fusel, like paint thinner accompanied by a Bazooka bubble gum-like sweetness. How do they accomplish this? Color was a really beautiful deep-golden yellow with NE-quality clarity. I feel like I should say at least one nice thing about this beer since I have a feeling as to where it is headed. Mouthfeel was medium with a lot of initial alcohol heat on the tongue, giving 'way to a green apple and pink bubble gum flavor. Oof. Finish was literally breathtaking. I felt like the air had been sucked out of my lungs. Brutal. I CANnot recommend this for even the hardcore types that swill this style in the alley behind my house. (1,743 characters)

I saw a sampler pack from the Minhas brewery at Westside today.
I figure the stuff in it was okay, so for balance, I also picked up a
super duper tallboy of Minhas Axe Head Malt Liquor.

A careful pour got me a couple fingers of stiff foam over a clear
honey colored brew. Carbonation is extremely active, the nose
is corn syrup and alcohol. The flavor is sweet bubble gum balanced
by a hard alcohol burn. It's true that you may encounter bubble gum
flavors in your finer Belgian ales, but in this case it's like working on
a giant wad of Bazooka while sipping Everclear. Mouthfeel is pretty
full, but it would have to be to get you to 11% alcohol by volume.
Otherwise it's also pretty crisp but it's probably due to the burn. Not
good unless you're looking for the middle way toward a bender. For
me, a drain pour. (817 characters)

Thanks for sharing, Bobby.

Pours yellow in color with a short lived white head. An impressively sweet aroma of corn and grains. Definitely quite a bit of booze on the nose as well. Impressive... The flavor is also intensely sweet, far too much for my liking. Boozy and appley, too. On the fuller side for a malt liquor with high carbonation. (342 characters)

This beer is like Four Loko on steroids. It should be avoided at all costs. It is very, very pungent with a chalky aftertaste. Each swig is like a punch in the face. It's semi-foamy, but it dissipates quickly upon drinking it. I didn't pour it into a glass, because I used it for a drinking game, but from seeing it in the can, it appeared to be a very light, transparent yellow color. It feels heavy on the palate. (415 characters)

I can't take credit for this, "tastes like cheap vodka, Belgian candy sugar and corn on the cob". Yup that's pretty much it.
Looks just like malt liquor should. Smell is quite horrendous.
One redeeming quality is the sugar flavor takes on a nice hint of caramel in some pulls that wasn't really all that bad, but it's surrounded by so much awfulness that I'm not sure it's worth it. So busy being offended by the taste that I can't remember what the feel was like.
Pretty much undrinkable - and I rarely pour out beer (too much Lutheran guilt, I guess), but this one made the grade.
Gee thanks T for this one. And we still get to work through another bottle. (658 characters)

Can shared by Bobby at Strong Ale 2011.

A: Translucent straw colored with a small white head. Not at all unattractive.

S: Big corn notes with apple and grain. Alcohol is brash and bruising, stinging my nostrils.

T: Sugary apple and corn with a lot of alcohol. Not as clean and crisp as Evil Eye Ice, for example. Alcohol is harsh in the grainy corn finish.

M: Upper light body with high carbonation.

Overall: This lacks the finesse of something like, say, Evil Eye Ice. (486 characters)

Dark yellow colored beer with a rapidly fading head.Aroma and taste are green apple and nuclear submarine fuel. This packs a potent punch. It reminds me of high school when you would drink two forties of malt liqour and look for anyone to fistfight.Still I can't say that this is horrible but my no means will I say it's good. (324 characters)

Reviewed from notes.

A. Pale straw yellow with a fizzy two finger head that dissolves to nothing in thirty seconds, no lacing left behind.

S. Heavy solvents. Almost turpentine-like aroma floating on top of a scent of partially rotten cooked corn.

T. A sugary mess of swamp-gassy fruit and corn grist. Horrible fusel alcohols blow the back of your head off. Not good. This one was definitely designed with the express purpose of getting people drunk for cheap and with no real consideration for anything else.

M. Kind of soda-like at first but the carbonation goes flat in record time for some unknown reason. Medium body, but the level of boozey hotness strips all the moisture out of my mouth. There's boozey, and than there's this monstrosity. (749 characters)

From the 24oz can (I also have a 40, but haven't cracked it yet)

I bottom opened it and poured into a Bud "Bow Tie glass" There appears to be no head at all, and it is a very deep amber color

This baby smelled like straight up booze. Bordering on rubbing alcohol

The taste is far above par for such a high abv ML. I truly mean that this is smooth. Compare it to the likes of 211 and you will be impressed.

It went down extremely smooth and produced an ample, but not over-the-top buzz.

Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to try a "craft malt liquor"

Now, I can't wait to crack open the 40oz!!! (611 characters)
