12oz can served in a pilsner glass.

L - clear yellow color with a white head that thinned to a ring.

S - grainy with light grassy hops in the background.

T - mostly sweet grainy taste with just a hint of bitterness towards the finish.

F - medium bodied with decent carbonation.

O - just another average AAL.

12oz can from a 6-pk. purchased at the Spokane Trader Joe's for $3.99. No freshness date. According to the can's label, this was brewed by "Simpler Times Brewing Co." that has apparently been around "since 1845." Hmm.

Poured a golden color just a tiny bit too dark to be characterized as "straw-colored," with a big, bubbly white head that took a while to drop, with lots of lace.

Fairly crude cereal grains scent, with a little hint of some floral hops.

This tastes similar to mass market lagers like PBR and Oly, and actually better than some others of the style. Mostly malty, with a very slight hop tone to remind you this is beer.

Slightly bigger body than is normal for the style, but not to an overwhelming degree. Mouthfeel is about average for the style, meaning it's adequate and nothing more.

I think I have found a new designated shit beer for the fridge in mi casa. Not a terribly interesting beer to taste, it's still tough to beat at it's price considering the awful beers I have tried at that price point.

Sweet. Way, way too sweet. Vegetal boiled corn and very coarse carbonation overwhelms any other flavor or aroma. I poured the first can into a pint glass. I should've tossed the rest, but I'm cheap and drank the last two from the can to try and blunt the experience. Halfway through my first can I started to gag a little after a pull. I know this sounds melodramatic, but it was just bad. My wife agreed. It took the two of us a week to get through the six pack.

Another 50 cent can purchase from Trader Joe's just for fun. I've had this before but don't really remember it. Poured from can into pint glass.

Appearance is straw color with a bit of gold. Big fluffy head with great lacing. Looks somewhat promising. I don't particularly smell anything at all. Hm.

Taste is better than Name Tag. It's a bit more full and flavorful. Rice and corn dominate the flavor. Nothing overly remarkable here.

Mouthfeel is good and goes down smooth.

Overall, for 50 cents you can't really complain. Between this and Name Tag, their other 50 cent/can offering, I'd easily go with this one. It's much better.

12oz can purchased at Trader Joe's in Portland, ME. Pours a yellow body with a half inch of short-lived off-white head. Smells very bready with just the slightest hint of cooked vegetable. Bready flavor with very little else going on, maybe some yeasty or DMS notes but only ever so slightly. Clean finish. On the lighter side of medium-bodied with ample carbonation. Wow. Middle of the road, sure. Simple enough. But refreshing and the pleasant bready flavor with little else competing with it sets this beer apart. I would definitely get this again. Really good.

Can into pint.
Grabbed a mix-n-match 6 pack of tickable cans from Trader Joe's...

Very clear dark yellowy golden body with a huge 3 finger beige head. Wait, make that two finger, no one... Well shit. A thin film of beige bubbles is all that's left. No lace.
Little notes of lemony citrus hops come through, but are barely noticed above the massive sweetness of cereal-like grains and notes of boiled sweet corn.
The flavor is very sweet... Way too sweet in fact. The finish is even sweet, and that's bad in a lager-- the crisp clean finish of a cheap lager is one of it's selling points for me, and this hath failed.

Body is syrupy and heavy feeling.

Overall-- no thanks. This is poor, even in terms of representing the style!

"Sweet" tasting breakfast cereal taste is something I just can't get past in this beer. It's like someone put a semi-sugary cereal into the beer somehow, and it has entirely taken over. Pale gold in appearance, thin white head. Minimal nose, with some light cooked corn. Finish is sweet and cereal-like.

Trader Joe's. Gold can.

Simpler Times looks pretty good. High level of carbonation, decent white head over clearish yellow beer. Not as transparent as BMC beers.

The smell is unremarkable. You can tell it's a beer, but it's pretty faint. Smells more malty than hoppy.

The flavor is disappointing. Metallic, mild malty sweetness, a touch of hop crispness but not enough. It's not horrible but it's not great. Too sweet for a lager, in my opinion. Lagers are meant to be session beers and this one would get old after 1 or 2.

Mouthfeel is OK because the high level of carbonation makes up for an otherwise uninteresting beer.

A - pours a translucent pale gold color. Not much head, appears to be fairly well carbonated.

S - cereal grains and malt on the nose. No hop character to be found here - almost sugary.

T - upfront not much taste at all, but kind of crisp and watery at the same time. The taste through the middle and back end opens up with malty sweetness and fruity flavors, but it's a cloying sweetness that I do not enjoy.

M - medium light bodied, crisp. Decent enough I suppose.

O - overall this would have been much better if that cloying sweetness could be cut down on. Or balanced with something, anything! But, then again, at $4 for a six pack, who am I to complain? When I'm broke, I will probably buy this again.

Medium gold color, slight haze, with delightful streams of carbonation bursting about. The head is 1/4 inch of white foam, holding decently before leaving behind some sudsy froth. Bready, cereal malt nose, with a keen fruitiness. Nothing too impressive, but doesn't smell bad either.

The taste is really quite sweet for this type of lager, almost cloying. It has the banana-like sweetness of a Hefe, but minus any spiciness or other flavors to give it balance. No real bitterness in the finish either, the sweet maltiness lingers on the tongue long after. This thing tastes hefty, almost a chore to drink. The body is slightly chewy, with the carbonation foaming up onto the palate.

This lager is not for me. If it were a bit more clean and crisp, and had some hop balance I might dig it, but this one is just a heavy, malty lager. I think some folks will definitely like it though. With the 6.2% ABV and only $2.99 for a 6-pack it's a good value, and if you're just looking to get drunk it will probably do. Don't have high expectations for it going in, and it might be worth a try.

Thanks to woodychandler for yet another canned beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has rich golden color with a 1.5 inch head. Smell is on the sweet side, some malts. Taste is different, some grapes, sweet, fairly refreshing. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

I had seen this at Trader Joe's and for some reason didn't buy it ($2.99 for a six pack) until today. Wow was I surprised. It's sold warm so you've gotta chill it but that's okay. Very good lager with a nice overall taste and no aftertaste to speak of. The 6.2% ABV is also an added plus. If you have a Trader Joe's in your area I would seriously consider getting this.

A - Light golden with a slightly amber hue -- looks more appetizing than a BMC brew.

S - Boozy, hoppy, and bitter. Not too offensive for its alcohol content.

T - Slightly bitter from hops, followed by a warm rush of alcohol.

M - Consistency is akin to syrup. Lightly carbonated. Full bodied for the price and style.

O - For $2.99 (on sale) per 6-pack at Trader Joe's, it's hard to go wrong if one is on a budget or wants to catch a quick buzz -- or both. Although I rarely frequent Trader Joe's, I'll pick up a sixer each time I visit.

Poured a 12oz can into my Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. The beer pours a highly fizzy gold with a big 3 inch head that quickly disappears into nothingness. No head retention regardless of the major nucleation point on the glass. The aroma is overwhelmingly sweet. Almost to the point where it reminds me of unfermented wort. Just a bit of grassiness but not much else. The flavor is the same with just malty sweetness in whats supposed to be a light, clean lager. Almost a vegetal undertone. Not very good. The mouthfeel i sweet finishing just south of dry. Overall, its meh for a cheap beer. I don't think I'll be buying another 6 pack.

12oz can, Sam Adams perfect pint, no clear freshness date.

The bone white froth is very pretty on top of a yellow a shade or two darker than you get from most AALs. Retention is also better than most.

Primarily the aroma is sweet graininess with possibly a touch of sugarcane. There may be some alcohol developing as it gets warm, but hey, this is bargain beer and the kind you drink very cold anyway.

And on we go with sweet grains. Assorted cereal grains are very pleasant and there's a firm but kind bitterness. This is all utterly simple. The sweetness is kind of corny and almost too much.

Somehow this isn't fizzy enough. It does most things better than the big boys of fizzy brewing, except out fizz them. Drink it fast to keep it refreshing.

The Simpler Times Pilsner is better and actually has some hops. I wanted to try the lager, and now I know. For the three bucks grab a six of the Pilsner.

A - This beer pours a little darker than expected. The color is a clear golden yellow. The snow white head quickly vanishes.

S - Smells like a lager. The aroma is corn with a definite sweetness.

T - A fuller flavor than I would have guessed. The taste is similar to the aroma, but the sweetness is the most noticeable. The 6.2% ABV alcohol comes through in the finish with a touch of hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied, leaving the tongue wet and sticky.

O - For $3.99 a six-pack, this is really impressive, and it may even edge out PBR as my favorite adjunct lager. If money were no object, it would be a while before I picked this up again. However, money is an object for me. I can find nothing offensive about this beer, and I find it better than many brews in this category. This could be great for camping, canoeing, or any occasion where a simple, cold can of beer is all that's required.

Poured from the can into a pint glass
Reviewed from notes

A – Pours a dark blonde with a one finger head that quickly disappears to nothing. Moderate carbonation. Leaves behind no lacing at all.

S – Corn grit and sweet cereal adjuncts and some musty notes

T – A tiny bit of alcohol and sweet malt upfront. The body has a corn-grit taste that borders on sickly-sweet as well as a musty bitterness – perhaps due to the hops. A cereal adjunct finish that would be tolerable if it stopped there, but instead transitions into a horrid stale-sugar corn aftertaste. Down the sink this one went half-way through.

M – Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Actually much better than most macros.

Another freebie at my grandparent’s cabin. I was up here a year ago, and this wasn’t here, so it can’t be that old. Nonetheless, it tasted like someone threw a can of corn, sugar and water in a can and let it fester in the pump house for a decade or so. One of the worst tasting beers I’ve ever experienced. Apparently Simpler Times means that no hops or decent malt were used in brewing this beer.
