Appearance - Medium yellow. Hazy. Tall, fizzy, somewhat persistent white head.

Smell - Moderately strong pale malt. I'm not sure if this beer claims to be all-malt, but this smells a little corny.

Taste - Quite sweet pale malt. Falls on the cloying side. Little evidence of hops.

Mouthfeel - Light and crisp.

Overall - If this is an all-malt, it's one of the least impressive I've tried. If it's a macro, it's okay for a macro, but a little oversweet for me to enjoy more than one in a sitting.

Found this at work after an event. Not sure where it came from but it looked interesting.

A: Poured into a pils glass. Very light straw color - almost champagne-like. 2 finger, white, fine bubble, almost creamy head. Retained a thin head throughout and left reasonable lacing on the glass.

S: Definitely got some lemony fruit esters and some diacetyl coming through the grainy malt. No substantial hop presence in the nose.

T: Crisp but slightly cloying rather than the bitterness I was looking for. Almost wheat-like, fruity flavor with diacetyl. Not getting the noble hop type experience I was expecting. Dry finish that is grainy, not hoppy enough and a little metalic.

M: Light bodies and medium carbonation that feels pretty good in the mouth - not too aggressive.

D: Too much diacetyl for the style. Expected more biscuity malt and hop. It just didn't deliver. I was hoping I had found at interesting lager but it turned out to be a poor American adjunct type experience. Won't be returning to this one.

Poured into a chilled glass from the bottle:

Got this in a pick-a-six, glad I didn't buy a case of it....

Looks nice, good amber color but with very little head. Smells and tastes like a flat beer + sugar....way too sweet. It doesn't sit heavy at least, but the overpowering sweetness would prevent me from having another....

Overall, skip it for something better at the price point.

Pours an effervescent straw color with 3+ fingers of pearl colored head. Zero head retention & average lacing

S: Cereal notes, metallic & soapy hops

T: Bready, grassyness & a bit of dryness up front, plus some cloying cooked cereal sweetness. More sweetness & cereal as this warms, some lemony & soapy hops. Finishes cloying sweet with vegtal mediocrity

MF: Light/,medium bodied with low carbonation, skews too sweet

Drinks slow, just too damn sweet. This brewery isn't impressing me so fat, glad I just bought a single

Semi cloudy looking in a glass.

Smells like a sweet, cheap beer.

The taste is reminiscent of a cheap malt liquor being way too sweet and no hoppiness whatsoever. Taste more like wort.

Mouthfeel isn't too bad if you plug your nose like you would as a kid trying to choke down cod liver oil. Even the feel is sickening sweet.

Overall this is a really bad beer and the fact that is available as a pick 6 along with beers from Bell's is ridiculous. 3 of 3 Berghoff beers have been duds for me. never again..

12 oz bottle poured into an American Tumbler. No date or info.

A - Brilliantly clear and pale yellow straw with a soda-like effervescence. So many bubbles! A thin white head popped up and disappeared to a layer and ring quickly.

S - The nose has an aroma of sweet and grainy malts with corn and little in the way of hops. One-dimensional and boring.

T - The flavor is really husky and grainy with a dry straw texture and finish. A bit of sweet malt is splashed in there with a kiss of hops towards the end but it's a really plain lager.

M - Crisp and light-bodied with a harsh carbonation bite to the finish. Dry...very dry at the end.

D - Beer like this has it's place...but not in my fridge. Really disappointing as it is basically an adjunct lager with a harsh level of carbonation to distract from the flavor. Wont ever be having this one again.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. ABV? No one seems to know, apparently. It isn't listed on Beer Advocate, and it isn't listed on the bottle. I have had this beer before in the Berghoff sampler pack and was unimpressed, but against my better judgement I decided to give it another go.

A - Semi-aggressive pour yields a dull flat cloudy lemon colored beer with virtually no head on top. Some bubbles rushing up the sides to the top.

S - Dull, chemically treated malts and other dusty chemical adjuncts. Smells pretty unappealing, even for a lager which is usually a pretty lame smelling brew. Definitely has some kind of artificial sweetness to it.

T - Dusty, chemically treated malts and corn husk flavor. Very overly carbonated body just leaves you feeling bloated. I'm not sure if I would choose this beer or some mass-marketed trill lagers like Miller Lite or Coors Light, if I had the choice. To be honest, I think I might enjoy the taste of a Coors Light with a lime squeezed into it, better than this beer. Carbonated, basically flavorless, and artificially too sweet. Almost has some kind of a cherry cough syrup / medicine taste to it.

M - Carbonated. Crackles on your tongue like pop rocks after you've sipped it down. I can't wait to wash down the sickeningly sweet artificial taste of this beer with something better.

Overall, a beer to try once and never again. I have had four different Berghoff beers now by Minhas brewery and they were all terrible. I guess I only bought this again so that I could review it here on Beer Advocate, and I will assuredly never buy this beer again. Avoid.

Acquired via trade from MilwaukeeCrusher, so a big “Thank You” goes out to him. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a thin white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains light caramelized malts, grain, some lager yeast and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste is bready up front with flavors of grain, lager yeast and a thin malt character. Then some mild malt sweetness comes in along with a very mild hops presence, but there isn’t a lot of balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Not very tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, there are certainly other beers in the style that I would choose first.

Poured into a Pilsener glass, which is maybe to take this beer a bit too seriously.

A- Pours a clear, pale golden color. Loads of carbonation. A rough pour produces a thin half-finger of thin white head, which quickly becomes literally nothing, no head at all.

S- Grain, sweet pale malts, not much hop character is detectable. Smells very clean.

T- More grains, corn husk, hop bitterness is decent and manages to desperately cling into the finish. Pale malts and adjuncts are relatively sweet. Dry finish with more adjuncts and grains.

M- Light bodied, full carbonation, finishes clean and bone dry, leaves very little on the palate at all.

O- This really isn't a terrible beer, it would go well with food, I also used it to cook some brats and it did a good job, its a good option if you're looking for a cheap session beer or just something to refresh you or cool you down in the summer.

12oz. bottle poured into an imperial pint. No bottled date. Thanks to BeerFMAndy for the trade.

(A)- Pours a clear straw yellow color that produced a quickly to immediate dissipating bubbly white head.

(S)- Very floral dryness with lemon & apricot. Honey-like sweetness.

(T)- Very very grassy lemon & bubblegum fruitiness. This is bizarre. Its like honey nut cheerios & fruit loops put together plus a grassy lemon thing. Really sugary sweet.

(M)- Good carbonation level. A very disjointed beer though. Very sugary sweet with conflicting hoppy & malty flavors.

(D)- I am not a fan. Its a little too weird for me. Funky, but in a bad way. You might as well eat a spoonful of sugar.

Very pale beer that seems to be somewhere between PBR and Heineken to me.

It has a grainy smell with a bit of skunk, and the light adjunct/corn sweetness that I find not unpleasant. Feels gently fizzy and refreshing in my mouth, with good drinkability in spite of the bitter/skunk aftertaste.

This would be a good macro, but it unfortunately is not quite at a macro pricepoint (in spite of the lower cost of these Berghoff offereings). Probably the beer I most trust in their variety pack, and that doesn't say a lot.

Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Part four of my six-part Berghoff sampling. By this point, the movie's almost over (He's Just Not That Into You, if you must know), and I'm not sure what's going on in my glass anymore. This continuation pours a clear sallow-leaning pale straw topped by a finger of white foam. The nose comprises sand, dirt, flowers, and a touch of rice and wheat. No. The taste isn't all that much of an improvement, though an increase in the wheat character helps bring this thing closer to enjoyment (though there's quite a way to go yet, lemme tell ya). The body is pretty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a crisp finish. Overall, this is just one bad-tasting pils, no other way to put it.

12 oz brown longneck poured into my SA glass. The beer is a bright gold with a slight chill haze. Fluffy white head but not much lacing.

The nose is of cereal, malt and some floral hops. Not bad at all.

After the looks and the smell, the taste is a bit of a letdown. Some watery grains, a bit of apple and some bitterness on the backend. There is a bit of bubblegum in the taste which is distracting. Still the beer borders on decent a bit more hops and a smidgen more malt, it would be good.

Decent carbonation and a firm mouth can't really overcome the flaws in the taste. Perhaps an off bottle, but given this breweries latest offerings, I doubt it.

By far one of the worst lagers I've ever had. I can taste the alcohol and there's not even much in it. The color is pukey yellow, darker than most adjuncts but somehow quite disgusting. The head is not important, since it only furthers the terrible aroma. Figured I'd give this beer a shot because it was a decent value and they are a regional brewer, but could only drink one out of a six pack. Not palatable.

A tough beer to research. The Minhas website has no information on the beer and the bottle has very limited data. I suspect this beer may be name change or a slight recipe change from the Berghoff Original.

The beer begins with a standard Pilsner appearance that demonstrates a firm straw color, ample carbonation, but slight on head formation and retention with a loosely knit foamstand and nearly fizzy demeanor.

Aromas of pilsner malts dominate the beer while whiffs of German (Hallertau?) hops come and go. Some grain flavors and fresh barley sweetness also give way to the olfactories. As the hops subside, the grains also give some modest vegital and ashy sulfer aromas but they are light.

Flavors of pilsner malt and sweetness merge with grain flavors. At times this makes the beer taste a little vegital and worty but ultimately the malt-grain profile garner attention above sulfer flavors. Hop flavor is light and take on an herbal proportion to round out the sweetness. Finishes a bit sweet.

Crisp and refreshing in the mouthfeel although a bit scrubbing because of the carbonation bite and a bit of oversparged astringency. This makes the grain profile a bit rough. A light hop bitterness outlasts the sweetness just inside the finish. No real lingering of flavor, bitter, sweet, or otherwise.

Ultimately an ok beer, but cannot compare favorably with classic German Warsteiners or Spatens. If anyone finds more information on this beer, then please share.

A - Poured out a clear, golden yellow color with a small, white head of bubbly foam. It left little to no lacing.

S - It smelled of caramel and grains. A very, very subtle floral hop aroma.

T - It tasted of some sweet caramel and grains. Not much hop character or bitterness.

M - It was fairly crisp and sharp. A light bodied beer.

D - This is an okay pilsener. I wouldn't rush out to buy more.

The beer, Prairie Lager from the Berghoff Brewery brewed at Minhas, under the direction of Berghoff owners, is a lager typical of German Helles. The character of this beer does not match that of a German Pilsner.
Appearance: Good hop note; foam was well developed with no fish eyes. The color, straw blond, was as expected of a hellos.
Smell: There were no off notes. A light hop note melded well with the malty characteristics expected of a hellos.
Taste: A smooth drink and refreshing effervescence brought out the mild hopping and malt additions.
Mouthfeel: A well balanced hellos lager with no lingering astringency.
Would purchase this beer again for my sheepshead team which gave a thumbs up for the beer.

Beer poured from bottle into a Mug shaped glass

A - Beer poured with a one-to-two finger white colored rocky foam; crisp golden brown colored body; good amount of carbonation stemmed from the bottom of the glass; no lacing at all

S - Slightly sour yeast notes; lager airiness; young fruit scents, almost like a wine; clean and crisp

T - Malt notes complimented by dark fruit flavors; rinse notes and touch of grains; sour scents from yeast

M - Filling beer; frothy feel with a subtle amount of body; slightly bubbly; went down smooth not to many flavors and can't feel the combination of flavors; not much of a Pilsener bitterness to it

D - Good flavor; good lager with a nice finish
