Pours a deep brown with tan head. Smells lightly of roasted malts, bit of cocoa. Tastes a bit bitter forward, roasted malts (weak) and the barest hint of unsweetened cocoa. Mouthfeel with strong carbonation, very thin for a stout, fairly clean finish.

For the price point, not bad - could use a lot of improvement - I doubt I would purchase again despite the price

Dark brown almost black with a rawhide colored head.
Has a bitter bite on first taste that gives way to a smooth chocolate/ coffee flavor.
Served in a pint glass.
Not bad.

Maybe with age this would be good but very thin and heavy carbonation almost like a chocolate soda

look: 3.5 | smell: 2.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.25

Served in a pint glass.

Appearance: Thin black liquid with medium to heavy bubbles on the body. Head is your average tan maybe rising to about one third of an inch .

Smell: Light scent, with notes of mocha but wish there was more to it. Smells more of malt and hops than cocoa.

Taste: Heavy malted for most stouts, light cocoa taste but lacks

Mouth: Not as sticky s I would hope, more bitter towards the direction of a lager with a touch of chocolate.

Overall: Ehh it's okay...has much room for improvement. Not bad but not great either. Nice dinner beer as opposed to the dessert that i would normally crave. Salud!

Nice head on the beer. Taste more roast than chocolate. Much better beer than expected from the ratings.

Picked this up at Trader Joes for 2.49 in a 650ml bottle. Pours a very dark black with a nice creamy head. Faint smell of chocolate and roasted coffee. Tastes pretty good, picking up notes of chocolate and coffee. Thin mouthfeel. Not the best chocolate stout, but for 2.49 i'm not disappointed,

This beer poured nicely, a nice deep brown with a two finger root beer head that broke leaving fair lacing. From there things go a little sideways. The smell is very muted. Some chocolate, but faint. Roasts are also faint. There isn't much else going on. The taste is bitter and ashy. No chocolate came through on my palate. Very fizzy, yet a thin feel.

I paid $2.50 for a bomber of this at Trader Joe's. I figured it was a great deal. Now I realize I overpaid.

Bought at Trader Joe's with a couple other Boatswain bombers. At 2.29 a piece I thought I'd found a steal, now I'm not so sure. Bomber gets split between a traditional pub pint and a snifter. Two fingers of fizzy, active mocha head that quickly folds back into the brew. Some sticky lacing. Tons of carbonation, a ridiculous amount, looks like pop rather than beer.

Smells like booze, some bitter chocolate, Nestle Quik powder mix, and a twinge of regret. Stouts are some of my favorites, so I tend to give them a little more benefit of the doubt. Not this one, not right now.

Mouthfeel is thin, watery. There's a taste of bitter coffee and booze, and not much else. I wanna like it, for 2.29 I really wanna like it. But it's not happening.

It's not offensive, it's just bleh. And that's a terrible thing for a stout to be. This is a stout for people who want to drink something brown, drink a lot of it, and drink it quick. I can't fault it too much because, y'know, 2.29. For a bomber.

Long story short: Inoffensive and cheap stout-like beverage.

Not bad at all for the pricepoint. 2.29 a bomber. Mine was brewed by Rhinelander. The coffee was very prominent with a very smooth roasty bitterness behind it. I actually enjoyed this.

Deep chocolate brown with decent head and ok lacing. Smell is of a bit of chocolate. Taste has a touch of chocolate but the malt presence is way too high and renders this beer to the bottom of its style....

Not bad. Would happily drink anytime. Good enough value for me to not regret buying a bomber (Trader Joe's, $2.29), despite it being a watery/carbonated stout rather than a creamy/dense one like I usually prefer. There seems to be some debate here about how chocolatey it is. I found it to be delightfully less chocolatey than the overt claims on the label might imply.

Pours a nice two finger mocha colored head, body is pitch black. Head retention was above average, started dying halfway through, lacing was average.

Smell is of bakers chocolate, chocolate malt powder, and sweet caramel malt. Hops and alcohol aren't present.

Taste is of chocolate malt, slight cocoa powder also. Sweetness was cut by a hint of burnt metallic coffee. Hops were muted and alcohol was very light.

Mouthfeel was good for a light stout. Wish head contributed more to the body. Theres a slight chalky aftertaste.

Overall this was a decent representation of the style but nothing outstanding. There was something that tasted off but i couldn't pinpoint that thing. Glad I tried it but its far from the best in a crowded market.

For $2.29 at Trader Joe's, it's a must try...Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.

Looks good..But taste and aroma are quite lacking. And without a payoff kick, it's not so stout.

Boatswain Chocolate Stout
22 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "15 339 15"
$2.49 @ Trader Joe's #766, Tampa, FL

Although this beer appears to be contract brewed at the mighty Minhas Brewery, the label reads "BREWED & BOTTLED BY: RHINELANDER BREWING CO., LLC. MONROE WI 53566". I've contacted Rhinelander about the illegality of this labeling but have not heard back.

Notes: Distinctly chocolatey with a decisive bittersweet dark chocolate character. Some fruit and roasted character appears as well, both in the aroma and the flavor. The grassy and leafy hops, as might be expected for the style, are relegated to a background role. Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation level that leaves it with a delicate caress before smoothly passing. Balanced. Pleasant but still somehow lacking.

wow! very nice. very chocolate-y. very under-rated, I think... i'm not afraid to call it what it is- a Trader Joe's Special! okay..... but it's pretty darned good. low abv, but that transfers to taste (hopefully). I do not understand the "75" rating.... maybe because it IS Trader Joe's stuff... but this is pretty good, in my opinion, on a neutral evening, and with un-biased taste buds...

I tasted quite a bit more chocolate than many of the reviewers here, but generally concur that it falls short of what a chocolate stout can be. For the price, not bad at all, but quite a few other comparably-priced Trader Joe's offerings surpass it.

Not enough chocolate, not enough black patent malt. But not bad by any stretch.

Bought from Trader Joe's in Raleigh, NC. supposed to be chocolate stout but minimal chocolate flavor. Not very good. Won;t be trying again.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. Another contract-brewed Trader Joe's offering.

Appearance: dark brown with lots of haze. Head pours a finger of creamy tan foam with great retention and a nice lace. A great looking beer, really.

Smell: subtle aroma of lightly sweet malt with some roasty qualities. Chocolate is minimal, but can sort of be distinguished.

Taste: lightly roasty malt flavor, with a little sour astringency. Rather homebrew-ey in its flavor, the chocolate is low-key but raw in nature. Not the satisfyingly silky treat that a chocolate stout should be. That said, it's mostly inoffensive.

Mouthfeel: medium body with an OK carbonation and a raspy creaminess. Not too bad, I guess.

Overall: it is unfortunate, but this doesn't seem like a super high quality beer. It's not horrible or anything, but a chocolate stout can be so much more than this.

Nice dark chocolate color with tan head
Milk chocolate smell
Taste is heavily chocolate with a touch of hops at the end
Mouthfeel is smooth with definite carbonation feel
Overall a good brew for the cost. A good session beer.

Appearance- pours a deep dark brown, nearly opaque black, with a tan frothy expresso like head, two fingered in height.

Smell-not surprised but chocolate! Lots of it, hint of bitterness aroma from the hopes.

Taste/mouthful- nice and smooth great body lives up to the stout style, almost creamy in texture, bitter sweet chocolate malt, hopped perfectly, just a hint of tanginess from the hops but sits back to let the chocolate take the fore front of the flavor. For 2.99 I was a sceptic, you could charge way more. Must try, would par Nicely with any desert.

Poured from a pint bottle into a pint glass. Pours a medium to dark brown with three fingers of a foamy khaki head. Smells of malt, hints of metal, and a corny lager smell overall not too appealing on the nose. It tastes of malt, hints of roast or smokiness, with a strong chocolate finishing taste, medium carbonation. Medium bodied with a crispy carbonation feel. Overall it's nothing exceptional and the best thing it has going for it is it's appearance

Poured into my frozen beer mug. The one thing this brew has going for it is the appearance - rich creamy brown foam with small to medium lacing. So dark when I held it up to the afternoon sun you STILL can't see through it. However, this one proves the saying 'you get what you pay for'. Yes, it is definitely a stout. It just lacks depth and has a certain watery body to it. Couldn't taste any chocolate, personally. A bit of creaminess with a slightly hoppy aftertaste. It's drinkable, but I won't be looking out for this one next time I'm in the store.

look: 3.75 | smell: 3 | taste: 2.75 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Guinness glass.

Appearance: Opaque black, modest light brown head.

Smell: The bottle smells kind of like an oatmeal stout with some cocoa. The glass seems to bring out some citrusy hops, as well. Bittersweet malt underneath. Smells like it's got more of a "brown" than "black" flavor profile.

Taste: The hints of cocoa powder are in there. The body of the beer is fairly weak -- keeps with the "brown" rather than "black" profile, kinda like a traditional porter. Underwhelming and kinda boring. A bit of hop acid around the edges.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full. Standard carb. Sugary.

Overall: Nothing special. Much cheaper than a chocolate stout from Rogue, but not nearly as enjoyable.
