Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Guinness glass.

Appearance: Opaque black, modest light brown head.

Smell: The bottle smells kind of like an oatmeal stout with some cocoa. The glass seems to bring out some citrusy hops, as well. Bittersweet malt underneath. Smells like it's got more of a "brown" than "black" flavor profile.

Taste: The hints of cocoa powder are in there. The body of the beer is fairly weak -- keeps with the "brown" rather than "black" profile, kinda like a traditional porter. Underwhelming and kinda boring. A bit of hop acid around the edges.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full. Standard carb. Sugary.

Overall: Nothing special. Much cheaper than a chocolate stout from Rogue, but not nearly as enjoyable. (721 characters)

22 oz bottle, no apparent dating, poured in a tulip glass.

A - Dark black with brown highlights, a one finger tan head that moves to a thin lace.

S - Chocolate nibs (yep, said nibs), some dark fruit, coffee/nut notes, cocoa.

T - Some chocolate, cocoa, almond, and some unsettling smoke/ash on the finish, which ends up dominating the taste

M - Thin in the beginning, and it maintains its thinness as it warms. The carbonation level is moderate, trending to low.

O - Gave it a chance, but it wasn't happening. The chocolate fades fast, and you are left with smoke/ash. (573 characters)

1pint bottle

A- Black, no light comeing thru this one. 2 finger high head that is light coco in color, very creamy in appearance. Nice lacing up the sides as the head falls, there is visable lacing on the inside of the bottle, nice.

S- Malty, cocoa, bready, some slight sweetness from the bottle, more sweet coming from the glass.

T- Slightly sweet up front, then gets kinda...bland. Having a hard time tasting the malts and cocoa that is present from the bottle, slight metallic aftertaste.

M- Not quite medium, a soft slick feeling, its ok.

O- Looks good, smells decent from the bottle, not a fan of the flavor as it gets bunched up into nothing, was really hard for me to pick out the flavors that I smelled. Glad I did not pay much for this one, wont be getting it again. (780 characters)

A - Dark smoky color. Bit high on the froth, which comes out to a chocolate cream color.

S - Light smell, kind of bland. Can't really smell the sharp chocolate flavor.

T - No distinct flavor. No spices or chocolate taste.

M - Goes down smooth, and has a slight flavor that lingers.

O - Nothing that stands out. Light flavor and light feel. (343 characters)

Boatswain Chocolate Stout has a thick, soapy, beige head, a very dark-brown (essentially, black) appearance, some stray, ascending bubbles appearing on the sides of the glass, and a thin lacing sheen. The aroma is of sweet, malty, dark bread, char, a touch of chocolate, and some cream. Taste is of those elements, with a mellow bitterness. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, and Boatswain Chocolate Stout finishes semi-wet and easy drinking.

Trader Joe's Boatswain Chocolate Stout, brewed with cocoa powder. 5.4% ABV.

A: Light brown head. Utterly black, with very dark brown in the dimple, and the slightest golden brown glow underneath

S: Very dark powdered cocoa, bordering on coffee. Toasted almond? Not sure on that one.

T/MF: Very dark chocolate, with a hint of coffee.

Nothing special. Solid enough, though. Especially given the price.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass. (461 characters)

A: poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass, dark purple brown with a large tan head that dissipates leaving some lacing, clear

S: malty, chocolate, cocoa, bready, dark toasty malt

T: bitter up front, slight hints of cocoa in the middle, sweetens only slightly, finish is light one dimensional hop bitterness, malt profile lacks depth

M: slightly slick

O: decent cheap brew from Trader Joe's (399 characters)

Poured from a 650 mL bottle into a snifter. Super dark brown bordering on black color with a golden medium brown finger of head. Head dissipated after a few moments. Little to no lacing occurred.

Rather pleasant nose with a predominately cocoa aroma with a hint of spice.

Decent mouth-feel with taste dominated by sweet chocolate notes, though some vanilla, cream soda, and coffee came through.

Overall a decent chocolate stout, definitely not horrible, with some great characteristics, though not a comprehensive package. Certainly unique and appreciable for it's good appearance and vibrant chocolate taste, but still quite a distance from perfection. (658 characters)

From the 750 ml. bottle obtained from a Trader Joe's. Sampled on March 11, 2014.

The pour is very nice and dark brown to about black with a modest long lasting tan head. It looks the way a stout should.

They boast that it is brewed with cocoa powder as opposed to just cocoa and that is mainly what I get at first along with some dark malts and a slight buttery sensation. Low hop note.

The body is a little under medium.

I am picking up some chocolate malts and a slightly bitter hop bitterness at the end. But the beer really feels like someone sprinkled some Nestle cocoa mix into the beer. That cocoa powder they boast about on the label tends to become its downfall. (676 characters)

Purchased from Trader Joes in Carmel Mountain, CA. Pours a dark black with a whiteish coffee colored head that faded quickly. Smell is of chocolate, malts, and kind of an earthy dry malty backbone to round out the nose. First sip, very malty, choclatey, smooth mouthfeel, pretty thin for a stout, but overall pleasant. Some coffee coming through a bit more as it warms up to room temp, balances out nicely with the malts and chocolate. Overall a pretty decent stout, I like that its not too heavy but still has some nice flavors coming through. (544 characters)

A: Pours black with a mocha head.

S: Vanilla, chocolate and dark roast coffee in the nose. Smells delicious.

T: Begins with tropical fruit, peach and orange, followed by medium and dark roast coffee and dark chocolate.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Definitely recommended if you like a good chocolate stout. Well worth a try. (331 characters)

Bottle from Santa
Pours a solid black with a smallish tan head.Aromas heavy on the roast and coffee and light on the chocolate as advertised. Bits of caramel and dark fruit round out the nose. The flavor is a slightly sweet roasty coffee malt beverage. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet roasty mouthfeel. Decent beer, but a bit one dimensional and not nearly enough chocolate of malty sweetness to make me think of chocolate. (452 characters)

Seven words or less: Solid value beer, chocolate coffee not bad

A: Solid black with a one finger head.

S: Chocolate and coffee.

T: I get a little chocolate, a little coffee, and a little bitterness at the end.

M: Pleasurable, semi-creamy.

O: This is a good beer, but great value for the price. $1.99 at Trader Joe's in Columbus, Ohio. Totally worth it! (357 characters)

Pours a dark brown to black color with a very thick foamy 3 finger tan head that faded very slowly and left very good foamy lacing and a layer on top. Smells of cocoa powder, grains, oatmeal, caramel, vanilla and peat moss; very nice chocolate nose that smells rich. The flavor is a drop off from the nose as it's a muted version with cocoa powder, grains, oatmeal, caramel, vanilla, herbs, floral hops and peat moss; still pretty good, but very thin for a stout. Mouthfeel is very light and watery with basically no carbonation and a slightly bitter and dry cocoa powder finish. Overall it was decent, above average, but lacked any real flavor excitement. (656 characters)

Boatswain Chocolate stout pours a black color with a nice large tan head. There is a strong hoppy aroma with good hints of chocolate, but with a metallic note. The taste has a nice strong chocolate flavor, weak beer flavors. A bit watery, but not overly sweet. Overall it has a nice good chocolate flavors. (306 characters)

Poured into a Reuben's Brew snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing opaque black in the glass. Thin brown head and thick ring around the glass with light lacing. Aroma of sweet toasted malt and light chocolate, pretty nice. Flavor is toasted malt with slight char, coffee and light chocolate with a bitter, somewhat astringent finish. Light to medium bodied. Delivers well what it promises; a cheap, decently made chocolate stout. All the flavor notes are there, but a bit thin on body and sharp and undifferentiated bitterness in the finish. A decent inexpensive light stout. (580 characters)

A: Very dark brown, almost black (just a hint of deep mahogany at the edges). Head was 1 finger of light brown, but it faded fairly quickly and left little lacing.

S: A mixture of aromas, appearing one after the other: Burnt sugar, muscato grapes, coffee, and faint cocoa notes.

T: Initially a strong mixture of sweet malt and acidic coffee; grape jam joins them shortly. Tangy, fruity flavors dominate for a moment, then fade to leave bitter coffee mixing with bitter chocolate, with just a hint of hops tang lingering.

M: Carbonation is fair, but the overall feel is a bit thin for a stout. Just the slightest bit of dryness in the finish.

O: Smell and taste are a mixture of coffee (more than chocolate) stout and imperial stout, although the mouth-feel is more like a medium porter. Good on its own account, and excellent for the price point. (850 characters)

Poured a 650ml bottle of this into my 1L stein.

A: Pours a almost opaque dark brown-black color with a short beige head with minimal lacing.

S: Smells of barley, malts, dark sugars, hints of coffee and chocolate

T: Was really expecting more chocolate flavor, barley predominates, hints of coffee and chocolate at best.

M: Full bodied beer with medium amounts of carbonation, bit lacking on flavor

O: Overall it's alright, bit lacking in most aspects but still it wasn't bad. Could drink quite a few of these but I would keep my socks on. I'd recommend though, well, well worth the price, I only paid $2 for it from trader joes, same amount for a stinky coke from a vending machine. (689 characters)

S: Doesn't smell of anything. maybe because i cooled the beer too much

T: hoppy bitterness. chocolate, but closer to burned Cocoa, coffee tone. Malty. pleasant sweet after taste

M:very smooth to taste. Not bad mouth feel

Overall: not bad, but i wish there were more richness like European stouts. I would drink this over Iguanita's cappucino stout any day. (359 characters)

I was not expecting much of this Trader Joes beer. Boatswain is a nice balanced stout . Roasted and chocolate malt is there and not too strong. Creamy brown head with a sweet chocolate smell.
I enjoyed drinking the Boatswain beer and will buy it again. If you're looking for a knock you down malt or a hoppy beer, look else where. Boatswain surprised me as an excellent drinking stout beer at a excellent price point. (418 characters)

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Almost black color with a finger and a half worth of lingering tan head. Fair amount of lacing.

Smell- Faint aroma of dark roasted malt and chocolate.

Taste- Dark roasted malt flavor with dark chocolate notes and a cocoa aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- On the heavy side of medium bodied and smooth with an average amount of carbonation.

Overall- This is not a mind blowing stout but it is a good one especially for the price ($2.50 a bottle). (488 characters)

Appearance: Very dark brown, almost black; huge, frothy light brown head

Aroma: Roasted grains; coffee; slight chocolate

Taste: Light chocolate on start with quick turn to roasted grains; smoky profile in the mid; thin throughout; finishes slightly bitter and semi-sweet; interesting, but not impressive

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores (378 characters)

Trader Joe's purchase poured from 650 mL (22 oz.) bottle to an imperial pint.

A: Color of fresh motor oil, nearly opaque. Thick, foamy cocoa-colored head.

S: Roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, slight molasses.

T: Roasted malt, instant coffee, plum, milk chocolate, grassy hops.

M: Medium bodied with a decently bitter hops finish and a tangible drying of the palate.

O: Overall a decent chocolate stout, but not quite what you would expect in the bomber packaging and for the price, even at Trader Joe's. Brewed with "cocoa powder," and the taste beckons a less than stellar ingredient quality. Nevertheless, nothing is below average about this brew. (650 characters)

22 oz bomber poured into a tulip

A- Pours surprisingly black. A small off brown colored head with little retention.

S- Big chocolate, roasted malt and coffee. A bit of caramel and on the sweet side. A roasted coffee forward flavor. A nice smelling brew.

T- A bitter sweetness up front. A roasted malt takes over and a nice addition of coffee as well. The cocoa isnt very sharp in this beer but does provide a solid base to the beer and adds a lot to the brew overall. Its fairly bitter/sweet and is fairly well balanced.

M- A bit light on feel. A sweeter beer. I think there may be lactose sugar.

O- Don't expect a lot from this beer but I got a bottle for $2.50 which is unbeatable. (689 characters)

22 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours very dark brown with about a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like roasted/grainy malt, bittersweet and milk chocolate, along with a bit of coffee. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but the dominant flavor is roasted/grainy malt, with some cocoa powder/bittersweet chocolate noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a bit slick with moderate carbonation. Not a bad overall beer. Can't complain much when it's $1.99 a bomber (from Trader Joe's of course). Worth a try at that price. (610 characters)
