Deep chocolate brown with decent head and ok lacing. Smell is of a bit of chocolate. Taste has a touch of chocolate but the malt presence is way too high and renders this beer to the bottom of its style.... (206 characters)

Not bad. Would happily drink anytime. Good enough value for me to not regret buying a bomber (Trader Joe's, $2.29), despite it being a watery/carbonated stout rather than a creamy/dense one like I usually prefer. There seems to be some debate here about how chocolatey it is. I found it to be delightfully less chocolatey than the overt claims on the label might imply. (369 characters)

Pours a nice two finger mocha colored head, body is pitch black. Head retention was above average, started dying halfway through, lacing was average.

Smell is of bakers chocolate, chocolate malt powder, and sweet caramel malt. Hops and alcohol aren't present.

Taste is of chocolate malt, slight cocoa powder also. Sweetness was cut by a hint of burnt metallic coffee. Hops were muted and alcohol was very light.

Mouthfeel was good for a light stout. Wish head contributed more to the body. Theres a slight chalky aftertaste.

Overall this was a decent representation of the style but nothing outstanding. There was something that tasted off but i couldn't pinpoint that thing. Glad I tried it but its far from the best in a crowded market. (742 characters)

For $2.29 at Trader Joe's, it's a must try...Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.

Looks good..But taste and aroma are quite lacking. And without a payoff kick, it's not so stout. (183 characters)

Boatswain Chocolate Stout
22 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "15 339 15"
$2.49 @ Trader Joe's #766, Tampa, FL

Although this beer appears to be contract brewed at the mighty Minhas Brewery, the label reads "BREWED & BOTTLED BY: RHINELANDER BREWING CO., LLC. MONROE WI 53566". I've contacted Rhinelander about the illegality of this labeling but have not heard back.

Notes: Distinctly chocolatey with a decisive bittersweet dark chocolate character. Some fruit and roasted character appears as well, both in the aroma and the flavor. The grassy and leafy hops, as might be expected for the style, are relegated to a background role. Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation level that leaves it with a delicate caress before smoothly passing. Balanced. Pleasant but still somehow lacking. (787 characters)

wow! very nice. very chocolate-y. very under-rated, I think... i'm not afraid to call it what it is- a Trader Joe's Special! okay..... but it's pretty darned good. low abv, but that transfers to taste (hopefully). I do not understand the "75" rating.... maybe because it IS Trader Joe's stuff... but this is pretty good, in my opinion, on a neutral evening, and with un-biased taste buds... (390 characters)

I tasted quite a bit more chocolate than many of the reviewers here, but generally concur that it falls short of what a chocolate stout can be. For the price, not bad at all, but quite a few other comparably-priced Trader Joe's offerings surpass it. (250 characters)

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. Another contract-brewed Trader Joe's offering.

Appearance: dark brown with lots of haze. Head pours a finger of creamy tan foam with great retention and a nice lace. A great looking beer, really.

Smell: subtle aroma of lightly sweet malt with some roasty qualities. Chocolate is minimal, but can sort of be distinguished.

Taste: lightly roasty malt flavor, with a little sour astringency. Rather homebrew-ey in its flavor, the chocolate is low-key but raw in nature. Not the satisfyingly silky treat that a chocolate stout should be. That said, it's mostly inoffensive.

Mouthfeel: medium body with an OK carbonation and a raspy creaminess. Not too bad, I guess.

Overall: it is unfortunate, but this doesn't seem like a super high quality beer. It's not horrible or anything, but a chocolate stout can be so much more than this. (889 characters)

Nice dark chocolate color with tan head
Milk chocolate smell
Taste is heavily chocolate with a touch of hops at the end
Mouthfeel is smooth with definite carbonation feel
Overall a good brew for the cost. A good session beer. (225 characters)

Appearance- pours a deep dark brown, nearly opaque black, with a tan frothy expresso like head, two fingered in height.

Smell-not surprised but chocolate! Lots of it, hint of bitterness aroma from the hopes.

Taste/mouthful- nice and smooth great body lives up to the stout style, almost creamy in texture, bitter sweet chocolate malt, hopped perfectly, just a hint of tanginess from the hops but sits back to let the chocolate take the fore front of the flavor. For 2.99 I was a sceptic, you could charge way more. Must try, would par Nicely with any desert. (563 characters)

Poured from a pint bottle into a pint glass. Pours a medium to dark brown with three fingers of a foamy khaki head. Smells of malt, hints of metal, and a corny lager smell overall not too appealing on the nose. It tastes of malt, hints of roast or smokiness, with a strong chocolate finishing taste, medium carbonation. Medium bodied with a crispy carbonation feel. Overall it's nothing exceptional and the best thing it has going for it is it's appearance (457 characters)

Poured into my frozen beer mug. The one thing this brew has going for it is the appearance - rich creamy brown foam with small to medium lacing. So dark when I held it up to the afternoon sun you STILL can't see through it. However, this one proves the saying 'you get what you pay for'. Yes, it is definitely a stout. It just lacks depth and has a certain watery body to it. Couldn't taste any chocolate, personally. A bit of creaminess with a slightly hoppy aftertaste. It's drinkable, but I won't be looking out for this one next time I'm in the store. (555 characters)

look: 3.75 | smell: 3 | taste: 2.75 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Guinness glass.

Appearance: Opaque black, modest light brown head.

Smell: The bottle smells kind of like an oatmeal stout with some cocoa. The glass seems to bring out some citrusy hops, as well. Bittersweet malt underneath. Smells like it's got more of a "brown" than "black" flavor profile.

Taste: The hints of cocoa powder are in there. The body of the beer is fairly weak -- keeps with the "brown" rather than "black" profile, kinda like a traditional porter. Underwhelming and kinda boring. A bit of hop acid around the edges.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full. Standard carb. Sugary.

Overall: Nothing special. Much cheaper than a chocolate stout from Rogue, but not nearly as enjoyable. (721 characters)

22 oz bottle, no apparent dating, poured in a tulip glass.

A - Dark black with brown highlights, a one finger tan head that moves to a thin lace.

S - Chocolate nibs (yep, said nibs), some dark fruit, coffee/nut notes, cocoa.

T - Some chocolate, cocoa, almond, and some unsettling smoke/ash on the finish, which ends up dominating the taste

M - Thin in the beginning, and it maintains its thinness as it warms. The carbonation level is moderate, trending to low.

O - Gave it a chance, but it wasn't happening. The chocolate fades fast, and you are left with smoke/ash. (573 characters)

1pint bottle

A- Black, no light comeing thru this one. 2 finger high head that is light coco in color, very creamy in appearance. Nice lacing up the sides as the head falls, there is visable lacing on the inside of the bottle, nice.

S- Malty, cocoa, bready, some slight sweetness from the bottle, more sweet coming from the glass.

T- Slightly sweet up front, then gets kinda...bland. Having a hard time tasting the malts and cocoa that is present from the bottle, slight metallic aftertaste.

M- Not quite medium, a soft slick feeling, its ok.

O- Looks good, smells decent from the bottle, not a fan of the flavor as it gets bunched up into nothing, was really hard for me to pick out the flavors that I smelled. Glad I did not pay much for this one, wont be getting it again. (780 characters)

A - Dark smoky color. Bit high on the froth, which comes out to a chocolate cream color.

S - Light smell, kind of bland. Can't really smell the sharp chocolate flavor.

T - No distinct flavor. No spices or chocolate taste.

M - Goes down smooth, and has a slight flavor that lingers.

O - Nothing that stands out. Light flavor and light feel. (343 characters)

Boatswain Chocolate Stout has a thick, soapy, beige head, a very dark-brown (essentially, black) appearance, some stray, ascending bubbles appearing on the sides of the glass, and a thin lacing sheen. The aroma is of sweet, malty, dark bread, char, a touch of chocolate, and some cream. Taste is of those elements, with a mellow bitterness. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, and Boatswain Chocolate Stout finishes semi-wet and easy drinking.

Trader Joe's Boatswain Chocolate Stout, brewed with cocoa powder. 5.4% ABV.

A: Light brown head. Utterly black, with very dark brown in the dimple, and the slightest golden brown glow underneath

S: Very dark powdered cocoa, bordering on coffee. Toasted almond? Not sure on that one.

T/MF: Very dark chocolate, with a hint of coffee.

Nothing special. Solid enough, though. Especially given the price.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass. (461 characters)

M: slightly slick

Poured from a 650 mL bottle into a snifter. Super dark brown bordering on black color with a golden medium brown finger of head. Head dissipated after a few moments. Little to no lacing occurred.

Rather pleasant nose with a predominately cocoa aroma with a hint of spice.

Decent mouth-feel with taste dominated by sweet chocolate notes, though some vanilla, cream soda, and coffee came through.

Overall a decent chocolate stout, definitely not horrible, with some great characteristics, though not a comprehensive package. Certainly unique and appreciable for it's good appearance and vibrant chocolate taste, but still quite a distance from perfection. (658 characters)

From the 750 ml. bottle obtained from a Trader Joe's. Sampled on March 11, 2014.

The pour is very nice and dark brown to about black with a modest long lasting tan head. It looks the way a stout should.

They boast that it is brewed with cocoa powder as opposed to just cocoa and that is mainly what I get at first along with some dark malts and a slight buttery sensation. Low hop note.

The body is a little under medium.

I am picking up some chocolate malts and a slightly bitter hop bitterness at the end. But the beer really feels like someone sprinkled some Nestle cocoa mix into the beer. That cocoa powder they boast about on the label tends to become its downfall. (676 characters)

Purchased from Trader Joes in Carmel Mountain, CA. Pours a dark black with a whiteish coffee colored head that faded quickly. Smell is of chocolate, malts, and kind of an earthy dry malty backbone to round out the nose. First sip, very malty, choclatey, smooth mouthfeel, pretty thin for a stout, but overall pleasant. Some coffee coming through a bit more as it warms up to room temp, balances out nicely with the malts and chocolate. Overall a pretty decent stout, I like that its not too heavy but still has some nice flavors coming through. (544 characters)

S: Vanilla, chocolate and dark roast coffee in the nose. Smells delicious.

T: Begins with tropical fruit, peach and orange, followed by medium and dark roast coffee and dark chocolate.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Definitely recommended if you like a good chocolate stout. Well worth a try. (331 characters)

Bottle from Santa
Pours a solid black with a smallish tan head.Aromas heavy on the roast and coffee and light on the chocolate as advertised. Bits of caramel and dark fruit round out the nose. The flavor is a slightly sweet roasty coffee malt beverage. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet roasty mouthfeel. Decent beer, but a bit one dimensional and not nearly enough chocolate of malty sweetness to make me think of chocolate. (452 characters)

Seven words or less: Solid value beer, chocolate coffee not bad

A: Solid black with a one finger head.

S: Chocolate and coffee.

T: I get a little chocolate, a little coffee, and a little bitterness at the end.

M: Pleasurable, semi-creamy.

O: This is a good beer, but great value for the price. $1.99 at Trader Joe's in Columbus, Ohio. Totally worth it! (357 characters)
