355ml bottle, from the Pizza Brew, well, pub, in NE Calgary, back in August, when it wasn't clear here who was brewing for the 'Berghoff' label now.

This beer pours a somewhat hazy dark cola hue, with one finger of puffy, loosely bubbly beige head, which leaves some broad swaths of landform lace around the glass as things duly drop away.

It smells of benign caramel malt, stale oily nuts, a soft apple mustiness, and very weak earthy hops, with a slightly skanky booziness. The taste is more nutty caramel malt, semi-fermented apples, earthy, weedy hops, and a touch of menthol like alcohol.

The carbonation is a bit active, but generally unobtrusive, the body a decent medium weight, and actually quite smooth. It finishes rather sweet, the nutty caramel and musty apple facing damned near nil in counterpoint.

Probably the 'best' offering of this particular line from Minhas - the house skank is kept to a minimum, though a whole lot more balance is required before this should mentioned in the same breath as the German greats. And what the hell is with the 'crispy' designator - are they going to come out with a 'Wet Berliner Weiss' next?

When Sir Dunkle was poured it had a brown coloring to it. The smell was of logs and it was a strong smell. A touch of sweet when tasted almost of nuts except it was more sour and rich with maybe a pinch of bitterness to it. Did not care for this beer very much when we had it in class.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Pours medium dark brown, reddish tones, touches of white foam. Light malty nose. Faint banana. Nutty taste, light caramel. Bananas in the background yet again. A touch sweet. Decent blend. Better than other Berghoff blends.

Beer was poured out from the bottle and into a pint glass. It appeared hazy brown in colour, but still had clarity to it. Smelled of sweet malty caramel with slight roasty notes to it. Tasted very much like a wheat beer with a slightly malted aftertaste.

Would I buy this beer again? Probably not.
