S-smells of cascade hops , more fruity than piney

T-big citrus fruit tasting IPA , Willamette hop's keep this brew crisp & clean tasting

MF-ok/decent carbonation , medium body

Bottle: Poured a light amber color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of citrus and floral ops is quite enjoyable. Taste is also dominated citrus hops with some floral undertones and lightly sweet malt notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Good interpretation of the style with limited bitterness and nice fresh hoppy aroma.

650ml bottle, which sure does look like it was labeled by the same outfit that does Prohibition Brewing's. One of the first brews now made at the Calgary location, apparently under the brewmaster tutelage of Dave Neilly, ex of Wild Rose, among others.

This beer pours a clear, somewhat glassy pale golden amber colour, with one finger of moderately foamy, bubbly, and even a little creamy off-white head, which leaves a decent array of low-lying pockmarked cement wall lace around the glass as it lazily and evenly subsides.

It smells of bready, kind of biscuity pale malt, faint hints of citrus and pine resin, a bit of cardboard box dustiness, and middling leafy, earthy hops. The taste is more bready, softly doughy pale malt, the barest hint of muddled citrus undertones, and more soft earthy, leafy hops. Simple, but in a very surprisingly good way - and the industrial plastic 'flavour' that I have to come to expect from this brewery is absent here, but has oh so ironically been taken up by my infant son, currently chewing on his baby-safe plastic toys.

The bubbles are rather restrained, and frothy at best, the body medium-light in weight, and actually quite smooth, with a burgeoning creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the doughy malt facing a weak, but at least representative dose of leafy, minty, and citrus hop esters.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle - the Calgary location's investment in a real craft brewer has rendered rather timely dividends. While the Minhas marketing machine is still running full tilt - this is hardly the 'authentic' IPA, as it is even tame by British standards, it is still quite drinkable, and more akin to a decent ESB, which ain't no bad thing in my books. Congratulations, um, Minhas, for finally hiring the right person for the the job. Time will tell if that sentiment persists.
