Poured from the tap a deep dark black with a thin mocha head.
Aroma of rosted malts, citrus and grassy hops.
As expected, the taste was hoppy with citrus and grassy notes and a nice balance from the roasted malts. Clean finish.
Light-to-medium bodied with a moderate carbonation.
I loved this Black IPA from Schlafly. A great take on your not-so-averag IPA.

Enjoyed on-cask @ the Schlafly Black IPA Cask Night @ the Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood, MO for $4.25. Tapped from the Cask into a 16oz Nonic Glass.
Aroma- Has a brewery's awesome hop aroma and this is the most dominant attribute. Good amount of citrus is found behind these hops.
Appearance- Received with no head at all (knew this was coming b/c of cask). Has a Deep Chai Latte color body and is very viscous looking. Leaves sudsy lacing behind.
Flavor- This brew as a strong cocoa flavor from the beginning. Not sure where this comes from but I dig it! Also has good hop flavor, mainly citrus and then has a medium-high hop bitterness on the finish.
Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, Light Carbonation, and has a huge malt presence in the mouthfeel. Not much else in here...
Overall Impression- An awesome "BrewPub"/Special Brew from Schlafly! Not much roastiness like I would imagine for this style but it was very impressive! Hope they brew this one again!

Pours an almost black color with barely visible garnet highlights. 1 finger light tan head dissipates fairly quickly into a light coating of foam that lingers.
Aroma is led by pine and resin with a funky skunk scent creeping in. Somewhat dank, light citrus in the background. There's a roasted malt presence, strong coffee with hints of malted milk balls.
Body is fairly light with moderate carbonation. It surprisingly costs the mouth fairly well.
Slightly sweet roasted malt carries the flavor throughout, with citrus hops weighing in heavily mid palate. A light bitter hop finish rounds out the flavor profile well. I wish the citrus hop flavor was a little more diverse.
One of the more malty black ipas I've tried. Also one of the more complex and intriguing. Definitely worth a try when delving into this relatively new style. Hard category to judge given the lack of guidelines, so my ratings are purely personal taste.
