Draft service into a shaker pint glass at Smugglers brewpub in Telluride.

A: Clear, ruby-brown color with a fine peripheral ring of off-white bubbles. Scant lacing remains on the glass.

S: Very mild; some roasted grain and a fine thread of fruit-infused wood.

T: Begins off-dry, with cakey malt that tastes of cherries. More roast emerges into the middle alongside mild wood smoke. Malt turns huskier in the finish, where deep caramel replaces the fruit from earlier.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, mild acidity arrives late on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This is a solid Scottish ale, for a brewpub. Malt isn't so much intense as it is nuanced. Still, it is enough to keep one's interest. Hardly a full-blown wee heavy. (739 characters)

Had this at the Montrose location in July of 2010.
Deep, dark brown with a little bit of red highlights when held up to the light. A thin white sheen is the only real head, although that's pretty normal.
Big sweet malts and cigars on the nose.
This brew is loaded with tons of sweet malts, dates, and just a hint of toastiness/smoke. Reminds me a lot of Old Chub, which I'd assume is an obvious inspiration.
Not as thick or rich as some others, but not as slick as many either. It's a good reference point right in the middle.
A sipper that wants to be consumed faster than you might expect.
Good stuff from Smuggler's. It's a style that can be really good or bad, and this one is definitely on the "good" side of things. (722 characters)
