Staropramen has a thick, off-white head and a clear, somewhat bubbly, golden appearance, with thin lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, biscuit and bready malt, with a touch of hop zing. Taste is of those elements, with a wonderful and dead-on hop bitterness rounding it out. Mouthfeel is light to medium and prickly, and Staropramen finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, dry, and delicious. Really, this is about as perfect as a beer can get, and I score it world class. This might be the best lager I’ve ever tried. Just fabulous and a must for beer lovers!

Don't get why this is a B- beer, I'm drinking it in Ireland though, maybe it doesn't handle its journey to America well. Tastes very much like Budweiser Budvar, not as hoppy as Pilsner Urquell, but as clean. It's got a great golden, triple decocted taste like a real czech pilsner should have. It smells great, no skunk, and tastes very refreshing and clean. I'm really enjoying this after a 9 to 9 day. Well done. Now to find it in America.

Brilliant Brilliant Beer! I had the pleasure of having this on tap in Prague and absolutely fell in love!

The beer pours a dark gold colour, with a nice white head, which disipates quite quickly to leave a ring.

Really fresh hops and malt aromas, fill the nose. It's quite sweet as well.

The taste doesn't disappoint. The malt and hops are really well balanced with a hint of sweetness and bitterness in perfect harmony.

It feels beautifully light and crisp in the mouth. Couldn't ask for a more refreshing pilsner.

Overall this is an unbelievable beer. Yes it is much better on tap but the 500ml bottle is also excellent. I reckon this is the best of the three main Czech pilsners.

It's not easy to add something new to existing reviews. I love Staropramen Lezak - aromatic, earthy, tasty, smooth and drinkable. To those who were somehow disappointed by this Czech classic, here are some observations:
1. The best Staropramen is on-tap, properly kept & served.
2. 500 cl bottles contain very good beer, too.
3. Staropramen from 330 cl bottles should not be different from the above, but it is! More acidity, less complexity.
4. Beer from 500 cl alu cans is the worst. They say it's licensed-brewed in Slovakia. Haven't checked it yet, but even in this form Staropramen has a score above many European lagers.

I agree with the Pilsner Urquell comparison with this one.. This one competes with the world class pils. Staropramen is a clear golden beer with a very small and fast disappearing head. The aroma is very inviting with sweet and hoppy tones. And the flavor is just like a czech pilsener should be very easily drinkable with a faint sweetness to start with but then dominated by the very nice hoppy bitterness. 5% ABV.

Appearance: pours a frothy eggshell head which recedes slowly with significant lacing. Color is a clear deep gold with moderate streaming carbonation.
Aroma: pleasant aroma of floral hops, yeasty bread, and some lightly roasted malt sweetness Mouthfeel: fairly light and crisp with a pleasingly dry finish.
Flavor: near perfect combination of bready malt, some nice sweetness to balance the floral and bittering hops.
Overall: an absolutely delicious beer. Smells and taste great. A pleasure to drink. Will definitely be trying this one again.

Pours a light, golden/yellow colour like many, many other beers. Has a thin, snow white head that is rather quick to dissipate. The smell is actually, as strange as it may sound, quite close to fresh cut green apples. The taste, too, reminds me faintly of apples. Leaves a very light lacing on ones glass with each drink. The mouth feel is nice and light-weight with light to moderate carbonation....leaning more towards light. This is a surprisingly easy to drink beer. I will most certainly spend money on this Czech again.

Poured in a pint from draft at Mark's on the Channel.

Appearance is crystal clear golden sunshine with cloudy white head and amazing tight intense fast-swirling carbonation from a good draft pour. Lacing is excellent, thick foam clings to the glass all the way to the bottom.

On the nose is a field of fresh jasmine and an abundant amount of grass. Also a hint of Belgian ester. Best smelling beer ever.

Taste was as expected: floral hops, grainy goodness and a hint of yeast.

In the mouth the beverage is luscious and well carbonated, bright and sunny. Goes down easy without a hint of hard skunkiness.

Overall, it appears as if I may have hit the jackpot with a relatively fresh batch, also on draft. I feel that this is a world class pils of a quality that would be hard to match

Deep gold color, clear. Tons of fine bubbles rising up to the top. Frothy head, leaves a nice lacing behind.

Sweet grass, pale malts, crisp.

Malt forward. Bready, pale malts, grassy. Light-medium bitterness, mostly herbal, a little lemony. Finish off dry bitter. Body is light, creamy texture, a little dry aftertaste, soft carbonation.

I first enjoyed this beer in Prague in 1992. I purchase it only occasionally in bottles because it seems invariably skunky when not on tap. Therefore, obviously, this beer is best enjoyed on tap. That being said, I understand the disappointment voiced by other reviewers whose only unfortunate experience with this wonderful beer has been from the bottle.

This is a good, solid, easy drinking beer. The flavors of hops and malt are in good balance. A slightly darker golden color than one expects from a pils. Pours with a finger or two of head and leaves a farily delicate lace. The mouthfeel is smooth and very drinkable. Staropramen is a great choice for beer that can be enjoyed by those who appreciate quality beer and those who are happy with whatever is cold.

Poured into a pilsner glass from a 12oz bottle.

Pours a golden color, with substantial carbonation and nice little ring at the top. Not much else to speak of, except that it contains the appearance of a beer that is simple and clear, and hopefully, to the point.

The aroma is pretty grainy and slightly spiced overall, but there isn't much to write about as it is subtle throughout. However, from what I can gather, there's plenty of cereal grains, floral saaz hops, and a little bit of alcohol. Again, at this point I can hear the beer "begging me" to tasted, and cannot linger any longer in this section.

I take one sip and feel good. I take another sip and feel better. Upon the third sip, I feel addicted. This is great! With a thick body, juicy malts, and spice aided by the hops, this is ridiculously tasty for what it is. What I especially love is the sweetness within this beer - it's so crisp and delicious. Ever since trying this a week ago, I've found it to be very welcoming for it's clean, flavorful experience.

It's simple, sure, but it really is a beer that must be taken for what it is. There are more "complex" beers out there, but this is perfectly refreshing on its own or accompanied with any meal. A great beer, proving the saying that "less is more."

A - thin head but plenty of bubbles, very clear dark light amber (or dark gold)

S - honey and oats, very rich and seductive

T - the classic bitter of a good pils with a floral notes. Biscuit-like sweetness gives way to a dry, earthy aftertaste. Complex. Earthy flavors give way to a sustained sweetness with a classic pils bittering.

M - smooth and sticky

D - top notch, for anybody who loves a beer that reminds them of a good bread.

A wonderful lager, having never tried it in the UK, it was the first on my list to try while in Prague, where it is brewed.

It is most certainly refreshing - with an incredibly fresh aroma of hops. A hint of citrus and a soft bitterness follow the initial taste, leaving the drinker with a memorable impression.

Definitely a great example of Czech brewmanship.

poured into SA patented Boston Lager glass...

A: pours a dark golden hue with great clarity and a large fluffy white head with good retention leaving some webbed lacing

S: has a bread dough-scented malt center, with a honey graham aroma and light noble hop aroma in the finish. very pleasant.

T: spicy earthy noble hops with a light lemon zest, and again the italian bread dough flavor. finishing off with bread crust and bitter hops.

M: a medium body with a low to medium carbonation and a slippery mouthfeel and a sticky off dry finish.

Overall, there isn't much to say about Staropramen other than "classic". I rank this up there with Pilsner Urquell and Golden Pheasant. I will definitely buy again.

Visual: Medium gold color. Slightly creamy head. Adequate carbonation.
Aroma: Hoppy aroma jumps out of bottle, quickly diminishes some, but remains at a subdued level – a nice spiciness persists as long as the beer last in the glass.
Flavor: Hops dominate, mostly through bitterness, but bitterness remains balanced by malt throughout – from start to finish. Bitterness never really shouts out at any time.
Mouthfeel: Fine, not a spritzy as some pils type beers.
Overall: Very clean and quite even throughout the experience. A winner! Between this beer and Pilsner Urquell (the other Czech lager available at the local liquor store), it is pretty much sixes.

Golden color, brilliantly clear. Large white head, somewhat creamy and with good retention.

Some noble hop aroma, otherwise quite clean.

Nice maltiness up front, melding nicely to Saaz-like hop flavor and bitterness. Finishes bitter, but pleasantly so. Nicely largered - very clean flavor profile.

Medium body and carbonation. No astringency or warming.

A nice hoppy lager, clean and flavorful.

I'd have to say this is my favorite Czech beer so far.

The taste is very smooth and refreshing. A bit malty and sweet which gives it an exotic taste you won't find in most Lagers. The aroma is great, a bit spicy and pleasent. This goes down with no problem and could see myself drinking a few of these down on a hot day.

Yes, it tastes a bit light but I am not reviewing this expecting a strong beer. I would highly recommend this beer out of most East European Lagers.

A - Golden in color, no head, light carbonation.

S - Malty, minerally, and slight honey.

T - Malty, bready, slightly sour, but pretty interesting.

M - Sour, bready, but well balanced though.

D - This beer definitely grows on you, Definitely good for a pilsener.

While visiting Prague not too long after the Velvet Revolution, I was new to beer, and found that the lagers throughout this new country were the perfect antidote to the mid-summer Continental heat and humidity. Of all the beers I tried, I recall this being my favorite, but it has never been available where I live. A recent trip to Toronto allowed me to grab a tall can of this trip down memory lane...

Poured into my souvenir Staropramen 50cl mug, from a pub in the backstreets of Prague whose name I don't remember, this pilsener is a very nice light golden colour, with a copious amount of light, white head, which disappears quickly, leaving lace all over the place. The smell takes me back to those dark, cool pubs near the Strahov Stadium, taking refuge in wonderful 50 cent frosty beer, no-English environments. It's all bready, biscuity malt and grassy green hops on the nose, and crisp hops and white crackers in the taste, very easy to drink, moderately carbonated, with a clean finish. I'm not saying this can is as good as a pint in a Prague pub, but that was a long time ago, so this will have to do, and do nicely.

Had my first sample today - this is definitely going to be one of my favourite pilseners in the future (whenever I can afford it, or get it abroad). I guess the Czechs won't call it a pilsener as it's not being brewed in Plzen, but to me it's a pils good enough. Good lasting head, delicious Saaz aroma, pleasant flavour, very well balanced, better aftertaste than most pilseners.

Poured a golden colour with a small head that disappeared almost instantaneously. It smelled very hoppy, sweet and fruity. Has a sweet citrussy flavour with a bit of bite at the end. Mouthfeel is light and fizzy. Very drinkable especially on a hot summer day. I should have bought more!

12 oz into a pint

A - Pours a clean and clear golden color. Very pils. Lots of carbonation with significant bubbling. head formation is strong, then laces down to a film. Light white in color.

S - Pilsner malts - very strong malty notes with the spicy funk of the pils. No hopping. A pils is distinct, and i would say this beer fits.

T - Starts off with a light malt sweetness, which immediately brings in the heavy bready notes of the pils malts. Mid-stream gets bitter, light floral hops. Finishes with a renewed pils malt zing and some yeast spice.

M - Good beer body - bolstered by good carbonation bite. Leaves behind a light sugar coating. Overall the carbonation is very potent, stinging.

D - Easy drinking. ABV is on target with easy sessioning. Flavors are well integrated. "Less Filling". Good overall.

A friend originally from Prague introduced me to this brew several years ago.

At first pour into my favorite pub glass, it had a nice 2" head. Tiny bubbles atop a rich looking yellow sea.

After a third of the glass was gone, there was a kind of lace design on the sides of my glass in place of the head now replaced with a 1/8" head and a sort of halo.

It has a wheaty sort of peanut smell to me and tastes a little nutty too. I like the hop flavor, but I'm not quite sure how to describe it other than saying that it's not bitter and leaves a slick feeling on my teeth. Has a slight saltiness. The only fruit type flavor I taste is something like apples or applesauce.

Mouthfeel is smooth and velvet like, and I would say carbonation is just right. Crisp and refreshing, I'm about to pour my third one and I'm still looking forward to it.

Poured a deep golden color with imprerssive white puffy head. Virtually no lacing. Smell is sweet and citrus-like with some strong lemon notes Taste is extremely crisp and almost austerely dry, yet very thirst-quenching. Finishes with a strong dryness that beckons for another taste. Very drinkable. Nice example of the style.
