Gold colored beer with a rapidly fading head.Aroma is grainy with a hint of skunkiness.Taste is grainy and sweet with a tad of butter.Overall pretty bland and boring not horrible but not great either.I don't think you'll be missing much if you never try this. This is my last one for sure.

Pristine dark amber with pale lemon trim. The pearl colored lid is probably the best part of the appearance. It's at least two fingers after the pour, has a tight-bubbled texture and is leaving scads of sticky lace. Most pilseners aren't this dark, but I'm not about to hold that against it.

Thanks to the green glass bottle, I caught a whiff of skunkiness when the cap was popped; most of which is now gone. What's left isn't great and certainly isn't hoppy enough for a pils. Staropramen smells like every other Euro pale lager on the face of the earth. Although it's still several months before the 'best by' date, it smells like it's long past.

I haven't had a good Czech pilsener in quite some time. For some reason, I actually thought this beer had a chance to remedy that. It doesn't. I will give it credit for being more hoppy and more bitter than most EPLs (which it resembles much more than it does a pilsener), but it's far from outstanding beer.

There's a decent amount of pale malt that provides an underlying sweetness and keeps the bitterness of the hops from getting out of control. The hops themselves are grassy and spicy, but taste dull and stale rather than bright and fresh. At least there are enough ingredients, which gives the beer a leg up on most Euro lagers. Warming brings about the expected (minor in this case) flavor deterioration

The mouthfeel struggles to be average... and doesn't quite make it. I found some enjoyment early in the bottle, but what bubbles were present have now exhausted themselves. Things feel borderline flat as a result. A decent amount of carbonation was only chance the mouthfeel had and it blew it.

Staropramen Lager is the only beer from this brewery that I've ever had. Looking at the number of reviews for the rest of their lineup, I might never run across another one. That's okay, there's nothing here to make me the least bit curious about what else these guys have up their sleeves. If you give this one a shot, don't expect rabbits. Skunks are a distinct possibility though.

It's a typical lager, probably better than most of the international lagers it competes against, but only average in terms of Czech Pilsners. Decent for a beer of this type, though nothing special.

It's quite drinkable, without having any rich, complex flavours to speak about. Good, but only if your primary objective is to urgently quench your thirst.

A: Pours a golden liquid with lots of carbonation bubbles into the glass. A two finger high head forms at first and then dissolves leaving nice lacings on the glass.

S: Smells like any other Pilsener. A bit of hay, some very faint hop tones. Baking soda. In general there is not much smell at all.

T: Tastes white bread, almost no hop flavours at all. Some very low bitterness at the end.

M: Surprisinlgy it feels oily and watery at the same time. Low to medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: Nothing special. An ordinary beer for ordinary people.

Poured into a 16oz Pilsner Glass

Appearance - Crystal Clear Light Brown/Tan color with quite a bit of carbonation. Pours a 1 finger head with trace amounts of lacing

Smell - Yeast and Malts with a rather powerful skunky aroma. I can also smell some citrus and cooked corn notes as well. It's an offensive smelling combination to say the least

Taste - It's got a very yeasty and mild citrus flavors as well as some slight floral hops and sweet malts. This tastes ALOT better than it smells, which I wasn't expecting

Mouthfeel - It's a fairly light bodied beer and the carbonation is not too intense. It's not smooth or creamy but it's a pretty easy Pilsner to drink regardless.

Overall - It's a pretty average Pilsner that tastes better than it smells and it's fairly easy to drink. There are better Pilsners out there, but it's a clean yet unremarkable Pilsner.

A decent beer for it's style but it hardly has any smell and not a whole lot of flavor either except the typical skunky taste, it got a bit metallic as it got warmer. It has a light feel thats easy to drink.

Gold amber body, with a minimal fimly head. No head retention or lacing. Quite a thin body to it. Good amount of carbonation.

Some Saaz on the nose, but not as piquantly hoppy as I'd expect from a good Czech pilsener. A fair amount of honey-like sweetness dulls the fragrance of the hops. It's not a bad smelling beer, but a little tame for a true pils.

The balance on the palate is as I would expect from the nose. There's a strong honey-like malt sweetness which permeates throughout, and only a hint of the zingy, zesty hops. Bitterness is lower than expected. Mouthfeel is crispt but a little flat.

However, this one drinks pretty smoothly, and there's few actual flaws in the flavour. It does end up tasting rather dull though...

Clear pale gold color, big-bubbled white head of 1/2 an inch. Slightly skunked aroma. Sweet malty flavor with a decided wet canvas impression that's re-inforced by the aroma. Slight watery sense before a mild hoppy finish mid-mouth. Carbonation is medium, perhaps this beer's best quality. OK in drinkability but nothing special is going on in this brew, some similarities to Heineken et al....

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a pint glass at low altitude.

A: Pours a relatively dark completely translucent golden color with a minimal white head. A few bubbles of carbonation flowing up toward the top of the glass.

S: Overall, not a very strong smell. Malty notes up front with some faint floral hops in the background.

T: In line with the smell. Malty flavors take center stage, with less prominent floral hops in the background. As a result, the level of bitterness is a little bit lower than I'd like.

M: Light-bodied with a wet mouthfeel and plenty of carbonation to tickle the tongue. Mouthfeel is the best aspect of this beer.

D: Reasonably priced for an imported beer, but not one I'd go out of my way to buy.

11.2 oz (GREEN >_<) bottle into a wine glass.

A: Pours a clear golden color. The head is a finger high, with a white shade. Its texture is surprisingly creamy, and even has some decent retention. A thick ring of lacing is left behind, due to how sticky the froth is.

S: Unfortunately, this about a 7.5/10 on the skunk scale. Sure, I also pick up some malt sweetness and touches of Saaz grassiness, but the skunk pretty much takes this over. What a shame - although, beers like this usually taste pretty good even when they're skunked (see: Urquell, Pilsner).

T: Fairly sweet for the style. There's a combination of malt sweetness and even some cereal grain, although diacetyl is somewhat low for the style (not a bad thing!) There even seem to be touches of white wine sweetness lingering throughout. It could also use a touch more hoppiness. While flavor-wise it's closer to PBR than Urquell, this could still get the job done if so inclined.

M: Not as bone-dry as I enjoy from a pilsner, but nonetheless, it does a good job of quenching one's thirst. There is a nice crispness to it, along with decent carbonation. Still, I can't help but wish it were even more effortless.

O: This tastes 'cheaper' than something like Urquell, but it isn't exactly bad, either. Still, considering I could easily get the former at the same price of this offering, it's hard for me to want to revisit this.

2.85/5: A poor man's Urquell

My green bottle looks slightly different than the one pictured. It pours a clear pale yellow with a two inch offwhite head. Head collapses quickly into patchy lacing. Aroma has some Euro skunked cardboard which masks some hints of lemon. Mouthfeel is light bodied and fizzy with carbonation. Taste is mostly hop bitterness, just a hint of sweet malt. Very one dimensional with this lack of malt balance. Finishes bitter, and astringency detracts greatly from drinkability.

Faint aroma is mostly sweet pale malt with fistful of spring flowers. Tall, light, bright white head held for a while leaving some random patches of lace. Transparent, pale golden beer holds a few streams of tiny bubbles. Tastes like sweet dandelions. Instead of a hop bite in the finish there is a faint twang. Just a strange pils. It's good for another 7 months so that shouldn't be a problem. I'd like some more grassy/spicy hops, a bit of bite in the finish, and a crisp drinking beer.

The bottle says best before January 2008, so we're safe there. Poured into a pint glass. Apple juice color, basically the same look as American macro brews.

Smells of hops and there's also a faint smell of earthiness and some spices. A touch of skunkiness. As far as taste goes, this beer would be easy to drink, but it's a bit too skunky. Lots of pilsners have a little skunkiness to them, but this one has a bit too much. The hops outweigh the malts, but it's probably smooth enough to satisfy most palates. Overall, a slightly below average Czech pilsner.

It goes down well with meat and potatoes. Can be filling over long sessions, but it's a decent session beer. It's better than American macro brews, but there are better pilsners out there.

fantastic appearance, Champagne like carbonation supports a very sticky ivory white head, On the darker end of pilsners although still pale yellow.

Sweet sweet sweet....This has a nice body, mouthfeel, drinkability is solid. If it just picked up the hops a bit or toned down the sugary like sweetness it would be outstanding. Finishes pretty clean and crisp.

Picked this bitch up for $2.99 a sixer at bevmo on sale. Best before date is a couple months past due. I tend to not shy away from beers past their supposed prime and have had nothing but success to this point. I couldn't pass up the price and it turns out the beer was fine.

Pours a nice deep golden colour with a finger head that dissipates quite quickly.

Smell is grainy with maybe a bit of floral smell, not overly strong.

Bitter finish, malty, clean on teh mouth with a fair bit of carbonation.

Great on a warm summer day, not too different from many other pilseners, doesn't really stand out from the NA's.

Nice golden colour, handsome to look at. If it gave up some head or lace it would do even better.

Aroma of hops and sour green apples. Slightly sweet up front with a nice, moderately bitter hop finish that is happy to linger a bit. No malts and a touch of sulphur roughen this up some. Watery mouthfeel.

Better than a plain Jane macro, but not real special.

Good two finger head of moderate size bubbles, lace like snowflakes and clings. Color is a 7 on the SRM beer color chart, and just a bit cloudy. Smells of mild wet wheat, and malt. I detect flavors of wheat, hops, malt. Nothing special here, but not a real bad taste. Has some body as it flows over my tongue. I don't think I will have another one of these, but it was worth the experience of tasting it.

Seems to be similar to a Pilsner Urquell, also in a green bottle. This is from a large brewer and is better than the majors over here, the ABV is 5.2%.

This beer pours a clear golden-straw color. The head is one inch in height and recedes slowly into nice lacing. The aroma is of biscuits with a touch of spicy hops, but it is quite faint. The taste is even more faint than the aroma, with only a slight hint of bready malt. The mouthfeel is light bodied with nice carbonation. Overall, this is nothing really bad about this beer, but there is nothing good about it either. I cannot see myself drinking this again.

A - A darker gold than I expected. An aggressive pour gives a rocky cap that's fading. Very little visible carbonation.

S - Some graininess and grassy hops, but they're very mild. There's an odd note in the background. It gives the impression that it's going to be sweet.

T - Unfortunately, it follows the nose pretty well. The grainy notes are very light; it seems like they skipped out on the pilsner malt. It leans toward the sweet side instead, which doesn't fit really well. There are some light herbal hops and some bitterness, but it just seems lacking in comparison with fresh examples from the US(this bottle well within date).

MF - Leaning towards the lighter side, but there just isn't enough carbonation to give it any life or to really make it refreshing. It just feels old and uninspired.

D - In a style that excels here, this definitely disappoints. It doesn't have the body or flavor that makes pilsners so good.

Poured from a bottle, golden, nice. Typical head, some lace.

Aroma: Big time "euro-skunk", not real appealing.

Taste: Not much skunk, surprising. Taste of corn, grass, and a bit of malt. Finishes a bit sour, but, fairly clean.

Not a bad lager, but, not near the best.

Clear, tawny copper, bordering on a crystal clear golden hue. Thin, dusty white head that is quick to dissolve. Sweet grains, husky malts, a near-Euro skunking aroma that does not detract from the quality. Crisp grassy hops, medium carbonation. Not much going on here. Turns a bit dry; light bodied. Musk like malts and a lingering dry hops felt towards the end. Simple. Too simple.

Staropramen Prague Lager

A- Pretty, clear, and surprisingly nice head. Thick lacing. Wheat in color, great carbonation bubbles.

S- A little sweet on the nose. Has that smell boring lagers have- like an old sponge. That sounds more negative than it should, particularly for this beer. It’s just an average “beer” smell.

T- Wheaty, light hops. Clean and soapy. Good carbonation, turned out to be a decent lager. Doesn’t blow me away, but it would be fine as a session beer.
