Pale golden colour, just over one finger of white sticky-fluffy head, lots of lace left behind, honestly one of the best looking beers in recent memory. Smell is grainy and malty, grassy with some floral scents, lightly bitter hop and lemon rind. Taste is malty and grassy, lightly bitter, mild hop bite, lemon, good balance, clean finish, grainy aftertaste. Medium carbonation, light body and fairly thin feel leaves a bit to be desired. Nice and easy drinking, refreshing and enjoyable even if it is a little one dimensional and simple but sometimes that is all you are looking for.

appearance; crystal clear, golden hue, with a white head of loosly held together foam. Dissipates relatively quickly, leaving sporatic lacing at best.

smell; spicy herbal hops, with a lightly roasted, cracker-like malt. Just a hint of doughy sweetness but mostly the appropriate hops are perceived.

taste; mildly bitter hops, with some doughy malt in the finish. Pretty one dimensional but nicely balanced.

mouthfeel; loose and crisp, very refreshing with a light finish.

overall; nothing special but a nice refreshing drink.

Poured into a 16oz Pilsner Glass

Appearance - Crystal Clear Light Brown/Tan color with quite a bit of carbonation. Pours a 1 finger head with trace amounts of lacing

Smell - Yeast and Malts with a rather powerful skunky aroma. I can also smell some citrus and cooked corn notes as well. It's an offensive smelling combination to say the least

Taste - It's got a very yeasty and mild citrus flavors as well as some slight floral hops and sweet malts. This tastes ALOT better than it smells, which I wasn't expecting

Mouthfeel - It's a fairly light bodied beer and the carbonation is not too intense. It's not smooth or creamy but it's a pretty easy Pilsner to drink regardless.

Overall - It's a pretty average Pilsner that tastes better than it smells and it's fairly easy to drink. There are better Pilsners out there, but it's a clean yet unremarkable Pilsner.

Appearance: Poured into a stange. The color is gold or bronze. Four fingers of fluffy, white head dissipated quickly to leave trails of foam on the glass, a billowy cap, and, eventually, a spotted lacing and ring around the edge.

Smell: It has that enticing Czech skunkiness right out of the bottle. The aroma is clean and crisp with tons of barnyard hay and grassy Saaz hops. There is also lemon zest, apple tartness, and spice.

Taste: Delicious and refreshing. Lots of light malts, Saaziness (grass and bitterness), lemon zest, green apple tartness, and a little metallic bitterness.

Drinkability: It is not going to blow one away with its complexity, but it is a very tasty pilsner that, as far as my experience goes, exemplifies the style.

Clear bronze with loose white froth that fades to patchy film that rims and rings. Nose is big skunk (both hops and just plan skunk, I suspect) and beeswax honey.
Sourdough loaf with Seville orange marmalade with mild hay hops plus hints of lemon zest and caraway. Honey graham finish and lingering bitter tang.
Light, crisp, round, very clean.

Malt over hops (until it loses quite a lot of chill) which is not to style for Czech pils. I wonder if that has to do with the maltose syrup I see in the ingredient list. But the body is right there and it's not unpleasant. Quality lager, at least.

Picked this up for $1.50 at Trader Joe's - why not? Bottle says best before 5 August 2012. No problem. Tasted 15 October 2011, reviewed from notes.

Pours a bright golden-orange color, like sparkling apple juice. Looks quite dark for a pilsner. Half-finger whitish head, fades fast, little lacing.

Smells rather nice. Some warm pilsner malt, hops that bring light fresh spice. Clean and crisp, with one exception: there's an odd background aroma, though, like a hint of apple and a hint of solvent.

Taste is thin, dominated mostly by the pale malts. Very little hop presence, tastes faded and soft rather than crisp.

Mouthfeel is fine. Thin body, watery texture, enough carbonation comes in late that I'm not disappointed.

I'll admit that I often finds pilsners to be rather blah. But this one stands out from the pack in being especially dull. It doesn't taste bad, but I have few positive things to say about it.

From notes... One of the many beers I scored on my birthday.

A - Pours a crystal clear golden colour, two fingers of big bubbled head with solid retention and some sporadic lacing.

S - Sweet corn and grassy hops.

T - Classic flavours for the style with the sweet corn and grassy hops dominate with a touch of bitterness on the finish.

M - Medium bodied but goes down a tad prickly. Given the style, this should be a smooth drinking ale.

O - Tastes like a typical mass produced pilsener. Nothing particularly interesting about this one.

11.2 oz. green bottle,

A: Pours a dark gold with a small white head. Solid retention, fairly good lace.

S: Pils malt and Saaz hops, a classic smell, but not vibrant.

T: Bready malt next to sulfur mine. Okay its not that bad, but the sulfur is clearly noticable, but it's fun here as it can be in pilsners. Dry floral hops, biting on the finish.

M: Crisp, smooth, light-bodied. Biting carbonation.

O: A pretty good Czech pilsner and I'm sure it's better in Prague. Stop with the green bottles please, it stopped me from buying this for years until I finally found a single.

Gotta love a good green bottle. Heinekin and Stella need not apply.

A: Pours darker than most pilseners. Good clarity though. Head is as white as the notecard I'm writing this on. Dissipates rapidly.

S: Skunky green lager smell. Hay, citrus zest hops, slight metallic edge.

T: The skunk is way more muted in the taste. Nice bitterness carries the finish. Otherwise, pretty nondescript. Grain notes (not really malt, though), barnyard, slight metallic taste, little bit of green apple. Nothing very flavorful though. All these tastes are mild. Except for the bitterness of the hops on the end.

M: The really positive aspect of this beer. Mouthfeel is nice. Not overly carbonated like a Czech pilsener can be. Little smoother, glides down a little easier.

O: Being a self admitted pilsener lover, I have to wonder if I'm running into a wall of taste here. It's my favorite beer, but it seems as though it's a tad one dimensional. You could line 5 of them up at varying price points and I'd be hard pressed to name two of the five blind. Time to switch it up, I suppose.

A- Clear golden, head retention is kinda subpar. Little lacing.
S- The smell is of stale bread dough, a light papperyness, and a bit of noble hops.
T- It's got the right idea for a pilsner. It's sweet and lightly earthy. Slightly grassy. But there is just a lingering staleness that rings it down.
M- Medium-light body, too low on the carb.
O- This was underwhelming. I didn't particularly care for this beer. The staleness and low carbonation just don't do it for me.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a pint glass at low altitude.

A: Pours a relatively dark completely translucent golden color with a minimal white head. A few bubbles of carbonation flowing up toward the top of the glass.

S: Overall, not a very strong smell. Malty notes up front with some faint floral hops in the background.

T: In line with the smell. Malty flavors take center stage, with less prominent floral hops in the background. As a result, the level of bitterness is a little bit lower than I'd like.

M: Light-bodied with a wet mouthfeel and plenty of carbonation to tickle the tongue. Mouthfeel is the best aspect of this beer.

D: Reasonably priced for an imported beer, but not one I'd go out of my way to buy.

poured into SA patented Boston Lager glass...

A: pours a dark golden hue with great clarity and a large fluffy white head with good retention leaving some webbed lacing

S: has a bread dough-scented malt center, with a honey graham aroma and light noble hop aroma in the finish. very pleasant.

T: spicy earthy noble hops with a light lemon zest, and again the italian bread dough flavor. finishing off with bread crust and bitter hops.

M: a medium body with a low to medium carbonation and a slippery mouthfeel and a sticky off dry finish.

Overall, there isn't much to say about Staropramen other than "classic". I rank this up there with Pilsner Urquell and Golden Pheasant. I will definitely buy again.

Dark gold with a light copper glow lets me know there is more than pils malt in this one. Big whiff of skunk overwhelms all else. Grass clipping hoppiness peaks through but malt is thin and can't stand up to the green bottle curse. Even if this had been deskunked it wouldn't have been close to the Czech pilsener style. More in line with the average Euro pale lager. I would take semi-fresh Urquell over this, which isn't saying much.

Staropramen pours a totally clear straw-gold hue and is topped with a small but sudsy cap of froth. The nose is lightly spicy and somehow suggests an intangible mealy essence. The flavor is quite nice, offering very crisp and clean mineral notes, husky grain, a light floral nuance and a herbal-earthy bitterness upon the finish. The feel is quite nice as well; very refreshing. Overall, this is a damn solid Pils.

Purchased in Czech republic so I expected to be different from the export version widely available on the local shelves here.
Very clear golden body that exhibits little effervescence gets topped by mid-sized, lasting dense white head. Aroma is rich malted barley and floral-spicy noble hops with traces of diacetyl. The malt-aroma is somewhat biscuity, toast-like, with almost melanoidin qualities which probably results from decoction mashing. The beer is crispy yet smooth on the palate, medium bodied with tongue-coating diacetyl that enhances the perception of body giving it additional fullness. The complex pale malt is counterbalanced by prominent yet soft, well rounded, non-lingering bitterness brought in by spicy noble hops. Good one - my impression is that the Czech beers brewed for domestic consumption always differ from their export versions and Staropramen is no exception with its fuller palate and richer mat-character. (500 ml, BB date reads March 2012, into the mug.)

A wonderful lager, having never tried it in the UK, it was the first on my list to try while in Prague, where it is brewed.

It is most certainly refreshing - with an incredibly fresh aroma of hops. A hint of citrus and a soft bitterness follow the initial taste, leaving the drinker with a memorable impression.

Definitely a great example of Czech brewmanship.

[Update Jan 23 2013]

500 mL can from TBS; best before Aug 19 2013. As far as pilseners go, I've never considered this an especially great example - but I've been revisiting a lot of my old reviews lately, and figured this one was worth another tipple.

Pours a deep golden-yellow colour, topped with nearly two fingers of frothy, soapy white head that slowly seeps away over a period of minutes. It leaves behind a doily-pattern of lacing on the sides, as well as a thin cap at the surface. The aroma is reasonably enticing and spot-on for the style; lots of grainy malts, biscuits, floral hops and dry grass. I've never been a big fan of this beer, but I must admit - it looks great, and smells pretty good too.

The taste, however, is where things go off the rails a bit. Don't get me wrong - it's not unpalatable, but by Czech pils standards it leaves much to be desired. The bulk of the flavour is comprised of grainy malts and dry crackers or biscuits, followed by some light grassiness, lemon zest, and some syrupy sweetness that gives off a serious adjunct vibe. The finish is fairly clean and a little dry, but doesn't linger. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation for the style that gives it a relatively smooth, crisp feel in the mouth. Very high drinkability; like most pale lagers, this stuff was made for sessioning.

Final Grade: 3.26, a C+. Staropramen Lager is a decent pilsener, but I certainly wouldn't consider it an especially memorable example of the style. I've had this many times before, and will probably return to it again at some point - but if push came to shove, there are several other Czech-style beers (Pilsner Urquell, Golden Pheasant, etc.) that I'd definitely pick first. If you're just a fan of Euro lagers and are looking for a cheap, passable pilsener to slug back, this stuff will get the job done, but serious lager fans will probably find Staropramen to be a fairly forgettable offering. A serviceable, boring lager that is worth at least one try, if only because of the price point.

Green bottle, straw faint yellow beer inside, soapy head, flimsy retention. Nice skunky aroma, me likee.

Taste, hopping good, light, maybe EKG hops, lots of carbonation, light lemon lime mouthfeel to it. Metallic at times, although somewhat complimentary, bitterness existent and satisfying for style. Derive nothing from pale/crystal malt here or the yeast.

Wish these were a little more available, they aren't bad in July/August, but they are a little pricey for what you get.

Staropramen is also made in Apatinska brewery,i tried original Chech also, and the difference is huge. It is poured from the can.

A- Big foam, that lasts about 5 minutes. Sunset orange color with medium carbonation.

S-Very nice smell, high hops aroma with some citrus tastes.

T/M-As i said, typical Czech pilsner, high bitterness, refreshing pilsner taste, very high hops aroma. Carbonation is not that high.

Brilliant Brilliant Beer! I had the pleasure of having this on tap in Prague and absolutely fell in love!

The beer pours a dark gold colour, with a nice white head, which disipates quite quickly to leave a ring.

Really fresh hops and malt aromas, fill the nose. It's quite sweet as well.

The taste doesn't disappoint. The malt and hops are really well balanced with a hint of sweetness and bitterness in perfect harmony.

It feels beautifully light and crisp in the mouth. Couldn't ask for a more refreshing pilsner.

Overall this is an unbelievable beer. Yes it is much better on tap but the 500ml bottle is also excellent. I reckon this is the best of the three main Czech pilsners.
