From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #68 (Spetember 2012):
LOOK: Clear and amber, beautiful lacing
SMELL: Fresh, grass, cooked hops, caramel, faint cooked veggies, herbal, grainy
TASTE: Moderate body, smooth, slight creaminess, very bready, bit of caramel, hay, slightly bitter, herbal, relatively clean, vegtal, peppery, semi-dry finish
A very well put together lager, proof that imported green bottle can contain good beer. Perfect balance gives this beer such a high level of drinkability. A great beer to switch things up. A reminder that not all lagers are thin, yellow, fizzy empty shells.
STYLE: Czech Red Lager

Served in special Staropramen Granát glass (resembles pilsner glass) at brewery in Prague.
A - 4.5. A lovely, clear reddish-amber with golden highlights topped by a fluffy off-white head. Head has good duration and leaves lots of coating on the glass.
Aroma: medium and light malts with some (Zatek?) hops.
T - a rich version of a standard czech lageer, with traces of the dark malt flavor of Czech tmavy (dunkel). A particularly nice finish featuring both toasted malt and hops
M - medium body; good medium carbonation; slight dryness in finish.
O - a fine medium—dark lager worth seeking out

A red beer, with lace. Bit of malt and cheese in aroma. Decent Vienna. Appropriate carbonation, medium mouthfeel. Slight bitterness and mdoerate sweetness. In the sip there is a touch of fruit, barley, toast, hop. All around balanced. I can drink one, though only the one.

Nice pale amber colour with a lot of small bubbles running trough. The head is creamy and snow white and doesn’t disappear.
The odour is quite strong: lot of hops and malt/grains.
Taste is very refreshing. Lower alcohol, but very rich and creamy taste. Soft hop bitterness with malty dry ending.
Aftertaste is still dry with on top hops. Feels like nuts.
I believe this is a good beer. Not complex, but honestly refreshing and simple.

Comes in a tall thin 33cl long neck green bottle with a red label featuring nothing but writing, mostly in English. Ingredients comply with the purity law. Best before 4/3/04, I opened it on 11/12/03.
Poured a clear orangish red under a thin short-lived tan head that left no collar and no lace. The nose is very mild, with just a touch of metallic hops. The mouth is well carbonated and medium-bodied, with just a touch of sweetness. The taste opens with a heavy malt taste, almost like syrup. The mild but metallic hops come out in the finish, particularly after you've had a few sips. The aftertaste gets stronger, with a mainly bitter impression. The taste grows on you.

Staropramen...on tap at Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, NY
Appearance-dark gold amber color, large white head in the pint glass, stays around
Smell-grain and spice, some honey and fruit as well, aromatic
Taste/Mouthfeel-again an interesting mix of grain and fruit, spice mixed too, the flavors are all interesting I'm just not sure they work entirely, still a lot is going on. Medium mouthfeel.
Overall-a unique beer, but it doesn't entirely come together for me, worth a try though.

Draught at the brewery beer hall. Served too cold, in the appropriate stylish glass. The beer has a beautiful amber colour, served with a moderate head. Fruity aroma with hints of caramel. Some caramel in the flavour too, but not really sweet. Nutty. Tolerably well hopped.

A clear deep amber beer, an off-white head that leaves lacing.
The smell i mostly from the malt, sweet and fruity, prunes and oranges.
The taste is also sweetish, dried dates, plums and apricots. Some bitter orange, and more bitter notes like apricot seeds.
Rather low carbonation, soft and smooth, but with a long dry feeling.
A rather good dark lager, interesting fruit associations.

Bought this while in Prague, reviewing it in Israel, what fun. Most of the beers I had in Prague were great, but those were draft and I picked them specifically. Now it's time to see about the bottles.
An aggressive pour yields a smaller but decent fizzy fluffy almost 1 finger head tat fades at a med pace, some fluffy lacing, crystal clear tan almost auburn colored.
NOse isn't too bad, nice straw and toasty pilsner malts, little husky grain, but a little corn husk like aroma too, a little syrupy corn syrup like when I nose deep, and very faint skunked lager aroma, not much for lager though, but it does give me that sense of some of the Euro Dark Lagers that come to U.S. like too large production and not enough care spent in making it.
Taste sweet syrupy flavors right off, a bit of a molasses like, with more cola syrup and a little bit of that earthy root like taste. The candy syrup overpowers the very light toasty pilsner malts, but not the husky grainy flavor. It also somehow brings a little fusel alcohol flavor despite only being 4.8%. Some bitterness in there, bit of grassy hop but not a lot. FInish is more of that fermented cola syrup flavor, syrupy sticky, hint of skunked lager again, light husk, and bit more grassy bitterness.
Mouth is med bodied, syrupy, nice carb though.
Overall not nearly as good as most of the beers I had while in Prague. THis tasted more macro like, not a lot of care in the lagering, syrup adjuncts added which brought fake syrup tastes, fusel alcohol flavors despite the low abv, and the green bottle added a hint of skunk. I hope the other bottles aren't as poor as this or I'll be very disappointed.

Real read beer. In Czech Republic it belongs to 'half-dark' type, embracing very different brews.
This is broadly a Vienna Lager - red, with modest head and medium level of carbonation.
Aroma is malty. Start malty too, with strong candy notes but not sweet in any way. Body firm, on the drier side. Finish hoppy, acidic and a bit tart. Aftertaste bitter with a strong malty note.
Interesting beer, not only worth a try but sincerely recommended.

500 ml bottle in Prague
Pours dark amber, aroma is light caramel malt, a bit sourish.
Taste is malty with tangy bitterness and hints of dried fruit, it seems slightly astringent. Mouthfeel is smooth with moderate carbonation.
Drinkable and pleasant poltmavy beer (as an European I am slightly irritated that there is very detailed classification of American beers on BA.com, but clearly distinct Czech brews are simply assigned very broad "European" styles). As much as I have some reservations against Staropramen brewery, I can not deny it is a well made beer.

The colour is pale amber; the off-white head is finger thick.
The smell is somewhat sourish and a bit burned with notes of dark rye bread, coffee with cream, and some fruity hops.
The carbonation is the usual for a dark lager.
A fruity malty note dominates the taste. Then, a growing bitterness emerges with notes of watermelon and some roasted notes. The aftertaste got metallic bitter notes and some boiled vegetables.
Overall, a Czech pils with some roasted notes. Not very exciting.
