This is one of our favorite Staropramen beers because of the rich coffee flavor contained within, all wrapped in a creamy delivery. The coffee flavor within definitely has various levels of complexity rather than just the one flavor some other coffee stouts contain. Each sip keeps on giving for some time after.

Out of the many tasty Czech beers this one always keeps us looking forward to a trip to Prague, definitely recommend a taste of it at the Staropramen brewery.

Thick beige head. The lace is too slippery to leave lace on the glass. The liquid is dark brown where a minimal amount of light shines through.

The aroma is mocha and mild.

Think modestly bodied stout. The aftertaste does have some pleasant hop bitterness balanced with espresso, which is the flavor that is prevalent from the start of the sip. The body is very smooth with a consistency of skim milk.

A great change of pace in the Czech Republic. If you get sick of the wonderful pilsners, here's a beer that'll make you think of Ireland.

Pours out very dark and thick, although the head is light and long lasting. The nose was really nothing to write home about, very slight coffee notes and maybe a touch of caramel. Kelt stands up as a reasonable substitute to Guinness, although the body is distinctly watery in comparison and there is a lack of the dry bitterness which I would expect from a real irish stout. Kelt then stands up to Guinness because it is an industrial stout that is neither offensive nor memorable.

I had this beer at a random bar in Prague, Czech Republic. The brewers place great importance on where the beer is served, so the restaurants/bars that I saw this brew were slightly upscale but not pricey at all considering what I paid in US dollars for it. Was served on tap, and was slightly more refreshing than the bottled version I had the previous night. If you find yourself with an opportunity to enjoy this beer from the tap I would strongly recommend it. Now on with the review.

A: Served in a typical pint glass with the attractive golden Kelt artwork on the side. Beer is dark brown with hints of dark red peeking through the shadows. Sports a Guinness like cascading under the head, which is a beautiful tan color. I sat and watched the cascading before I remembered that I was supposed to be drinking it and not admiring it. The head is at about ¾ of an inch with the cascading reaching much deeper. After quite some time the foam dissipates, leaving behind very fine lacing.

S: Nothing too powerful here, most obvious smells are of espresso and chocolate, with caramel lying underneath.

T: Just like the smell the espresso introduces itself warmly with the chocolate following. The caramel never really shows up but may be paired with the chocolate flavoring. The smoothness is remarkable with little bitterness but enough to notice. Creamy flavors can also be found floating throughout but not in abundance.

M: Smooth and soft. Not too heavy and not too light, a nice balance in weight of the beer. Creamy smoothness to accompany the enjoyable flavoring.

D: The fact that this beer is not too heavy and sports outstanding flavor leads to the assumption that I could have had many of these had I not been trying to experience all that Prague had to offer.

Overall I will be looking for this beer to come to the States in abundance, but I will most likely have to make a return visit to the Czech Republic to have another (the things I do in the pursuit of good beer)

Also sampled on tap at Potrefena Husa in Plzen, a 0.5l glass for 31KC (about $1.70) on 30Sep07.

'Twas a beautiful pour; quite a sight! Has the lovely cascading effect of a Guinness, with a dark, dark brown liquid with mahogany highlights. Head is tan and oh-so-creamy, sitting at a steady 1/2", leaving super lacing. Nose is lightly roasty though muted. The bier is creamy, velvety smooth on the tongue, but decidedly on the thinner side of medium. Bit of a letdown, there.

Flavor is replete with roasty, bitter choco notes right off the bat, with a subtle sweetness lingering about. The light body makes it an easy quaffer, but a lack of complexity is another letdown. Some floral hops come into play near the finish. Flavor, like the appearance, is Guinness-like, which means, to me, that it is lacking.

Prosit!

Tasted a half litre of this in the Czech Inn, Dublin, Ireland in early September 2007.
Served in a Kozel oversized half litre glass that allowed an oversized nitro head. Looked pretty decent; very dark, almost black body with cream coloured head. Not much to smell because of the nitro head. The taste has to be compared to Guinness (it's Dublin, after all) and it comes out well. It seems like a cross between an Irish dry stout and a sweet stout. It has a not too complex taste of coffee with a sweet finish. It also had good lacing on the glass, unusual for a nitro offering. It's a decent beer.

I don't taste the milk, but a wonderfully roasted barley beer. Aroma is outstanding, abnd a beautifully creramy head on black opaque. Lots of lace. Easy mouthfull, not creamy as advertised. Coffee taste, it's barley. Give me lots of these. Thanks for returning with this Georgina.

Found in a Moscow grocery store, the brown half liter bottle features a long thin neck and a brown and gold label depicts what looks like a dragon coiled behind the "e" in the name. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 11/6/06, I opened it on 6/9/06.

Pours a very bubbly but otherwise clear dark brown under a one finger light brown head that lasts forever and generates beautiful sheets of lace. A strong surge of sweet caramel and roasted nut greets the nose - very enticing. The mouth is lightly carbonated and fairly light. Very nice sweet caramel and strong smokey dry bitterness in the taste right from the start. The bitterness grows quickly to dominance, and stays there. It is dry and crisp, almost acrid, with espresso tones adn some underlying smokiness. This was a very pleasant surprise and a quite drinkable brew.

Website: www.kelt.cz . 500 ml bottle, bought in Prague. Irish style dry stout. Black (=very dark brown to ruby) colour. Moderate creamy tan head. Moderate roasty aroma, notes of coffee, faint hints of leather. Smooth drinking, but there’s a pronounced bitter roastiness. Strong coffee notes. Little complexity besides the roastiness, but not nearly as bad as some other ratings made me expect.

This sample was brought to me by my brother John. Many thanks big guy.

Aroma is a fairly light dark roast quality with slight roast and sweet fruit notes.
Pours mostly black and when held in the light has a dark reddish/brown hues. Head is slow to form, but in time it does show a firm 1/4 inch head that eventually will show lots of lacing.
Flavor is light in its presentation. Shows light roast with a soft fruitiness. Mild bitterness that reminds one of coffee (without it actually being coffee flavor). Bitterness stays in a long finish.
Here is the greatest weakness in that it's rather thin, however it does possess decent softness.
Overall this is adequate at best. Drinkable, but there are so many others better czech beers that this should be tried for the curiosity and novelty only.

UNREAL beer here.. Looks alot like Guiness but tastes better.. This is a peculiar Czech beer, because it's labeled as a Stout, yet it's more like a thin fizzy porter or a thick schwarzbier. This curiosity doesn't end there - it's damn sweet. It has a really roasty and mildly bitter taste and has the coffee-ish flavors of the Guiness we all know and love.. Well worth a try..
