Best before 03 2009:

Pours straw yellow with a creamy white head that has a decent retention. Some traces of lacing stick.

The smell is of "Euro skunk" with grassy, metallic notes. Some lime.

The taste is of lime zest with herbal/grassy notes giving a bitter touch. There is a sweet malt backbone. It has a crisp finish.

Not really a "bock", unless it just means a strong lager. It has a bit of a kick, and a noticeable hop presence. Easy drinking as a refresher with a bit to it. Nothing great, but something of a pleasant refresher with a bit of a mild kick. More than the typical macro, overall, IMO.

A nice golden pour with a decent head. Looks half decent but not unlike most any other lager around.

The nose is mild, bordering on dull. Very light and natural straw hints. Not much in the way of hops but there is a pinch of malt hiding in there somewhere.

The taste is typically lager-like although i will say there are subtle malt undertones that don't go unnoticed. A little grainy and sweet on the finish.

An unadventerous offering. I could pass on this and not miss it next time around. Pretty generic for the most part. On the flip side, it's quite refreshing on a warm May day liek today.

I have only one word to describe this beer. There is simply one word that will do. I tried to think of two words or maybe even three but I was trapped at one. That word, that one word that I shall use to describe this less than exciting offering from Portugal is not a long word, nor a short one. It’s a medium length word. It is…Budweiser.

Presentation: Short 11.2oz brown bottle, with freshness stamp.

Appearance: Bright pale yellow in colour with a thin white lace head. Carbonation is moderate.

Smell: Dry grain, light fruit esters and a floral aroma way in the back of the nose.

Taste: Crisp and refreshing up-front with a lemony hop flavour and semi-salty sharp rind-like bitterness. Carbonation aids in providing a creamy feel. Malt sweetness is even, dextriny, not overpowering and creates a full-bodied brew. The palate then dries up with grain tannins. Sweet alcohol and light hop floral flavours in the finish.

Notes: 5.8%abv. Super Bock is more of a malt liquor vs. a bock of any type, and it rivals nearly all of the malt liquors that I've tried. Very refreshing, with a nice alcohol kick to match.

12.5 oz brown bottle with “Best Before End” date printed on the label.

Appearance: Pale golden straw colour, perfect clarity with a decent amount of white lace that lessens to a ring.

Smell: Grainy with a lemony undertone and faint cooked veggies.

Taste: Grainy without a doubt, ghost like acrid flavour perhaps from that carbonation and fermentation by-products. Faint citric and grape tones hit in the middle with a lightly warming alcohol. Hops are bitter indeed though do not reach the point of being unbalanced.

Mouthfeel: Sufficient crispness with a sturdy medium body, dextrins in the mouth give it a slight creamy slickness.

Drinkability & Notes: For what it is priced for ($6-7 a six pack) it is not worth it just for flavour sake. Worth a try in my book yet I was not surprised to end up with a mediocre beer.

Not much flavour in this one, and kind of sweetish (probably from the slightly higher alcohol level), really boring beer and at times a bit artificial in its taste.

330ml bottle. I seem to remember seeing this featured on Three Sheets a few years ago or so.

This beer pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, with one chubby finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which exhibits a modicum of retention, eventually leaving a low wash of dripping painted lace around the glass.

It smells of bready, crackery pale malt, grainy corn, some citrus wood polisher, a touch of grassy hops, and a subtle, slowly fading weedy skunkiness. The taste is more blended malt - grainy, and somewhat doughy, with the corn element retracting a bit, in favour of a somewhat acrid, and unexpected warming alcohol, a touch of sulphur, and softened earthy skank where one might actually be anticipating some mild noble hops, at the very least.

The carbonation is average, just a wan frothiness throughout, the body a decent medium weight, perhaps a tad cloying, but mostly smooth. It finishes grainy and still a tad boozy, the trace amount of stink in the process of wafting away.

Well, there are bock elements here, but cheaply rendered ones at that, so I can understand the confusion in style descriptors surrounding this beer. Not as bad as the initial whiff would indicate, but still too hot for the proclaimed ABV. Nothing worth revisiting, unless you're a hedonistic TV show, and they're giving it to you for free.

A passable beer, certainly not a bock, more of a pils. Decent foam in pour, and reddish tinge to yellow. Can taste alcohol, though some (saaz) hops and sweet malt to get it down. Watery, thin-medium mouthfeel. Spot of sour dry aftertaste. Thanks Pootz.

pours a deep straw with snow white head that is very active and laces very intricately...settles fairly fast with nice wispy lacing remnants still clinging.

nose is the expected 'cerveza' smell, but not as offensive...a bit sweet but a hint of depth in the grainy-malty spectrum. not sure if corn is in the mix, but i sense it.

ok. interesting. the sweetness is but a trace on the tongue. nothing 'special' but actually very refreshing for its slightly bitter (= 'not sweet') profile. carbonation is actually lower than i expected allowing this to come across creamier and still firmly on this side of 'crispness'...quite drinkable. memorable for being one of the better brews from the world of forgettable brews...nothing to shout out about, but really good for being, i guess, better than expected and not offensive or boring.

One of the best-selling beers in Portugal; the Super Bock pours a straw gold body with a bright-white head that unfortunately drops shortly. It keeps a thin collar but leaves next to no lace. The aroma displays a mild fruitiness, grainy malt, and mild herbal hops. The medium body and fine carbonation give it a gentle crispness in the mouth that warms to become creamy and smooth. The flavor is well-balanced between firm, sweet & grainy malt, and a supportive bitterness. Some herbal and grassy hop flavor adds to the character. It finishes dry with a lingering hop flavor that's a refreshing change from many "European-style" lagers. Enjoyable, but not really memorable.

Half finger of head on a clear, pale straw colored body.
I can barely stand the aroma. It's a mixture of dirty barnyard and grain.
The taste isn't as offensive, it just tastes like water with the slight bit of bitterness.
Fizzy texture, moderate carbonation and light body.
It's one of the less enjoyable beers I've had. The smell is a real put-off.

Went out for Portuguese food last night and asked for the appropriate beer...nothing special here, but also nothing bad. Poured as a lager should. Had a slightly sweet odor, bready and fairly clean. Taste was decent and it went well with the braised veal I had for my meal. It drank easy. For the cultural component, it was worth it.

From July 3rd 2010 notes.

5.4% for me.

Tried this in may 2008 at Barroso on Ontario street and enjoyed it a lot. Haven't had it since.

A- Clear gold with a bit of light, white head.

S- Soft malt. Hard to pick up anything else. Rice maybe. Some bastard noble hop smell.

T- Quite boring. A superior Budweiser. Less offensive but still something artificial in it. This is pretty sweet and tastes a bit like unhopped wort.

M- Crisp and dry. Medium to high carbonation. Feels pretty full.

D- Good. Are Molson and Coors drinkable? This is a couple notches more.
