My last remaining beer I brought home from my holiday in Portugal earlier this year: 33cl well in date, poured @ home into a 'Gordons Gold' thistle shaped glass.

Looked very impressive: but any dark brew looks good in the glass I choose to use. Huge foaming head of tan coloured bubbles sat on top of the dark brown/ruby body.

The nose and taste both have hints of chocolate and coffee: nothing strong or 'super' about the flavours, but they are there if you sniff and sip deeply enough.

Not sure it would muster as a Stout here in the UK, more a black lager really in body depth and feel. It's just about OK, I tried it while on holiday and obviously thought it good enough to fly home with me, so it must have something about it, I just can't find whatever that something is anymore!

Notes from 8/20/10; no freshness date

Pitch black pour, with tons of carbonation (at least 3 fingers of head without an aggressive pour).

Not getting much;out of the smell. Some faint sweet and roasted malts.

Has some of the earthy notes I like from a stout, along with a slight sourness that is really unappealing. I don't think it's infected, just some sour notes.

A bit too much carbonation for my liking; also, feels pretty thin (like all of their beers).

The sourness and high carbonation take away from drinkability. Just not much going for it.

S: cherry, sweet red fruit porter, but also chocolately coffee.
T: mild roastedness, slightly bitter. milk chocolate.

O: Decent flavor. Surprisingly okay.

The cost-benefit ratio should be better there in Portugal (of course) than here, particularly because I think our Caracu less watery, although the aftertaste of Super Bock Stout is interesting. Has a certain sweetness (Stout?!).

330ml bottle. Lager glass. Bright brown color, reddish tints to the light & chill haze appearance. Tan froth & quickly dissipated creamy crown. Butiric & cardboard odors followed by caramel, toasted, slight floral & coffee notes. Husky & roasted upfront rounded by dried malt bitterness. Light to medium body. Moderate to moderate high carbonation. Oily to watery texture. Slight metallic hues & low hoppiness linger into a dry bitter finish.

A: Dark brown with a ruby tinge when held to the light, lots of Coke like carbonation, a finger of deep brown almost ash tinged head.

S: Coffee, metallic, very light and somewhat watery.

T: Metallic, dark roasted malt note, liquorice finnish but all are very light and watered down. Hint of alcohol on the finnish.

M: Light watery body, heavily carbonated.

O: Cool bottle and name. I'm new to Portuguese beers looked pretty cool and gave the illusion of a ‘bock’ a style which I normally like. Disappointed in that it was very watery and had a metallic taste, even a downer for a Euro Dark Lager. Will go well with my steak though.

Super Bock stout, 5%abv, 0.33cl bottle

A Dark, but deep ruby red when held to the light. Nice thick head that really lasted.4

S Chocolatey roasted malt aroma, no hint of hops. 3

T A little sweet, but not too much. Not as roasty as I was expecting, but clean and smooth. Some licorice/anise flavor, non-detectable hop presence. There is a dried fruit flavor at the finish and a little metallic. 3.5

M Medium to full body, feels thick on the tongue. Carbonation is good. 3.5

D Drinkable, but the sweetness/fruit/anise is a bit much for me to want another. 3

A - Blackish in colour with lots of fizzy tan head and no visible carbonation.
S - Sweet and malty, but rather light smell, not strong.
T - Sweet and light at first, mostly tastes of roasted malt and chocolate. It becomes stronger and dryer in the aftertaste, but never really tastes very strong.
M - Very watery, light bodied and even undercarbonated. Like a flat cola.
D - Decent enough I suppose, it's weak enough to not put you off.

This was my first foray beyond golden lagers in Portugal and I was only mildly impressed. The beer was a nice dark brown color with tan head that went quickly but left nice lacing. It smelled decent, but couldn't make out much beyond very light coffee and caramel tones. Taste was about the same, left me with a smooth mouthfeel. Decent carbonation. Pretty drinkable actually. Had I not found Sagres Preta in Sagres after the one day in Lisbon, I probably would have drank more of this. Thumbs up!
