This one is hard to find, but whenever I see it I always order at least one. It is a dark, brown with a slight shades of amber if you hold it in front of a light. Has a tan head that lasts throughout the drink and leaves good signs of lacing. A roasted, malty aroma that I really enjoyed. Tastes of rich, chocolate, roasted malt and slight hop bitterness. For a stout has a really light mouthfeel and big time drinkability. 4.5's all around! One of my favorite brews by RJR, I wish I could get it more often.

On tap at Delaney's Irish Pub a block or two away from the brewery.  Served in a traditional shaker glass.

A: Arrived very dark with brown/amber highlights when held to the dim light at the bar.  No head but there were a few patches that lingered, along with a thin khaki colored ring.  Very little lacing.

S: Roasted barley, rich coffee, chocolate malt, and a hearty dose of hops for the style.

T: Sweeter up front with a good bit of chocolate and a touch of dark fruit.  Transitions to a roasted and coffee flavor that lingers the rest of the way, and is met by a nice hoppiness at the finish.  Alcohol was completely hidden.

M: Heavier side of medium-bodied with a pretty low level of carbonation.  Smooth and slightly creamy, but would like to have seen the carbonation level increased just a little to give it a bit more smoothness.  Slightly bitter for much of each sip, and a little drying.

D: Nothing stood out here, but it was a very tasty and easy to drink stout.  I loved the toned-down sweetness and the hops melded very well with the overall bitter flavors of roasted barley and coffee beans.  Went down very easy, and I had no problem ordering and finishing a second pint.  I'm from Sparkle City but surprisingly this was my first experience with this beer.  I look forward to being back and grabbing another couple pints at good 'ole Pint Night.

Served from tap into a standard RJ Rockers pint. Sat down to one of these after work at The Taproom (RJ Rockers Taproom). The appearance of this one was a dark brown almost black with a low rising tan head. The aroma had a hint of coffee with some underlying caramel. The taste was suprisingly smooth for a stout, but had a nice subtle hint of coffee and chocolate. Lacing was observed throughout. Overall this was much nicer than I thought it would be. the nice partially sweet aspect was nice and made it quite easy to drink. Glad I got the chance to sample this one.

I have managed to enjoy this one on several occasions over the last couple of years. This most recent voyage through was out to dinner with my wife. Served cold and pour into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 05/22/2009.

The pour was nice, deep dark brown with hardly an glimmer of light shining through. A nice tight head of tan came up and over the top, only gradually settling down and leaving some decent lacing up and down the sides of the glass. Nice touches of caramel, roasted malts and a touch of molasses in the aroma. As it warms I start to note a decent touch of tobacco as well, nicely done, this was nicer then the last time I remember it. Smooth, even flavor here from beginning to end with a nice dry finish that tickled the tongue with a nice amount of sweetness.

Overall a very solid dry stout I have to say. I was impressed with the direction that they have taken this beer and will definetly be looking to grab one again.

This is a picture-perfect dry stout. I am exceedingly impressed.

Appearance: beautifully black, opaque except under direct back-light. The head is a pleasant mocha color.

Aroma: coffee-like roasted aroma dominates, with no hops in the nose. There is a faint ester lingering back there in the background, but I can't place it exactly. Possibly iso-amyl acetate, but whatever it is, it's at a very low concentration and melds nicely with the roasted aromatics.

Flavor: complex. roasted flavors are up front, matched equally with chocolate. no hoppy distractions. there is no diacetyl, but there is a curious lingering flavor that follows the chocolate -- blueberries? very, very subtle, but very nice. i think i'll have another sip.

mouthfeel: creamy, full-bodied. carbonation level is just right. medium gravity for the style. not much astringency from the roasted grains. overall very pleasant.

drinkability: the dry stout is among my favorite styles when produced properly (but alas, remains behind the Belgian abdij and its ilk), and this one is definitely produced properly! excellent work. find it and drink it!

Tasted with the Charlotte Beer Club
Pours a dark Red, not very black. Mocha head.
Smells like bitter sweet chocolate, burnt cocoa and coffee. Very slight hop nose.
Taste is smoky, chocolaty, and coffee. Good sweet taste but smoky and hoppy enough to give a little edge on the beer. Taste like a great example of a well bodied stout. Good roasty, chocolate, coffee, and smoky a great balance.
Smooth and the taste definitely lives up to the name but the appearance definitely is unique.

Tried this one on tap at Terry's Tap Room in Spartanburg, SC. As far as I know this is a "draft only" offering by RJR. Pours a dark, deep brown with 1/2 off-white head that lasts 'till the end. Smells of roasted, chocolately malt and slight hint of hops. Tastes...wonderful! Starts off sweet and finishes with a smooth, chocolately, yet slightly hoppy lingering. The carbonation is just right...not too smooth like I've found other stouts to be. This one isn't as thick as most stouts I've had in the past either which makes it that much more applealing to me! I could drink at least two of these which isn't bad considering I weigh just over 100 lbs! RJR is quickly becoming a must-have whenever I'm out for the night!

Big thanks go to casemw for the opportunity to try this beer. case filled a bottle off tap and sent it to me, with a hand written label. Wow! A vigorus pour into my 22oz tulip produced a dark fluid with a finger of beige head, that did not last to long. I get a hoppy, roasty fresh smell. This is more like a dark cola than a stout. Light mouthfeel with a light roasty almost cola flavor. If someone handed me this beer blind, I would have thought it was a porter. All in all very drinkable, but a little light in flavor for an American stout?

Thanks a bunch for this growler, Mikesgroove.

Pours into a RJ Rockers pint glass.

A: Pours a nice black with bits of brown when backlight. Short head forms and falls within a minute. Some patchy lacing.

S: Deep roasted and partially burnt malts. Heavily roasted coffee beans and some earthy hop bitterness. A touch of sweetness with some chocolate.

T/M: Roasted grains and spent coffee beans. Bitterness is a tad high and brings a slightly chalky feeling. Some sweetness comes in on the back and and enhances to a milky cocoa sweetness with some residual roasted grain left. Body is medium heavy but carbonation is a bit too low to make this creamy and smooth.

D: Not a bad tasting stout and I'll probably finish the whole growler in this sitting(enjoying more of Harry Potter at the moment... yes, I'm a loser, lol). Mouthfeel leaves much to be desired, though.

Had this one at the Charlotte Oktoberfest, but it was listed as "star Spangled Stout." If I need to delete this and add a new beer, let me know. An above average, but nothing spectacular about this stout. Black, thick, with caramel and chocolate hints. Interested more, though, in trying some of R.J.'s other brews.

This beer poured a nice deep black with a little head. The smell was of coffee and malt. The taste was very malty with a good aftertaste of oatmeal. The mouthfeel was smooth with a slight touch of bitterness in the aftertaste. A beer I would not mind trying again.

Pitch black thin head with ample lacing.

Roasted coffee with peanut butter and some light hops. Very enjoyable scent.

Peanut butter with roasted malt and very light hops.

Very smooth and rich. Super sweet taste left ont he palate.

I could drink this beer almost every day. Try it if you get a chance. I had this one at Barley's Taproom in Greenville.
