It appears more appropriate to consider this an American Wheat Beer than a hefeweizen. I'll review it as such.

Appearance: nice deep amber color, slightly hazed (which is appropriate given the style). Head was robust and a beautiful white color; left Belgian lace on the glass.

Smell: clean typical American yeast aroma (no clove esters typical of the German hefeweizen, and no diacetyl); slight noble hop-type aroma.

Flavor: very clean and crisp, with a pronounced combination of the yeast characteristics and the buckwheat -- a nice twist on regular wheat. Background citrusy/noble hop flavor, but it's subdued. No phenols or diacetyl in the flavor. IBU's seem to be within the 15 to 30 range.

Mouthfeel: light bodied, high in carbonation. Spot on for the style.

Overall impression: great effort here. Delicious, refreshing, and a great example of what an American wheat beer is. Bravo and hats off to the brewer on this one.

Poured into a weizen glass. Thanks to thagr81us for this.

4.0 A: This is the third RJR brew I've had recently and surprisingly this (a wheat ale) has the least amount of carbonation. Hazy yellow-orange color. Two and a half fingers of frothy white head. Average retention and moderate lacing.

3.5 S: Neutral wheat with musky cellar funkiness. Not really anything else going on, but not too bad.

3.0 T: Low in flavor. The strongest flavor is a mild hop bitterness. Neutral wheat, musty funkiness again, and yeasty. Not really any spiciness.

2.5 M: Lighter body. Carbonation is high, but within the style. Not creamy at all like a good wheat and leaves a chalky aftertaste.

2.5 D: I'm not a big fan of this brewery. Nothing really good about this brew.

Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this one this afternoon. Decided to head down to the tap room round four oclock to see what was going on, ended up trying this one out, and I have to admit I was impressed. Consumed on 07/01/2010.

Really nice pour here with a medium/dark amber that was very, very clear and clean. Small head on top of off white kept to a nice and manageable fingers height.

Aroma was deep citrus, nice bready notes building in as it went on, but in the front a nice and bright lemon and orange nose that really pulled through on the flavor. Crisp, clean, an really just amazingly refreshing. This beer is totally different on tap than out of a bottle. This turned into an amazing clean and very hoppy wheat beer that that on this first day of July is just amazingly perfectly placed.

Maybe it was me or the situation but this one really just grabbed a hold of me. One of the nicest, cleanest and hoppiest wheat beers I have had. Would do this one again in a heartbeat.

Served from bottle into a Samuel Smith Euro pint. Pours a yellow-orange with white one-finger head that quickly subsides to a minimal amount. There was no apparent lacing present. The aroma was comprised of only malt and wheat. The flavor was of citrus and wheat. It was light on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this brew kind of lacks robust flavoring to be good. It is not bad however, and would be an awesome lawnmower beer as it is quite smooth and drinkable.

Pours a barely transparent hazy golden yellow with a decent white head. Aroma is wheaty, yeasty and just a little lemony, about average for this style. Mouth filling flavor is crisp and wheaty with a nice undertone of citrus, mainly lemon, a little bit of summer sunshine. Texture is smooth and fairly fizzy.

Pours straight gold with very little head. Very faint carbonation. Does lace well.

Nose is a bit fruity, with peaches, lemons, strawberry, and a bit of spiciness.

Hits very clean but builds quickly to a nice dry hop presence. Finishes fruity with all of the above present. Tart hoppy finish with citrus tones. Very nice and totally unexpected flavor.

Feel starts thin but finishes just right for the flavor.

Very easy to drink. Works well in both cold and hot weather.

Buckwheat Ale-love supporting the local brewery here in Spartanburg SC.
Pours a light/pale amber tone of golden brown, light fluffy head dissapates quickly in my Hefeweizen glass, little to no lacing is left.
On the aromatics, the brew begins to pick up steam. Some musty wheats, light banana/sweetish toffee, some peppery esters, hays, and a light lemony/citurs character that adds pleasently to the mix.
American Wheat Ales are not usually my favorite by far, but this is one of the strongest examples that I have had. Creamy yeasts upfront evolve into a nicely tart finish. Musty clove, candied citrus, musty hay, all in the mix. Nicely balanced.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, light creamy. I would pair this with peppery shrimp, scallops, or maybe even cerviche. Well done, head and shoulders above the Son of A Peach

Appearance: Cloudy Amber with a little white head.

Smell: Banana, light brown sugar.

Taste: Banana with a hint of caramelized onions. Banana's foster at the begining with burnt brown sugar.

Mouthfeel: Great mouthfeel - medium bodied.

Drinkability: Sessionable beer - and a really neat style. They nailed it on the head here.

12oz brown bottle with no freshness date.

Fizzy off white head leaves a ring of lace on the glass. Clear golden straw color. Clean wheat nose with a faint taffy or bubble gum aroma that goes slightly flowery and fruity. Firm crispness within a slightly creamy medium body. Malty sweet with a mild sting from the hop bitterness which does a good job to balance. Finishes semi-dry with a kiss of breadiness in the end.

Good for the style, a pretty narrow and simple style but its drinkable and a no brainer.

Had this on tap at Brick City Grill in Greenville, SC. A really delicious hefe with a nice hazy, golden appearance. This very drinkable beer had an exceptionally pleasant fruity nose to it. Definately no need to add any oranges or lemons to this beer...it's truly perfect the way it is! This beer is definately in my top 5 so I couldn't resist but to review it.

A: Poured from a bottle to a weizen glass. Had a cloudy consistency and a brown color. A surprising (given the style) lack of head, but some OK lacing.

S: There was a wheaty quality to the aroma, but also a slightly acidic aspect to it.

T: The wheat was evident with the taste, but unlike a lot of other hefeweizens this beer had a nutty taste to it, much like a nut brown ale. Strange, but likable.

M: A decent amount of carbonation and a slick finish. Medium-bodied.

D: As I said before, this isn't a typical hefe, but it has an oddly endearing character to it.

This is a great summer wheat beer, and one of RJ Rockers best. This is a bottled beer or you can get it draft style at some local bars/restaurants. Buckwheat is a nice milder wheat beer and not as filling as some others. It is best served with a slice of orange.

it's a light hefe.

end of story.

smells decent, typical hefe qualities.
tastes like a bowl of non-sugared cream of wheat.
physically voluptuous on the palate.
you could drink this for days if you have no taste buds.

this wheater has a musky note. that's about all as far as character.
but damned drinkable. throw in a dip or light up a cigarette and you can drink this beer all night.

otherwise, this beer is nonsense. the brewery is just trying to fill the style catalog to maintain a micro brewery stature.

trust me on this one. BS!

Appearance: Pours a hazy, orange-gold body with a thin, white head.

Smell: Sweet-smelling, malty nose with rather mild notes of fruit and spice.

Taste: Notably sweetish maltiness with a bready, almost cakey quality to it. Distant, faroff note of field grains. Hint of clove. A drop or two of tangerine oil. Very faint spicy hops with an equally light touch of bitterness. Drying finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Drinkability: While not the most authentic hefeweizen I've come across, it's still a generally pleasant, refreshing beer.
