This is an interesting beer that seems to change as you drink it. The color is a very cloudy tannish-orange. The head is almost non-existent. The first aroma that hits you immediately is a freshly baked pumpkin pie. After a few minutes, the aroma goes quite weak, but lingers ever so slightly. The first taste is of pumkin pie, then as you drink, spices emerge an then lastly a slightly bitter ending. Overall, a decent beer and one that goes through a lot of changes as it is consumed.

Pours a cloudy orange color in a 16oz pub glass with a most impressive head. I had to let it dissipate a couple of times before I could finish pouring the beer into the glass.

Smell is pumpkin, fruity, malty, with a faint smell of pumpkin pie spice.

Taste the pumpkin pie spice right away that gives way to a bitter, dry finish with a faint pumpkin aftertaste.

Mouth feel is velvety smooth.

I like it and would be willing to give it another try especially in the fall of the year. It would be a great beer to drink watching college football on Saturday afternoons.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a rich golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of pumpkin pie, pretty tasty. Taste is spices up front, and more spices. Very little pumpkin. Kind of an unusual after taste as well. Not terrible, but not good. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall this is an ok beer, but nothing special.

Happy Thanksgivukkah to everyone! I am down to just five more pumpkin beers to review before I go out of my gourd until next year.

From the bottle: "The Gruntled Pumpkin planted the seed and started a revolution for all of pumpkin-kind. To guard the promising vines of the future that would eventually blossom to become the bottom of the barrel (and that's a good thing) of this new pumpkin ale."

Out of a misguided sense of curiosity about the back story on the label of this one, I went with a slower pour than usual. This resulted in two fingers of rocky, tawny head that slowly fell, leaving some nice lacing in its wake. Color was a hazy orangish-amber (SRM = > 13, < 17). Nose had an odd cider-like pungency. Mouthfeel was slightly watery and the taste was very perfume-like. Oof. It tasted like spicy aftershave lotion smells and I was not digging it. Finish was spicy and sweet, but not in the right combination, IMHO. Color me disgruntled with Gruntled.

A: Golden amber, slightly hazy, with a two-finger head of off-white head. Lacing is fairly minimal.

S: Not very strong aromas. There's the usual pie spices, typical for pumpkin ales. I detect bready grain and vegetable (probably pumpkin) aromas as well.

T: Initially it's quite good, with fresh bread and sweet malt early on. The pumpkin is definitely there in the middle, along with some tartness. The spices are more subdued than I'd expected. And in the finish is an almost-harsh bitterness that just doesn't meld well with the rest of the flavors.

M: Crisp with good carbonation. A slight boozy burn, and a touch of dryness in the finish.

O: The pumpkin ale market is getting pretty crowded, and it takes a really good product to stand out. This one is fair, but not good enough to buy again, given the large number of better tasting pumpkin brews to choose from.

Served in a Riedel tulip glass. Pour is dark amber, with very little head, and very little apparent carbonation.

Smell is, as expected, like pumpkin pie. More creamy than spicy - maybe the smell of canned pumpkin is a more apt comparison?

Taste is, again, creamy pumpkin pie. The spices aren't overwhelming like they are in many pumpkin beers, which is refreshing, but does leave a bit to be desired. It's got more of an earthy pumpkin flavor than nutmeg or cinnamon.

Overall, it probably does taste more like actual pumpkin than most pumpkin beers do, but it's not really that great. However, I did really enjoy the mouthfeel - I feel like many pumpkin beers can come across too thin, but this one was nicely thick, without being too much.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy orange with a finger of fluffy white head from a 12 oz. bottle into an imperial pint glass, the head fades to a solid lace.

Smell: Lots of spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and definitely some pumpkin. Smells like a pumpkin ale should.

Taste: Hmm, interesting. Spice up front with strong allspice, not much pumpkin here. Get some vegetal hops that don't seem to fit, and even possibly a bit of fruit (apple or pear?). Uninviting finish with a bit of onion, almost like an old IPA.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Not exactly easy drinking with all of the off flavors - I didn't finish my glass.

Overall: A huge let down of a pumpkin ale. It is by no means my favorite style, but it is one I enjoy. This was just not balanced and had some flavors that didn't fit.
