English Brown Ale |  5.60% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A traditional English-style brown ale, but with more body. Its deep brown color comes from a combination of Chocolate and Black malts. Tall, dark and smooth – the perfect cure for the domestic beer blahs.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours reddish brown, tons of head, had to wait and pour this in three sessions to get all the beer out of the bottle. thick khaki colored head, lots of bubbles, thick lacing.
S - Aroma isnt too good here, you get some toasted nuttiness to it, and a little herbal scent, maybe the hops? But there's also a tad bit of spice, I can detect a little bit of cinnamon, maybe some honey or maple, but very faint, smells sweet.
T - Taste is very sweet at first as it would seem, then backs off. There's definitely some dark fruit in here, a little plum, then you get some pecan flavor, and more of that cinnamon. It gets a little floury in the end, with a touch of floral hop bitterness which is nice.
M - Still it has a good refreshing quality to it, but its a little on the drier side, even a little watery.
O - Not a bad brown by any means, just missing the mark. To me brown ales are best in fall, and it kinda makes you feel the season if you get me. But this one has off center traits that pull it away from being great.

On tap at Pi Pizza. Served in a pint glass.

A decent beer for my pizza meal, but not one that I will keep around for some serious beer tasting enjoyment. Better than Avery Elle's Brown but not by much.

A – Poured a clear dark reddish brown, with a rocky beige one-finger head (always difficult to judge the head when you get a bar pour). Very good lacing.

S – A malty roastiness with a bit of floral hoppiness.

T - Roasted flavors with some malty sweetness. Maybe even some nuttiness but no bitterness associated with the roasted flavors found in a stout for example.

MF - Medium light bodied. Thin with a bit of creaminess (seems contradictory, I know).

12 ounce bottle -> Dogfish Head Glass

A -Pours up with a huge unrelenting tower of khaki-colored foam which eventually recedes leaving good retention and pretty good lacing. Color is medium brown.

S - Roasted nuts and chocolate dominate.

T - fairly mild flavor as expected with notes of chocolate and a mild charcoal finish.

M- lots of carbonation, but fairly thin.

O - the foam is a deal breaker for me. Everything else is fine but I don't like having to wait ten minutes to finish filling a glasss.

A- Pours clear and brown with some ruby hue, enormous light tan foamy/creamy/pillowy head that eventually reduces, leaving some lacing behind

S- Lots of nutty notes up front with some dark bread, apple peel with some other fruity esters, a whiff of cocoa powder and some caramel on the back end

T- nice and malty up front with some bready notes, some light chocolate notes kick in mid-palate with some nutty flavors, a bit of apple skin leads to lightly tart near the end with a nice malty backbone lingering on the finish

M- medium body with medium-high carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and a crisp finish

O- This style is known for being uninteresting when it comes to flavor, but this one is quite complex; bready, malty, fruity and nutty. This is a solid session beer and a good change of pace from the typical bland brown ale

Smells like a coffee porter/lager.. Kinda metal choco..

Tastes the same.
Looks nice. Bold flavors are nice. BUT, there's something off-putting here, and it may be the same source as the metallic smell.. Its got an almost limey/metal paulaner hefe finish goin on, and it is a bit odd considering the style.

The initial taste is good. Choco, coffee, toffee, and then a chutes n ladders venture into limey metallic hop land, and I just don't know what to think about it.

I'm good for one or two of these, but after that not so sure.

Again it looks great, but there's something odd, almost soapy goin on here.

Flavorful, but thin and a bit astringent. Rather have a Guinness black lager to b honest.

Not trying to pile-on this brew, its my first RjR review. I like the initial flavor, but the aftertaste is a bit too reddish metal bitter for my liking. A lack of "earthiness".

HUGE head. could hear the release/escape of carbonation as the cap came off. nice looking head, tight and medium weight. typical dark color liquid.
smell is kind of chocolate-y, some malt....
cant taste the darned thing cuz it aint settled STILL. still possesses a beautiful head, though.... creamy.
first taste is very good. I like the carbonation in it. it feels like a coca cola in drinking it. some twang in the flavor; like another said, some 'medicinal' taste to it and a bit of bitter at the end, but I thoroughly enjoy this brew. I gave to give it a 5 on mouthfeel- I don't believe I have ever enjoyed the way it feels in my mouth as much as this one does. I have read the others' reviews and I agree with a lot of what was said- it is light, there is a medicinal taste, etc,,, and I do prefer higher-abv'ed brews, but this one struck me well. it may not be comparable as a traditional nut brown (and my next is Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale for comparison) but I really enjoyed this one. I like something a little different, a little adventurous in experimentation (although not TOO experimental or adventurous) and I am not a fan of the American commercial garbage. this has the qualities of the American commercial garbage in that it is light and easy to drink, but it has a lot of character also.
I gave it a 5 in mouthfeel because I love it.
I gave it a 4.5 in appearance because it was beautiful but I didn't like waiting for it to settle.
smell was average; taste was very decent. I would very much drink this one again....

Appearance - Brown in color with a cream color head.

Smell - All I getting is yeast nothing is standing out.

Taste - Bitter chocolate with smell malt.

Mouthfeel - Heavy carbonation like a coke.

Overall - I like R.J. Rocker other beers but this one I will not be looking to get again.
