12 ounce bottle, I think it's about a year or so old if not older. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch tan head. There's a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like roasted malt, coffee, milk and bittersweet chocolate, and some anise. It tastes like roasted/charred malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, anise, caramel and some light citrusy/piney hops. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. I kept meaning to buy this when fresher, but I guess I just kept passing it by until I noticed it went on sale. I have liked the other Hinterland brews I've tried in the past, and this one is good too. I think this one ages well! Bought on closeout for $5.99 a 4-pack.

Compared to the other imperial stouts this one doesn't quite hold up. It is definitely not a bad beer, but this would not be my first pick.

12 oz bottle poured into a Hinterland tulip.

A - Reflecting the beer's sinister-yet-intriguing label, Lunatic pours inky black, quietly filling the tulip with a dense beer and compact deep mocha head. Loose bubbles form a collar of lace around the glass as the pile of foam lurks away.

S - A colossally robust aroma oozes with heavily roasted malts which impart notes of sticky molasses, large milk chocolate chunks, oatmeal with traces of burnt brown sugar, and a hint of vanilla bean. Lunatic isn't all malt though, in fact it's quite schizophrenic, producing overtones of earthy, pine-suggestive hops that carry subtle notes of citrus on the back end.

T - Some of Lunatic's sweeter, richer aromatic qualities are lost in flavor as this beer becomes roasted and bitter, focusing on dark chocolate, molasses, and maduro tobacco while maintaining a pine-like hop character throughout that trails off with faint hints of grapefruit.

M - This black, robust beer has a viscous body as thick and chewy as it looks with dense malt character smoothly coating the tongue and subtle warming alcohol poking through the bitter finish.

O - Lunatic is a bipolar imperial stout that lures you in with a robust nose that balances roasted malt bitterness with milk chocolate-like sweetness but turns dark and acrid in flavor and feel with molasses and maduro tobacco. Finishing bitter though punctuated by both hops and malt, it's a damn fine imperial stout perfect for sipping and winding down on a cold winter day.

Paid $2.99 for a single. Got it from Vintage Estate.

A - Looks like a great imperial stout deep dark inescapable black with a pretty full inch of dense cocoa head.
S - Smell is rather smokey, rather roasty and rather cocoa like. Smell is sweet with really no sour notes. I taste.
T - Rather smooth with balanced roasts, timid hops, and dark chocolate bitterness. It has a sweet finish with a smooth taste. I am impressed.
M - Medium bodied, rather stick, and not sure the ABV but it tastes amazing,

Overall the ABV is not listed but I can guess somewhat between 7-8%.
I am actually more impressed with this than the bourbon barrel aged stout.

poured 12oz bottle into chalice.

A - Pitch black in the glass. Poured a creamy 2 finger head with aggressive pour. Dissipated into nice thin surface coating and ring. Not much lacing.

S - Big coffee up front. Caramel, roasted malts, raisins, and nice easy booze behind that. Pine and citrus at the very end.

T - Quite sweet up front: overly ripened dark fruits mixed with mild hops, caramel, and coffee notes followed by chocolate and cocoa. Finish is an nice mix of dark roast coffee, pine, and dark fruit sweetness.

M - Medium bodied, but on the thinner side. Slick on the tongue and very drying.

O - Probably one of Hinterlands best beers. This reminded me of GL Blackout. Well done.
