Coffee and bitter chocolate escape as soon as the bottle is opened. Coffee is, indeed, the dominant flavor here. Plenty of bitter chocolate to go with it, as well. The hops kick in at the back end for a little more bitterness.

Not much else to say. Loads of coffee with enough other flavors going on to make it interesting. I'd do this again.

16 oz bottle poured into a Hinterland tulip.
5.6% ABV

A - The pour creates a loosely packed, creamy tan head, which leaves adherent lace above the dark chocolate-colored beer.

S - Luna Coffee Stout opens with an expressive, appetizing aroma of roasted malt, unsweetened dark chocolate, cold-brewed coffee, and molasses for a dense and dark presence.

T - The bold, full aroma suggests this beer to be heavier in flavor and feel, but it drinks quite the contrary. Tons of heavily roasted, black coffee builds in intensity but the dark malt of Luna wins out with overly roasted bitterness, hints of bittersweet chocolate, and a dry cocoa finish that almost tastes singed.

M - Luna's appearance and aroma will trick you into thinking that this beer will be a meal in the glass but it's body is no thicker than a cup of black coffee in the morning. Thin and flimsy, this stout boasts tons of coffee and roasted malt which brings too much acrid bitterness, but little heft to back up the powerful flavor.

O - Hinterland's Luna Coffee Stout makes a good first impression with it's aromatic scent of roasted malt and coffee but it's overuse is too much for such a small, light beer, overwhelming in flavor with little body or sweetness to compensate for the acrid bitterness. What I'd love to see in Luna is less roasted malt and more body-building, sweetness adding specialty maltiness such as caramel - it could add really nice balance and body without adding too much alcohol.

appearance: this one comes in the darkest shade of brown you can get, with a head that actually manages to last for a given amount of time. 4

Smell: This beer smells excellent: lots of heavy, thoroughly roasted coffee. Unfortunately, after this smell subsides, you get hit by hot estery brew, which reminds me of some of my earlier homebrew projects. it averages out to a 3

Taste: This beer comes off VERY dark. think bakers chocolate and dark roasted coffee beans. Very grainy, but enjoyable. If you can drink it that is. The carbonation is just plain offensive. Ive had bottle bombs that where easier to pour than this beer. its so bad, that I have to discount a LOT from taste. It also has a hot flavor behind the roastyness, so after you get used to the coffee, that's all you taste. 2

Mouthfeel: ahhhh the kicker in the room...this beer is viciously over-carbonated. I'm surprised it did not explode in the bottle. It easily has a higher carbonation level than a hefewisen, and has levels close to some of my first homebrew projects (of which DID explode). If it was bottle conditioned I'm SURE that it would had been a gusher (yeast on the bottom tends to catch carbonation bubble, and encourage an overall gusher of beer). Its vicious biting carbonation makes this beer almost undrinkable until a lengthy de-carbonation process (of swirling the beer around and watching huge flumes of beer bubbles rushing to the top of the bottle). The beer is almost unpourable except for the most skilled and careful pourers. 15. Almost a deal breaker.

Overal: This beer is a difficult one. It, at its core, Is a very well made coffee beer. I would actually put it just behind Kona pipeline porter (which still makes it worth trying) in terms of quality, but MY GOD. this stuff is so over-carbianted I'm surprised that the Global warming folks aren't trying to ban it for emmitiing too much CO2! it almost ruins the beer, and its downright sloppy for a professional brewery like this one. I'm giving this bottle the benefit of the doubt, but seriously, it was a huge disappointment to after coming home from work and having to deal with this mess!

A cautiously optimistic 2.75. Their might be a revision of the beer as i go through the rest of the 4-pint pack, and i can accept if my 4 pack was a dud or a mistake. But it cannot be forgiven. It is just simply sloppy brewing.

Id cautiously lump this into the "on Sale" category. Good for a once off try preferably if you can get it not-at-full-price. You might enjoy it at full price or at bar price, but youl be a lot happier if you paid less for it. However, if all batches are as carbonated as this one, Id push it to all the way "bad beer" category and tell ya to skip it.

You have been warned.

Id also lump this one in as being "just for beer geeks". Its too dark and roasty to be used as a gateway beer, and its aggressive carbiantion would not be helpful either...even for a coffee loving beer-geek initiate, I'm not seeing this one working as their first coffee beer.

Appearance: Perfect. Dark mahogany brown with a thick and creamy brown head. Lacing is magnificent. Retention is at 3/8 of an inch for the entire life of the beer. Gorgeous.

Aroma: Sweet coffee liquor, espresso beans, vanilla syrup, cream, subtle sour fruit.

Taste: La Chouffe espresso liquor poured over strong coffee with a hint of cocoa powder, sweetening syrup, and just the slightest dash of a sour, acidic compound.

Mouthfeel: Luscious, creamy, blanketing, soft and comforting. Light carbonation, rich thick body. Fantastic.

Drinkability: Flawless. Sessionable.

One of the best stouts I’ve had from a Wisconsin brewery. Perhaps the best. Compares to Speedway in many ways.

Pours a rich, creamy looking black with a large creamy deep-tan head. Very good lacing, very good legs. Thick wisps on the surface and medium collar. Aroma and taste are of very deep malt, burnt coffee, and dark chocolate. Full body and low carbonation lend to a great thick, rich mouthfeel.

Poured from the bottle.

It poured jet-black and smelled like cold coffee.

It tasted just like carbonated cold coffee. I enjoyed it, but if you do not like black coffee it would not be for you.

Similar to the Flat Earth Black Helicopter.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely.

16oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a darkness snifter. no freshness date.

pours out nearly opaque black with a nice 2 fingers worth of light tan colored head. faded to a thin layer with a thick ring. some nice sticky, webby lace covers a lot of the glass.

some nice deep roasted malt, a little toasted malt, and a nice coffee aroma, definatly not anything espresso like or anything. some dark chocolate comes through as well.

a nice mix of deep roasted malt and slightly sweet toasted malt and some coffee makes an appearence. some nice dark chocolate notes towards the finish with some slightly dry bitterness.

slightly chalky mouthfeel, medium bodied, carbonation about right for the style.

a nicely made stout for sure, but i might not have known this was made with coffee had i tasted it blind. its somewhat hard to determine whether the deep roasted coffee flavors come from the malt or actual coffee. a well made beer nontheless, glad to have tried it.

Pitch black coffee hue with a big frothing tan head forming thick, this beer is pitch black it eats all visible light waves. Head leaves behind even patterned speckled lacing as it dwindles. Aroma dark chocolate, strong espresso dark nearly burnt malts. Black patent malt with some coffee notes. As it warms I get more creamed coffee notes in the nose, than I did initially out of the fridge. Dry roasted malts it's a one note flavor profile with dark nearly burnt old coffee water, the texture is so watery for a stout and the Luna Coffee mentioned on the label is lacking big time hints of dry roasted coffee but nothing like I've tasted in other coffee beers. Mild green fruity character shows up after a few sips even hints of sourdough bread, really a dry roasted malt fest. One pint bottles is pretty nice, a beer out of Green Bay, the Steelers would have won the superbowl if this beer were against any of the dark offerings from East End in the Burgh. Mouthfeel is a bit harsh with astringent dark roasted malts and coffee beans, leaves an unpleasant bitterness on the palate and for a stout this is a dry stout with coffee that is remarkably thin for being a stout. Carbonation is moderate doesn't add or take anything away from the party, this is my second straight coffee beer and I'm wide awake...guess what the coffee infused amber ale I just had sleighed this big brusing pitch black coffee stout from the North.

A- This beer pours a dense opaque black with a thin tan head even with a rigorous pour it is soon gone. There is a slow gentle carbonation.

S- The coffee black malt has dark rich caramel malt support.

T- The big dark coffee blend with black roasted malt that has some nice dry and chalky qualities and a nice roasted malt linger.

M- The light mouthfeel has a big scrubbing fizzy finish that scrubs the tongue and no alcohol heat.

O- The big coffee softer stout flavor with is rich but not much depth and is a bit thin in the body with a nice dry finish.

Luna is black, even to the point that scant brown comes through even at the very edges when held directly to the light. The head seems to struggle to form as first but does, to one finger in height. It doesn't last long but doesn't fade away entirely and does leave legs on my snifter.
The aroma evidences heavy malts, as does the flavor. Roast is the main factor, but raw coffee comes through past the char. A bit of bitter cacao natural to the process is also evident. This is pretty straight up. This one does lend itself to a bit of tang and astringency, though, particularly in the finish.
The feel is light for a stout, no question. It has a nice, abiding smoothness but falls a little flat. The roughness of the astrincency translates to a somewhat harsh dryness in the end.
Not bad, all in all. Smooth it out, balance it, get that astringent element out, and it's great.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A: Pitch black with tinges of the deepest mahogany on the edges. Poured with 1" of a tan head reminiscent of creamed coffee that laced nicely and receded slowly.

S: Solid yet not overpowering aromas of coffee with hints of chocolate.

T: Big coffee taste that disappears into hints of chocolate and roasted malt, with a return of the coffee taste on the finish

M: Smooth and medium-thick with little carbonation.

D: This is a very delicious brew. Probably wouldn't want to have more than two a night simply due to size, and this is definitely not a "I'm gonna tie one on" beer, but on a cold winter night, you can't ask for a cold beer to warm you up more than this one.

a- like a shot of espresso. black, minimal head but present.

s- not a good aroma.

t- surprising. like a gravel road on a rainy day. the simple dark malts compliment a good punch of coffee. nitro helps the flavors blast through.

m- pleasant. the coffee isn't too thick, but does stick around a little bit.

o- our first hinterlands beer. great move to keep it simple. would be a wonderful brunch beer.

Damn near black with just the tiniest glints of cherrywood at the edge. The pale brown head builds nicely, lasts near forever and leaves the glass a mess.
Coffee is big on the nose, as expected. Then it gathers sweeter Kahlua, dark chocolate, and vanilla impressions, along with some background lactic notes. Roasted grain keeps things in check, and prevents it from teetering oversweet.
The roasted beans hit the mouth at the same time as the roasted grains. The coffee is earthy and light, and the grains don't pound you over the head with acrid bitterness either. This mild roasty gentleness fades into milk chocolate (and plain ol' milk), caramel, and a waft of smoke. There is a green-ish, grassy, chlorophyll-rich hoppiness that delivers some late bitterness, without a defined taste element.
The bodied is medium-ish, but sags a bit over the course. This seems to need a slightly sturdier platform to deliver it stoutness in full. It's a minor gripe, but I believe it would push it towards the top of the heap, as it is already rapidly drinkable. I'm not a huge nitro-tap guy, but if anything begs for one, this is it.
It's not so much coffee that traditionalists scoff, nor is it so light that those after some java wonder what happened.
In all, it's a very nice coffee stout.
