Poured into a snifter, this ale pours jet black with a tan head that diminishes to a skim with very nice lacing left all the way down the glass. The aroma is quite malty, dominated by roasted coffee, with noticeable piney hop aroma, inviting. The flavor upfront is roasted, acidic malt bite with piney hop. The beer finishes balanced between dry, acidic malts and pine hop flavor. I think some of the pine character is from the juniper berries, adding to piney hop varietals. The carbonation is medium, as is the body. Overall a delicious beer and nice wrinkle on the winter warmers available, worth picking up.

just picked up on the whole hinterland winterland thing - cute

appearance: served in a great dane imperial pint, very dark mocha body, creamy/foam tan head with adequate lacing left behind

smell: dark roasted malt, pine resin, bakers chocolate, some dark fruits

taste: pretty strong porter here - the juniper berries contribute a fair amount of bitterness. bakers chocolate, dark roasted malts, figs, dark cherries, hints of booze. 3rd straight really impressive beer i've had from hinterland - keep it coming

mouthfeel: full body, bitter finish

drinkability: good

Draft at Hinterland in Milwaukee, served in an oversized snifter.

Black body with chocolate mocha milkshake foam, larger bubbles interspersed in the creamy sticky cap. It laced around the sides, and there was some visible carbonation rising to the edges.

Dark roast and some pine resin, reminding me of Alpha Klaus, and the impending holiday season.

Bitter bakers chocolate, piney hops, dry roast, cacao nibs. A multi-dimensional flavor that is far more interesting and beefed up than your average American Porter. Full bodied, rich at first but dry and satisfying in the finish. Some dried tobacco leaf and juniper berry freshness. Overall very nice, and a beer i'd look for again in the future.

16 oz bottle poured into a Hinterland stange (thanks Mike!). No date or info (Not worried about freshness though as it was just released).

A - A vigorous pour from the bottle reveals the beer to be a clear dark amber. In the glass it's inky black. The short-lived cascading results in a three finger tan head with a subtle rosy hue. The firm foam has phenomenal retention lasting minute after minute and thick, patchy lace. That's a perfect looking porter.

S - Awesome dark chocolate, milk chocolate aroma up front with a roasted malt characteristic that's strong similar to coffee and burnt toast. The juniper berries add a welcoming complexity to the beer. A touch of mintiness, pine, and cherry-like fruit. Inviting and evoking of the holiday spirit.

T - Soft and balanced roasted coffee compliments the chocolate roasted malts so prevalent in this beer. A light spike of slightly minty pine, presumably from the juniper berries adds a good depth beyond the roast.

M - Full-bodied and smooth, Winterland will be a pleasure to sip in the cold winter months. The round, full mouthfeel has a nice bittersweet, dry finish that beacons for another sip.

D - Again, Hinterland's Winterland is a beer with great winter warming qualities that would make it one of my go-to beers this coming winter. Well-balanced and nicely nuanced, it's certainly a tasty treat. And the alcohol isn't present in the lease either, so it really will warm you!

ONE PINT bottle
Served in a tumbler

A - This beer pours dark. No light penetrates the body. It is topped with four inches of mocha head.

S - The aroma is roasted malt and cocoa.

T - The taste is much the same. I get some roasted malt and cocoa. I also notice a burnt flavor. The juniper adds a lingering bitterness.

M - Full

O - It is average. I got this as an extra in a trade. I probably would not buy it.

Poured a dark brown that was slightly translucent. A solid 2 finger head, a bit reddish light brown, lasted about 5 minutes. One of the best pours I have seen for a while. Aroma definitely reminded me of a dark milk chocolate. A bit of sweetness, a bit of bitterness, with some cocoa aromas. A small hint of smoke as it mellowed. Taste was a bit bitter, a small hint of chocolate hiding in the back. A hint of spice, but mostly seemed like a brown wheat bread. Fairly mellow with hints of flavor that poked out. A bit of tingle to the tongue, and a tad watery. Not quite as thick as I normally expect a porter to be. Overall, a reasonable porter. However, seemed to be a strange choice for a winter beer.

Picked up a 12oz single for $2.79. Into a pint glass
A - Can't knock the color deep dark black brown, can't see through it with a 1/4 inch of mocha head that sticks around for a bit.
S - Smells like a decent porter a bit sour probably from the berries. Mostly hops and smokey ash.
T - Slightly bitter some coffee bitterness, and a touch of drying berries/ashy smoke.
M - Pretty smooth mostly medium bodied not very silky. Bitter.

Overall I don't think Juniper berries was a great addition to this porter. Left it very dry, herbal, and somewhat sour. Not bad overall but still not great.

Pour yields a black-bodied beer with a 1.5-finger light mocha head that is quite bubbly and persistent. A bit of lacing as it goes down. The initial whiff brings nice notes of roasted malt and chocolate followed up with a bit of coffee and the slightest hint of juniper-infused spice.

The taste is pretty similar to the nose, though the chocolate comes out ahead of the roast character, the latter of which was more present in the nose. Additionally, the juniper comes forward quite a bit more, which negatively affects the finish, but is a bit too dry and astringent. Maybe a bit too much. Medium body with good carbonation. Overall, pretty good, though I think I would have liked this without any--or at least substantially less--juniper.

16 oz bottle served in a Duvel tulip

A - Black, massive brown head, and excellent lacing

S - Roasted malts, a bit of mint and juniper

T - Piny hops & dark chocolate --> coffee, a little milk, and more pine --> nicely bitter finish with a fair amount of juniper berries

M - Heavier for a porter, which is nice; carbonation is spot on

D - Not bad at all; pretty rich, but I could down a couple of these pretty easily

This was my first Hinterland beer, and I'm impressed. I am a fan of juniper berries, and you probably need to be to fully enjoy it. This is a tasty porter --- I plan to buy it at least once annually, assuming availability.

hinterland winterland. 16oz bottle.

given the lack of reviews, this brewery, which is about 30 miles from my home, must have a pretty limited distribution. i feel privileged to have such ready access to the stuff. heretofore i've avoided it due to 1) ignorance that it might be any good; 2) the big 16 oz. bottle format; 3) lack of freshness dating; and 4) the price (8.99-9.99 for a 4-pack of mostly low abv styles). ah well, finally spotted Winterland for 2.49 a single, so here goes nuthin.

a 4-4.5 completely opaque extremely dark brown. the ecru head is short and short-lived, but a partial cap in the shape of the state of Wisconsin (no joke) and ring hang around, leaving a bit of lace in their wake. actually looks a lot like Old Rasputin (which of course tends to leave a cap looking more like CA) and, as I shall discovery, even smells a bit like it.

s 4.5 big nose of molasses, dried sticky figs, roast underneath. not sure i appreciate the juniper.

t 3-3.5 the roast is more prominent up front than the aroma suggested, and the finish reveals the astringency of all that roasted malt--and both qualities are to my dismay. fortunately, in between there is enough body, sweetness, and with warming, fruityness to partially compensate.

m 4 big bodied for a 7.5% porter. the co2 is of the fine variety but could be a touch creamier.

d 2 this is plainly a porter for backers of big, over the top bitter stouts. that's not me, and it was a struggle to get through half the bottle, but I admire this brew to some extent nonetheless. the second half i mixed with a SN Celebration to make a holiday black and tan, and that helped to get it down the hatch.

Pint sized bottle poured into a nonic. Thanks for the bottle Craig!

(A)- Pours a fairly thick black color. Produced a good tan colored head with decent retention.

(S)- A rich and spicy aroma with raisin and cocoa. The juniper adds an interesting fruit and spice bit to the mix.

(T)- Heavy on the spice/juniper but eventually flows into some mild roasted and raisin bits.

(M)- A good carbonation level. A bit heavy on the spice character I think; overpowers the rest of the beer profile.

(D)- Not bad, but the juniper and spice really overpowers almost the entire profile of the beer which keeps me from really enjoying it thoroughly.

Gotta love a beer that rhymes... It pours a murky black-brown topped by over a finger of bright sienna foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, light pine bark, black currants, light red grapes, brown sugar, light molasses, and a touch of dark chocolate powder. The taste holds notes of roasted malts, brown sugar, wood, juniper berries, and molasses. The berries really come through now as they are, rather than cloaked in some other form, creating an appropriately gin-like character. Unfortunately, this character seems to clash with the base porter, fomenting mildly harsh times on the tongue. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a pretty dry finish. Overall, an okay beer, but the juniper really doesn't help anything, if you ask me. Beyond that, it's pretty good, but it's hard to get beyond the gin-ish-ness.

Dark brown color where only a minimal amount of light passes on the edge. Not quite dark enough to be a stout. Modest head, but it lasts and leaves a blanket of lace.

The smell is flaked semi-sweet chocolate and unsweetened cocoa. No coffee notes. A touch of hop.

Classic American Porter flavor. It has some burnt flavors in the background (from black patent malt?), but otherwise it's the tale of dark chocolate and bittering hop in the swallow. Full bodied with a lighter carbonation level. I do taste some juniper berry in the background as advertised on the bottle, but I wouldn't be able to identify it without the hint. It makes the beer seem dry.

All in all, one of the better porters I've had.
