A 16oz bottle poured into an imperial pint glass. The beer was a dark copper color with a medium-sized tan head. A good amount of lace.

Mostly a citrus aroma, with some sweet malt.

In the taste there was a tiny hint of caramel, followed by biscuit. Overwhelming taste, though, was grapefruit.

A nice hoppy IPA. Fun to drink.

Dark amber-orange with a low-slung stained white head. It retreats towards the surface, but leaves a great deal of lace behind.
Crunchy, brown leaves, crusty bread, old pennies, caramel, toffee, dates, and a peppery grassiness dots the nose. It's not a particularly assertive aroma, and had this not just arrived in stores, I'd question it's age (and I felt the same about Hinterland's Pale Ale).
Into the mouth, it's wetly doughy and semi-sweet with caramel and Fig Newtons. Malt is the driving engine here with toasted and burnt toast breadiness with a splattering of sweeter nuances. A vague, stewed apple and date fruitiness gathers in the middle. It's like an ESB or Old Ale with hops that don't quite jive. They bring a moderately bitter, rusted tin and pine bark acridity, along with muddy smears of orange peel and dried leaf herbality.
The medium+ plus body adds some needed character. This is a weird one. It carries some rustic charm and is actually kinda drinkable once the acclimation process is complete. I can't recommend it as an IPA, English or American. It's like a buddy's off-base, but not racid homebrew. Fuck it, let's drink.
As a general rule: It seems that Hinterland's non-hop-focused offerings are the ones to seek out.

Drank off a firkin dry hopped with appollo hops.

Poured a dirty amber with a creamy perfect cask head.

The nose was very aggressively dankly hopped. Very green and piney.

The flavor is agressively green and dank, very bitter and piney, just tons of fresh hops. Very hoppy and bitter, but not overwhelming even with almost no malt flavor.

Very creamy with lots of resin.

Fun cask beer.

Nitro always makes a nice pour. Bright orange and cascading, settling carbonation. It leaves a frothy off white head with excellent retention.

Pleasant but weak aromas if citrus and lilac. Toasted crackers.

The flavor has a little more punch, again with a nice balance of citrus and floral notes. A little pine in the back end. Bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel on nitro is out of this world. Soft and creamy.

I've had this bottled and it's mediocre. On nitro it's very good.

At the Milwaukee brewpub.

Apparently a new arrival in the market, thankfully it will be fresh.

Bright and clear copper orange, thin wispy skim on the surface. Weak patchy blanket of foam that doesn't stick around more than a few seconds, oddly enough. Clinging string of bubbles around the edges, no lace. Ho hum.

Smells like dried citrus peel, orange mostly. Some light maltiness under that too.

Low level bitterness, it comes off more as an English IPA right off the bat. Mild, with more maltiness than hop character. Mild citrus rind, grassy pine bitterness in the aftertaste, but it's understated. Toffee, caramel, the usual specialty malt flavors with hops as second fiddle though there's some underlying spicy tea notes. Lower carbonation. Overall it's playing way too safe to be an American IPA, and leans more toward a milder English rendition. Not something i'd seek out again.

16 oz bottle poured into a Hinterland stange.
6.85% ABV

A - Faintly hazy, Hinterland's IPA is deep golden honey hued and topped by a dense, frothy, well-retained off-white head. Heavy, chunky lace remains on the glass as the sturdy pile of foam slowly plateaued.

S - Dirty grapefruit rind and ripe, whole pineapple dance between earthy and tropical fruit notes with heavy grassy resin finishing the hop aroma out before biscuity malt balances the beer. Nice hop notes are there but this one could stand quite a bit more dry hopping for added oomph.

T - Hinterland IPA has firm maltiness, starting with soft caramel and biscuity tones that slowly shift to subtle grapefruit and pineapple fruit with undertones of pine but the fruit and earthiness isn't quite defined, lingering with a muddled finish.

M - Subtle bitterness creeps up on the finish but Hinterland's IPA is very round from the get-go, balanced by a malty medium-full body and soft finish.

O - Balance plays a large role in the majority of beer styles but when it comes to IPAs, American-style in particular, "balance" shouldn't be the focus - hops should. This IPA has a very nice malty base but the hops are lacking from the beginning considering the IPA category. Since the style is incredibly competitive, Hinterland's muddled earthy and fruit suggestive version doesn't have the hop-forward focus of aroma or flavor to stand up to other American IPAs. That's not to say it's a bad beer all things considered, but if someone expecting the characteristics commonly associated with today's IPAs were to anticipate that from this beer, they would be disappointed.
