After reading Robin Shepard's favorable review in the Isthmus, I thought I'd give this one a go.
Pours into a Duvel tulip a gentile orange with a thick, frothy off-white foam.
Spicy and floral aroma of lemongrass and chamomile. Lemon. Ginger.
Taste is surprisingly spicy with a strong black pepper presence. Lemon grass hits the top of the palate and the lengthy finish closes with a touch of ginger. A lively yeast character adds depth and a very slight hint of funk. No flaws or negative traits to speak of.
Very spicy and assertive mouthfeel. Medium bodied with aggressive carbonation.
Exceptionally drinkable. I think I'll be buying numerous four packs of this well priced beer this spring.

A: a medium golden beer with great clarity and a rocky, white head with good retention.

S: There are medium black pepper and spicy hops aromas dominating the nose with a slight clove spice. Some fruity esters. The hops smell so fresh that they have that brightness like having just been dumped into the boil kettle while brewing; they bring a moderate amount of grassiness and some lemon citrus notes.

T: Medium-strong citrus and spice flavors with a medium hops bitterness. The spice is a blend of slightly more pepper than clove. The hops are mostly a spice Saaz-like with some lemon character. There is a good amount of Pils malt with a light sweetness but balance is fairly bitter and the finish is dry. An orange fermentation character comes through the more it warms.

M: A moderately light bodied beer with a strong level of carbonation.

O: A dry, spicy somewhat fruity beer with a good amount of hops character; everything that I enjoy about the Saison style. Worth looking for when your in WI. and would be nice great to find locally.

Had at the Milwaukee Hinterland on tap. Pours clear gold under a thick off-white head. Has a lemony aroma. Initial citrus flavor segues into more peppery taste in the finish.

A- There is just a touch of hazy to the golden orange body with a strong carbonation supporting a wispy snow white sticky head.

S- A mineral water aroma with some malt note and a soft saison yeast ester finish.

T- There is a nice fresh lightly toasted malt flavor leads to a mellow saison ester flavor then some green pineapple weed hops in the finish. A gentle bitter note lingers. There is also a mineral note to the Saaz hops that come through.

M- The medium mouthfeel as a gentle fizz in the finish.

O- This beer has a mellow ester profile with a nice balance to the malt flavor and hops are also in balance. Nice session beer and a unique take on the saison style.

Stopped into Hinterland Milwaukee on Eerie St., and was given this bottle to sample. Very friendly folks, and a great, slightly up-scale gastropub.

A- great body color, slightly more amber than most saisons. About one-two fingers of foam, good lacing throughout tasting.

S- malty, hops rising just a touch. Bread with a lingering fruity yeast.

T- starts smooth, then you get the yeast (banana/clove), then you get a great peppery blast. Slightly malty finish.

M- refreshing. enough carbonation to spread the flavors over your tongue. Pepper lingers, but not uncomfortably. Wonderful balance of ingredients.

O- a very, very good Saison. A simple bottle, easy to overlook, but you'll be sorry if you do. Pick up a pack and enjoy them!

Had this on draft at Bar Louie because they were out of Hennepin.

Pours a fairly clear but dark golden straw color. Doesn't look like much body from the pour. Head had good retention and a nice lace.

Smell was good for the style with the typical farmhouse funkiness you expect. Dank citrus fruits and some white pepper spice dominate.

Taste was a step down because the pepper overwhelms. Really, nothing else is noticed.

Mouthfeel also suffers because my palate is ruined from he spice. A bitterness in the the finish is the only thing else to pick up.

Overall it's a fair beer, just nothing to write home about.

Pours a murky golden orange, hazed with suspended sediment. Lasting head or foam, spotty soapy lacing inside the glass.

Coriander dominates the aroma, soft orange and sage in the background, slightly sweet, floral, and spice driven.

Sweet grain, spices, again mainly coriander and sage. Floral bitterness in the aftertaste. Dusty wheat, orange pith, and dried lemon peel. Medium bodied, supple feel, a touch soapy from the spices. Drinkable and quenching, though a bit wet and sweet for a saison.

A - Lazy carbonation travels through the pretty clear golden-hued brew to it's frothy and lingering eggshell head. Heavy lace clings to the glass for a beautiful and style-perfect appearance.

S - Spicy overtones from Hinterland's Saison bring white pepper and lemongrass to the forefront, focusing in on the yeast esters very nicely. Complimentary floral hop notes continue the rustic aroma through to it's pale malt backbone for an exemplary nose.

T - The bouquet of yeast esters develops further in flavor, incorporating chalky clay and subtle apricot fruit into the white pepper and lemongrass taste but floral, citrusy hops become the focus (though not by much) tasting like a full-on Lemonhead. Malt support is spot-on as it's sweetness gently cuts through spice and bitterness for a balanced finish.

M - This medium-bodied saison has a perfect carbonation level; prickly but not sharp, which helps the malt in cutting through some of the spiciness and hop bitterness for a well-balanced but lingering finish.

O - Hinterland's Saison might be all over the map with complex fragrant yeast esters and distinctive hop flavor (and higher than usual bitterness) but the end result is a harmonious brew; one of the better American-brewed Saison-style beers out there, especially if you like Lemonheads, which is certainly what it tends to remind me of.

Pours a dark golden yellow with a foamy white head. Smell is lemon, clove, pepper, some yeast. Taste is clove, lemon zest, pepper, and some yeast. Mouthfeel is light , good carbonation, lots of flavor. The lemon lingers in the aftertaste. Overall a powerful beer, interesting flavors but a bit overpowering for my tastes.

Straight pour from a 16.9oz/500ml pry-off bottle to an oversized wineglass (HF stemware). No bottling date visible, but from what I recall from asking about this in the store this is pretty fresh, like within a couple months of bottling. Certainly not too old.

Appearance (4.5): Beautiful pour: A thick, luscious head of custard-colored foam composed of dense fluff and fat, crackling bubbles. It has good retention, fading slowly and leaving some thick, patchy webs and scattered globs of lace. The body is a rich, perfectly hazy, glowing orange-golden color, like honey. Beautiful beer.

Smell (2.5): Kind of a musty, sweet malt aroma comes out first, kind of like the inside of silo filled with grain and corn—smells a bit like unfermented wort, quite frankly. Sweetened apple juice, boiled grains, some warm, musty character. It’s got an interesting fruitiness, but it’s lacking the lean, crackery malt body, spiciness, and crisp hop character I’d expect from the style.

Taste (3.5): Well, there’s some more spiciness here, anyway—though that sweet fruitiness from the nose is still hanging out here. There’s a nice mix of white and black pepper, a healthy dash of clove, and something herbal but not astringent, like fresh basil, hanging out subtly underneath. The malt retains the kind of sweet, malted grain / wort character that I picked up in the nose, but not as thick or syrupy. It’s not the biscuits / common crackers / rustic white bread that I expect from the style, but more like rich, sweet, buttermilk pancakes. A bit of leafy, herbal bitterness comes through from start to finish, too. But that peppery character actually gets a bit more prominent as the beer goes on—it’s not that it washes anything out, because everything else is still quite evident, but the spicy kick of ground black pepper just becomes a stronger, independently noticeable factor.

Mouthfeel (4.25): This has a really excellent mouthfeel, if a bit full and heavy: good, prickly carbonation is distributed by a lusciously thick, soft carbonation that nicely accompanies the full, slightly heavy-side-of-medium-weight body that has a moderate viscosity but still finishes moderately dry, thanks to a bit of booze and that peppery kick.

Overall (3.5): It’s an interesting saison. It’s actually got all of the classic elements, in my mind, except that it’s kind of a big, thick example of the style with decent spiciness and a richer malt character than I’m used to. It’s not bad. It’s just too malty and thick for what I really enjoy from the style. At least, if it’s going to be this rich, I’d expect a dryer, crisper malt character and some of that sweetness borne by brighter fruits and honey, with lemony crispness to help balance it all out. But y’know, maybe I’m too specific about my expectations—this is still a pretty decent saison, and I’m glad to have tried it, not to mention to see more examples of not-piss-poor saisons available in smaller formats for a decent price. So kudos to Hinterland, if for nothing else than that.

This beer pours a slightly cloudy, tarnished gold in color with a one finger bright white, soapy head. The nose is impressive right off the bat. It features a lot of lemon rhind, a cardamom esque spice, light citrusy yeast, and light hay. The flavors are very well rounded. There is a lot of spicing, a lot of cardamom, and the citrusy peel aspect isn’t over the top. The yeast character is near perfect. It has really nice flavor. It drinks light in body and leaves behind plenty of spice. It’s pretty interesting. For an American made saison, this is pretty solid. While I may get flack for this, I would say that it is a poor man’s version of Fantome Hiver, with a much lighter mouthfeel.

Pours a clean deep yellow color, with a white head. In the aroma, small earth notes and a little spice too. In the taste, spicy, earthy, and a nice yeast presence. A spice like bite and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry earth and yeast aftertaste. The color scared me a bit, but nice earth and spice all the way through.

Serving type: 16-ounce bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a tulip. The color is very hazy gold. Around two fingers of off-white head dissipated to leave a thin lacing and ring around the edge.

Smell: Tame Belgian farmhouse funk lets fruity notes of orange, lemon, and grapefruit shine. It also has sweet apple and clove/pepper spice; it is very reminiscent of hefeweizen. Funky hefeweizen, that is.

Taste: It offers a surprising kick of spice to the back of the throat. The effect reminds me of curry but the flavor is more like white pepper. The other flavors create a well-balanced mélange and nothing really stands out like it does in the smell: light funk, orange, lemon, grapefruit, and spicy clove.

Drinkability: I am impressed. This may have turned me into a fan of saison.

Pint Bottle poured into beer clean glass.

A- Pours a two finger bright white head which settles into a nice cap after a minute. Very good sticky white lacing. Body is golden yellow with ample fine sediment.

S- A definite lemon and pepper on the nose as well as some coriander and clove. I get a little bit of the characteristic yeasty saison yeast and some definite sweetness.

T- Starts out with ample lemon, some coriander, orange peel and just a little bit of yeast on the finish which eventually dries out. I wish I got a lot more yeasty character here.

M- Low carbonation. Smooth Finish.

O- I had this on another occasion and remembered much more yeasty saison characteristic. Either way, this is a good beer I would enjoy again in the future.

A - Hazy golden color with a finger of bone white head that lingers for the majority of the drink.

S - The nose is absolutely bursting with deliciousness, and I cannot stress that enough. It is really incredible. Cloves, fresh baked banana bread, and a muted floral note.

T - Much like the aroma, but with the hops coming more into play than in the nose. Lovely flavors of rich breads and that tangy bite from the yeast that really ties it all together. Quite peppery/spicy on the finish.

M - Smooth and creamy with a bit of a bite on the finish.

O - We did a blind taste test with this against the New Glarus Saision, and out of 5 tasters, the Hinterland won unanimously. Pretty impressive brew, and only the second I have tried from this brewery... I will have to try some of their other offerings.

A) Hazy golden straw with soapy white head. Shines bright when held to the light

S) Sour dough, banana, clove, apple pie. Lots of yummy stuff.

T) Smooth and refreshing. Sweet caramel malt, mild hops. lemon zest

M) Mediium body with ample carbonation, mild esthers

O) Excellent interpretation of the classic farmhouse ale.

A: Wheat-yellow color (if that makes sense) with a one-finger head
S: Lemongrass, wheat and spice, though there's also a distinct note of something that reminds me of laundry detergent- not necessarily bad just out of place
T: Coriander, basil, lemongrass, white pepper. Tastes okay but could use some wheat/hops on top of the herbs/spice
M: Medium-bodied, fairly smooth, good carbonation
O: Interesting to try, fits the style well but probably not a repeat purchase

Whew. This tastes like I am biting into a pile of herbs or something. It's way overboard, and the saison tones are quite soapy. No balance at all here. I think that after recently trying Liopard Oir, my standards for a saison have been refreshed in my mind. Unfortunately, this comes nowhere close. A miss, in my book.

Bottle bought at Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati and poured into a full-pint tumbler glass.

A- Fairly clear golden color with a good amount of floating sediment.

S- Lemon is definitely big on the nose, along with some other attributes typical of this style.

T- Again, strong on the lemon. Many other spices come through, but are outdone by the lemon flavor.

M- Very smooth with a medium body that is quite drinkable.

O- Much more unique than I was expecting. This beer is definitely worth a try, and I will pick one up again if I see it. A refreshing take on the style.

Pour produces a two finger head of white froth. Color is a hazy orange in my Duvel tulip glass.

Spicy nose with pungent coriander, floral, and Belgian yeast.

Flavor opens up after 30 minutes with a pepper bite then coriander, lemon zest and light orange. A bit more dry than the sample I tried last summer at the Oswego Brewer's fest.. That beer had stronger coriander and more sweetness which I loved but this one is still pleasant. A bit sour in the finish on the back of the tongue.

Mouthfeel is light and refreshing. Crisp and effervescent and a good representation of the style.

Ovarall I like this one though not as well as the last sample. Next I will try/review the IPA!

A - Slightly hazy golden with a fluffy white head leaving huge strands of sticky lace.

S - Strong lemongrass and lemon peel aroma. Black pepper, ginger with some grainy malt.

T - Lemongrass leads to black pepper and ginger. Some lemon peel and graham cracker type malt. The spices appear much stronger than I remember in the draft version that has been around for the last few months.

M - Medium body with lively carbonation. I remember the draft version being a bit drier but the heavier spicing in this one seems to leave a bit more mouthfeel.

D - One of the best spiced Saisons I remember having. I think I like a little less spicing that I remember in the draft version although this bottle is extremely fresh.

Hrd to keep the chunky sediment out of the glass. Pretty good bubbling and a strong film of foam that leaves some sticky lace and for almost all sixteen ounces.

Earthy, Spring fruit nose. Smells yeasty and dry with a just hint of melon.

Pretty sweet, yeasty flavor to this saison. One of the sweetest of memory. Dry banana and melon mixed in a light earthy melange of sweet toasted malt and soft hopping.

Palate is carbonated, but not as bubbly as I like in my saisons. Palate is dry yet oily on teh back of the tongue.

A. Light amber to dark straw appearance with a white head of 2 fingers. Laces quite well.

S. Grainy, somewhat shy nose.

T. Nice and spicy as it should be with orange zest and pepper. Bready malt adds balance.

M. Light bodied with good carbonation. Makes for easy drinking.

O. This may be Hinterland's best beer to date and the best non-Belgian Saison I've had in a long time. It is very easy to drink and is quite satisfying. Should make for a nice warm weather beer that is refreshing and thirst quenching. More please.
