On tap into a pint glass

A - Very thin white head that dissipates almost immediately to next to nothing. Head was just a bit off white while it lasted. Beer itself is a dark brown with a bit of garnet and ruby filtering through. Some minor carbonation can be seen around the edges rising slow to moderately paced towards the top. 3.75/5

S - Dark toasted bread and a slight note of caramel highlight the aroma profile. There is a bit of woodiness and nuttiness to the aroma along with a grassy hop profile. Ever so slight notes of coffee and cocoa powder are present. Aroma is somewhat muted. 3.75/5

T - Luckily the taste is not nearly as muted as the aroma. Toasted dark wheat bread hits my taste buds right up front along with a nice caramelization and just a hint of bitter coffee and cocoa powder. The coffee and cocoa powder are more undertones than anything but round out the sweetness a bit. The middle part of the tasting is a bit grainy, and this transitions to a woodiness and then a grassy hop profile that finishes out the tasting. There is only a slight bitterness on the back end which lingers ever so slightly and then disappears. 4/5

M - Light to medium bodied dunkel lager that has a slight carbonation burn but nothing too pronounced. Light and crisp is the name of the game here and this beer does not really linger in the mouth at all upon swallowing. 4/5

O - Well balanced dunkel offering that features a pronounced malt profile with a hop profile that plays second fiddle but balances things out a bit. Sessionable dunkel that sits easy in the stomach and does not linger in the mouth. 3.75/5

Where did the head go? This beer has sat with me for 5 min, and is no just a ruddy brown torso aimlessly floundering while I slander it on the interweb. It wafts an aroma of roots and rootbeer. It may seem a bit woody, but its screaming candy or soda. The mouthfeel isn't far off. There's a bit more body here than in the house light but it still finishes a watery mess. The beer hints at a hoppy licorice flavor, but is disappointingly simple when compared to the darks served at other prague brew pubs. It is quite sessionable - well, it would be if that cloying sweetness didn't well up as the beer warmed.

On-tap at Novoměstský Pivovar, Prague, Czech Republic

A: The beer is very dark amber in color and poured with a two finger high white head.
S: There are aromas of dark malts and notes of coffee in the nose.
T: There are light to moderate flavors of dark malts, coffee and cola in the taste.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is relatively easy to drink and goes down rather smoothly, which makes it quite sessionable.

Black with a dense tan head; liquorice, grain, cream and bread aroma; bitterish taste with liquorice, roast, resin and wood aromas; bitterish finish with cream, grain, milk and roast aromas.

A very pleasant dry beer with plenty of dark malt flavours and a surprising amount of hoppiness for a dark beer. Definitely in the dry Bohemian Tmavý Ležák style.

500 ml swingtop bottle, bought at the brewpub. Colour of this unfiltered and unpasteurised beer is hazy reddish brown. Pours with an enormous light tan head, which soon diminishes. Aroma is very malty (typical dunkel) with caramel and hints of oak and yeast. Quite flavourful for a beer this low ABV, plenty of malts and toffee, but low on hops. Smooth and easy drinking. The bottles were overpriced by Czech standards, but a Norwegian won’t mind!

It's best when fresh. The new town breweries dark beer is quite a treat, if a touch simple.

Came to the table black with a reddish hue and an off white head. The head stuck for a while, leaving a nominal lacing when it finally went down.

Smell wasn't very attractive. The malt smelt like it had been roasted, and poorly. From the the odor it smelt burnt, heavy and sweet.

Thankfully the beer is much better than the atrocious smell. The most predominant flavor is coffee, lots of coffee. Touches of burnt chocolate, and a few fruit accents from the hops. The Zatec hops feel extremely muted.

Feels smooth at first but a little harsh.

Not a bad beer at all. Simple, but worth a try. It complements their pleasent food quite well.

NOTE: Reviewed from notes.

Pours a brown-black color that is reddish when held in a light. Very little smell to it, though it was hard to tell in such a smoky environment. Has a "burnt" taste, but less so than a stout beer. Chocolate and coffee flavors, but also a little too watery. Not much visible carbonation. Aftertaste is of dark chocolate. Very fresh. Overall not a bad brew.
