When I was a youngster, this is the beer my dad kept in the fridge. It was a good beer in the 80's. Fire-brewed. Served at Comiskey. It may have been the first 30-pack beer I ever saw. We drunked a ton of it. My dad shook his head when the stock disappeared, but he still bought more.
Picked some up recently to be nostalgic. Awful nasty crap. I'm pretty sure this beer has gone through some new ownerships along the way. It ain't the same.

Not as bad as I had been anticipating. Here goes:

A: Clear yellow, OK head, very little lacing. Carbonation is also somewhat lacking. Meh.

S: Not as bad as other AAL's. Sure, there's corn, but there are also substantial amounts of grassy pilsner hops and barley. Good.

T: Follows the nose. More hops than most AAL's. Corn is actually not very robust relative to most AAL's. Not bad.

F: Smooth and crisp, but very watery.

O: OK beer. Would have over Bud, Miller, or Coors.

My first taste of beer was a Stroh's and it has a little more character than many of the other BMC beers and PBR but not a lot more. I use it for boiling brats.

Well, Pabst BC owns Stroh's, but Strph's is better tasting than PBR, in my opinion, and costs a few dollars less than PBR, for a 12pk. Also, it beats any of the BMC beers.

Appearance: Pours from the can a pallid yellow, with an abundance of white foam and an attractive lacing.

Aroma: Simply put, sweet and creamy corn and cereal grains. Very average and unremarkable for the style.

Taste: Mild, watery, thin, and sweet. Not offensive per se, but certainly a completely average American adjunct lager. Perhaps a tad better than the similar Budweiser or MillerCoors junk beer, but not by much. In a word, forgettable.

If you are embarking on a 16 hour day drinking adventure, this is the beer for the job. Mild flavor, low alcohol, and does taste too bad out of an icy cooler.

Okay, Instead of the same old adjectives and rant's against this beer I will let you folks know about Stroh's. I worked there for 22 years. Its a macro-brew. Nuff said? Its like expecting Forest Gump to give a Nobel Prize winning dissertation on the Quark and its relevance to String Theory. Anyway....

As for the flame brewing..... All I can say is Bwahahahaha!! Our brew kettle's, the big beautiful beasts they were, were far from flamed up like our banjo burners at home. No, we had one single, laughable little burner under the kettle. It's flame was the equivalent of 10-15 candles. That was the extent of the fire brewing. 99.999% of the cooking process was steam injection.

On to the claim of ingredients on the can/bottle. Yes it was Traditionally fire brewed with malt, barley, water and hops..... catch that.... Traditionally, meaning past tense. No, it is not still brewed with ONLY Malt, Barley, water and hops, it USED to be. That's called "Market Speak" It is made with Corn Syrup, malt, water and hops. I know, I used to hook up steam hoses to rail cars and pump the sticky mess into storage inside the plant's Brewing Department.

It was good beer for the price. In today's market, the home brew people would love Stroh's, It used Cascade hops and kents Golding. It is hoppy for a macro brew with heavy citrus notes, think grapefruit, in the back end. It is a world better than the watered down water AB puts out as light beer.

I will be letting a few more secrets out about other Stroh's Beers in other reviews. ;)

True story: In college, I purchased a 12 pack of Stroh's. I could only drink three of them. I gave the next six away to one person at a time (because no one would take a second one). I ended up pouring the last three down the drain after a year in the fridge. Make of that what you will.

Used to tend bar 30 yrs ago, and still carries the same taste and characteristics today. Was a very popular pour in the 'rust belt' region, mainly used to chase the after shift 'shot and a beer'. The price is about the same today as it was 30 yrs ago (I bought a 15 pack of cans for $8.49 in October 2014). Given that, it has weathered inflation better than most beers.

Light corn grist, faint hops, near toffee like malt. Light bitterness, coupled with corn cob. Ever so faint diactel but not too bad, I've had dirtier lagers but can't call it clean. Light bodied watery brew. Overall, this is an ok adjunct lager.

It's probably been a few decades since I last had Stroh's, sneaking sips off of adult's beers at some backyard bbq function in the early 80's. There are still a couple old Stroh's signs around town, a relic of the past at neighborhood corner taverns like Mickeys.

Pale anemic gold, racing carb trails, feeble head that fades after the first sip to a broken patchy skim on the surface.

It doesn't smell bad, but it doesn't smell good either. Swilly wet grains, manila folders.

Taste is astringent and watery, slightly harsh. Papery grainy "flavor" that's extremely hard to pick up. Bland and only slightly offensive. Has little redeeming value, it's not one of the better nostalgia macros out there, PBR is far better for a generic macro.

12 oz. can poured into a coke glass.

A - Straw. Half- inch head goes away fast. Spotty lacing.

S - Barley and bread.

T - Lightly carbonated with sweet barley malt, grains, and faint hops. Crisp with no aftertaste.

M - Light.

O - Tastes much better than I remember 20 years ago. Quite refreshing! I think I'll have a couple more tonight. Cheers!

appearance. Has a yellow pilsner look with a 1 finger white head.

smell.- has a cheaper beer smell but the light wheat smell kind of makes me like it a little bit.

taste.- tastes like a heavier wheatier pilsner beer. is a bit heavier in the wheat taste than PBR.. Kind of tastes like a cheap thirty pack but really isn't that horrible. is a good session beer to get drunk on.

mouth feel- a little bit of carbonation but feels great on the tongue and mouth.

Overall this is a great beer to get drunk on. It is not a horrible thirty pack like a natural light but it is not a fantastic beer either. I do like Milwaukee's best ice better but this is god for the price and I'll buy it again because I definitely like it better than bud light.

Stroh's is a Fire roasted hops brew. This brew has a nice golden amber Color. Has a rich taste and smooth. A taste you will not find anywhere else. It is your everyday American Larger Beer. This is a good drinking brew. Goes down smooth. Priced right. I will be getting this brew to change up on other main stream brews out on the market.

If you all could understand Stroh's before Pabst.. Fire-Brewed.. In Detroit.. Michigan!!! Before Detroit was Bankrupt... A magical time when craft was a union term and beer was guzzled... opened with a can opener... with no special flavour vents,.. or whatever they call beer can openings these days.. 355 mL can, pulled from a 15-pack picked up at The Beer Store. This version is brewed for the Canadian market, listed at an even 5% abv and made by Sleeman at their Guelph brewery. Served ice cold.

Pours a familiar pale golden-yellow colour, bright and clear, topped with one finger of fizzy, bone-white head that wastes no time fizzling away. The aroma is bland, and typical of cheap lagers - grainy pale malts and corn husk, with maybe a faint whiff of grass. The adjunct is detectable, but this brew manages to avoid the sweet, corn syrupy aroma found in some lower-quality examples of this style. Pretty standard stuff so far.

As far as flavour goes, this actually tastes pretty good for what it is. Grainy barley malts come through nicely; a little sweet, with a light brushing of adjunct corniness. Weak hint of grassy hop dryness toward the finish. Surprisingly full-flavoured and clean-tasting for a cheap pale lager. Light-bodied and watery, with fizzy, high carbonation levels typical of macro lagers that give it a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. Smooth and easy to toss back.

Final Grade: 3.14, a passable C+. Stroh's obviously isn't the greatest beer I've ever had, but as far as cheap adjunct lagers go, you could do worse - far, far worse. This is a serviceable macro brew that will get the job done; I could pound these all night, and - thanks to the relatively clean taste and lack of cloying adjunct notes - never get tired of it. One of 3 or 4 'value brand' lagers available in the Ontario market that I would consider worth re-purchasing. Stroh's floats above the rest of the cream of the crap, and I hold it in roughly similar esteem as the likes of PBR, Miller High Life, and other 'upper tier' domestic US macros. Bottoms up!

Poured into pint glass. Foamed and quickly went to thin layer. Slight stickness to glass. High carbonation. Very light, watered down flavor,pale yellow. Better then bud or coors for a cheap beer. Not bad for just a plain basic no frills beer. I will buy a case again for river float trips. A good river,fishing kinda of beer.

I had this beer during a stag party in DC. This beer was simply gross. It tasted like milk.

It really didn't have any redeeming qualities except for the fact that it was cheap, and since I was on the hook for the groom-to-be's tab, that counted for something.

We switched to National Bohemian as a step up from this - not a great night for good beer.

From my old 1984 Beer Ratings Book.
Gold in color, clear in appearance, developed a weak, light head. Aroma was light and yeasty / hoppy. Taste was fruity and sweet with a mild, dry aftertaste.
I liked this beer as compared to the American Lagers of the time. Was a good price and tasted better than Bud or Miller, at least to me.

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

Oh, you'd better believe this is part of a Spelunky fest! It pours a clear yellow topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises corn and very light wheat. The taste holds notes of corn, flowers, and a slightly odd and vague sweetness. The body is quite light, with a moderate carbonation and a watery feel. Overall, one of the better adjunct lagers I've had in a while, though still a good distance away from a truly good beer.

As I drank it, what kept occurring to me was “man, this is good beer”. Stroh’s is now my favorite beer. Is it the best beer there is? Of course not. But, as an American style lager, it’s really, really, really good. Let’s have a look at what makes it so good.

As I’ve noted elsewhere, it’s important to realize that we’re talking about an American style beer. Why? Because Stroh’s isn’t a European brew, nor is it an ale, porter, stout, etc. If you’re approaching it expecting some wet-cement-thick, black-colored, insanely hopped stout, you’re going to be disappointed. A moment’s thought reveals why: because it’s not that. Get it? You either appreciate American style beers for the beers [not ales/porters/stouts/etc.] they are, or you move on to something else.

And, IMO, this is a really outstanding example of American beer [not ale/porter/stout/etc.]. What’s so good about it? Flavor. Flavor. Flavor. Stroh’s is little hoppier than the average macro brew. It’s about average in thickness. But, as in music, it’s the all important midrange that counts – the flavor. And, to me it tastes just as an American beer should taste. If you sample it with an open mind, you’ll find that the flavor is multi-dimensional. It gives you a bouquet of flavors, rather than a one-note, undistinguished quality as does, say, Corona Extra. It’s the rich complexity of flavors that make Stroh’s so special. Rich complexity isn’t something you normally associate with most beers of any provenance. That’s not to say that Stroh’s is at the level of, say, Daisy Cutter or Hopilicious, but it is something special in its class.

All of the goodness I’ve just described depends on several factors. Firstly, as with any beer, you’ve got to get it fresh. 5 weeks out from its expiration date, and its already lost much of its special flavor, and just a hint of skunkiness may even have crept in. If that’s what you’re sampling, then you’re not getting the beer at its best. Ideally, you should be getting it at least two months out from expiration. Secondly, there seems to be some slight variation from batch to batch. The batch which I sampled early in the summer was outstanding. The present batch isn’t quite as stupendously stellar, though still very good.

Thirdly, if you do decide to try it, don’t drink it after drinking some strongly hopped beer. I’ll assume that everyone here is experienced enough to understand that if you sample a milder beer after drinking a more pungent one, the milder beer will seem to have utterly no flavor. So, don’t do that.

I’ve tried many different beers, ales, etc., over the last few years, making an effort to visit breweries to sample their products at their freshest. While there are certainly many wonderful brews available today, Stroh’s is the one to which I continue to return. It’ll always bring a smile to your face, and the certainty that it tastes the way beer should.

Had this one at Green Dot Stables in Detroit -- you gotta check this place out if you're in the area.

As I had this from a bottle, I can't judge the appearance -- though I have seen pictures. Typical, average looking BMC-like beer. Not much to be said. Very average, indeed.

Smell: You get that adjunct smell. Corn. Weak, cheap malts. Nothing too appealing or special.

Taste: I got this expecting it to maybe be like a Blue Ribbon, but Stroh's pales in comparison. This is a drinkable, better-than-BMC macro that I wouldn't mind having again, but I'd definitely take a PBR over this one. PBR's hint of sweetness and seemingly better quality makes me choose that one over Stroh's.

A - Pours the brighest transparent yellow I have ever seen from a beer with a two finger bubbly white head. The head disappears within 2 seconds, and the beer has no lacing.

S - Smells of extremely light corn adjunct and some kind of funky sour mash? Smells kind of like a Foster's.

T - For the first time ever, I can honestly say that I have had a beer with absolutely no taste. This beer literally has nothing in the taste department other than extremely slight seltzer water far off into the background.

M - The mouthfeel brings virtually nothing new to the table other than a faint amount of rice adjunct. But overall it remains very flavorless.

O - Overall, this beer wins an award in my opinion. The award for blandest beer I have ever had. They shouldn't even brew this stuff, it actually has less flavor than Bud Light. Luckily, I didn't pay for it, as I had it at a party. The party was definitely some fun after knocking back 10 of these though!

Can into tulip pint.

A vigorous pour yields 3 fluffy white fingers of head. Those three fingers fizzled down to a light film and a collar around the rim after a short time. The film faded, but the rim held on for some time.
Very clear, bright straw-gold. Really fizzy.

Smells lightly grainy with a light bitterness. The taste is pretty dry with a slight sour-mashy grainy tart note.

Watery, thin, light, and highly carbonated. This is pretty much spot on for the style.

Overall-- not a very good beer, even for the style. I didn't know this was brewed by Pabst... Personally I'd rather just have a PBR.

this beer is good for when you want to still drink abunch of beer then be completely fine to drive. Ive drank this all day and had buddies call me at night to go get a bite to eat and do some real partying afterwards so if anything its a good warm up beer i suppose.
