Unique Beer #0663
This was a six-pack I grabbed from a local stop without inspecting the label too closely. When I got home and saw that it was actually brewed in Latrobe, I was both wary and confused.
After some research, it seems that this beer is contract brewed by Lion after it was originally brewed by Pabst. Lion, like several other breweries like Samuel Adams (BBC) and Iron City, contract brew at the old Latrobe brewery that once produced Rolling Rock before being purchased by A-B/InBev.
Strangely, Lion doesn't list the beer on its website supposedly because it doesn't list any of its contract beers - which isn't too unusual. So, this is a Lion product, but it's currently brewed in Latrobe, not Wilkes-Barre.
On to the taste - it's not too bad. Irish Red is probably a much better indication of style than Pale Ale, since there's very little hop character and it has a sweet finish. A little bland, a little bubbly - a tasty beer for the price though which I should point out is quite reasonable AND - the bottles are returnable, which is nice for my homebrewing situation. This alone can redeem a mediocre beer in my opinion. I hate twist offs and LNNR's... [EDIT: Good luck getting the labels off of these bottles - they are not typical paper labels and if you peel them off, you're left with sticky adhesive residue. This was after soaking for several days in hot water and oxy clean which usually removes the most stubborn labels for me. So, they're not even worth the effort for homebrewing.]
Anyway, nothing too exciting and know what you're getting - this is a typical Lion ale, not something from the famous New York pub.
