500ml swingtop bottle served in a weissen glass at Die Weisse. Date on the bottle was 23/02/24.

Pours amber orange with a slight haze, big head, and not a lot of carbonation. Smell is wheat, bread yeast, light cloves, and a hint of banana.

Taste is far down the fruity road, with some earthy bitterness, light caramel.

Mouthfeel is almost thick, just a bit of slickness to it. Overall, it's pretty good, but not gerat.

Die Weisse Hell
,5l brown glass flip-top bottle for €5 @ Café Museum, Wien

Ha ha, the brewery's slogan is "...macht spass im mund!" which translates in English to "...makes fun in your mouth!". I'm pretty sure that wouldn't go over too well in the dirty-minded U.S.of A.

Despite having to pay a premium to enjoy a beer at the Café Museum, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a basic hefeweizen with the standard cloudy golden-orange body beneath a full, bright white head of foam which displays very good head retention and lacing. (At least at the Café Museum you know you'll get a clean glass!).

The aroma and flavor are as typical as the appearance, offering wheat malt, clove, and semi-tart apple. It's perfectly balanced, rounded, and drinkable.

It's not unique (how could it be? It's an Austrian version of a southwestern German style...), and in fact I've had several others that have tasted very much the same, but it's really well done, and highly recommended.

On-tap at the brewery itself. Listed at 5.5%, on to the beer:

This is dark yellow in color and looks almost like goldenrod, so a little darker than your usual hefeweizen. The head on top is creamy and leaves good lace around. Malted wheat with a sprinkle of yeast makes the nose, while its taste is a little more complex than the nose. The taste of lemon strikes first, and some banana bread follows. A kiss of spice adds needed jazz to the beer. It's light bodied and paired with gentle carbonation.

On its own, it's a pleasant and acceptable hefeweizen.

Served from the tap, in the traditional Weiss Beer tall glass, with good dense head, colour slightly more bronze than the average Hefe Weiss beer. Aroma fruity as expected, hint of cinnamon maybe, and appealing. Taste is good, fresh and crisp, but fruity and smooth at the same time, very pleasant. Fairly light in texture. The usual expectation of a Hefe Weiss beer, maybe slightly sweeter than some, easy to drink, and would have stayed for more if the brewery bar had been quieter! From my experience at the brewery tap "Die Weiss" this is a good beer, though I understand it can vary a bit. Definately worth having when in Salzburg.
