500mL brown bottle with gold foil, best before 12.07.05.

Appearance: Chestnut and proud with good head retention for the duration of the beer. Lacing everywhere. Quite effervescent.

Smell: Not overpowering, but hints of licorice and chocolate. This beer is best served cool so volatile characteristics are limited.

Taste: Refreshing but complex - pleasing candied sugar and toffee on the palate, malty but subtle. Generally sweet, goes down very smoothly.

Mouthfeel: Bubbly and creamy. Although this is easier to achieve for a midstrength dark lager than for a bock or quadrupel, mouthfeel is nonetheless very enjoyable.

Drinkability: Impeccable. You could drink heaps of these and still have the same creamy, understated toffee feel without being disturbed by too much ABV. I think I'll have a second one right away in fact.

Notes: I've always liked this beer, and its best quality is the way it keeps after travelling - this tastes the same out of the bottle in Australia as in a Bratislava bierkeller. My favourite beer of the style, and most similar styles.

500 ml bottle dated Nov. 9 2011.
{I had this beeer just 2 days ago on tap in Prague and the bottle version, at least with the interval of nearly 2 days, indistinguishable.)

A - very dark mahogany rather than black (cerny); clear with a tan head that has good retention.

Aroma: very pleasant medium toasted malt with hints of spicy hops.

T - slightly sweet with a fine malt flavor; very little noticable hop contribution.

M = excellent creamy mouthfeel with medium body.

O - exceptionally drinkable beer: my 1/2 L was gone in no time.

OK, i only ever sampled this once, and yes i will resample again, given the hight ratings given so far, mine was sweet with a raisiny chocolate flavour, short finish and quite a syruppy texture, i'm starting to think my bottle may not have been as fresh as it could have been.

A- This beer pours a clear but dense glowing garnet red body with a creamy thick beige head supported by a sea of microbubbles.

S- The clean lagered toffee aroma has a faint coffee roasted note and a mellow pot caramel hint comes through as it opens.

T- The mineral water and toffee hints have a slight tin taste to it with some water taste in the finish. There is a spicy note in the finish with some bread crust hints and a faint bitter Noble hop aftertaste coming through as it warms. There is also a touch of sulfur flavor at the finish when it is pretty warm.

M- The light mouthfeel has a scrubbing fizz and no real alcohol heat noticed.

O- The nice crisp clean bock turns a bit mineral water and a bit sulfury as it opens up. The fizz grows and scrubs a lot of the malt flavors away.

A nice dark, thanks to Radek bought in Poland. Wine brandy colour, bit of lace. Licorice, bit sour, despite malting including caramel. Tad chocolate malt as well. Bit of roast. Not complex, easy drink. A particular dunkel style, OK but not that I seek out.

Pours no head on a dark brown body.
The aroma is mild roasted malt, dry hay and grain. Pleasant.
The taste is roasted malt with mild lemon and molasses.
The texture is thin and smooth with moderate carbonation.
It's a nice dark lager, easy to drink.

Very deep and rich amber appearance. Light tan head, with some stickiness/Belgian lace. Wonderful rich chocolate/coffee smell. Unbelievable dark, rich taste. This beer tastes very much like cocoa. I can not imagine drinking more than one of these at a time, as one bottle would take the place of a whole German chocolate cake and a cup of sweetened espresso.

Pours dark brown with a large, light tan head.
Aroma comprised of caramel, chocolate and nutty malt. Very sweet smelling.
Similar flavours with caramel, nuts and lots of bready malt. Very low bitterness. Quite sweet.
Body is a bit watery, carbonation is too high.
Super easy to drink though.

a: dark brown with slight hints of red

s: slight caramel

t: slightly caramel and medium roasted malt. beginings of a coffee flavor

m: deceivingly light on the palate. not much dextrins

d: can definitely put down a few pints and not feel anything.

All in all, a nice example of a dark Czech beer with some complexity and none of the heaviness of an English porter or stout.

I got this from a bar manager where I hang out. A waitress there is from the Czech Republic and bought it back with her on her last visit home.

I poured into a pint glass to an inch of tan head. It is a dark reddish brown and clear. I can smell the sweet chocolate immediately. It tastes sweet and of chocolate as well. I am very impressed. I was not looking forward to trying this beer, but it is quite tasty. It is easy drinking. This is way better than Pilsner Urquell. Too bad she didn't bring some more back.

A: The beer is clear and very dark amber in color and came with a two finger high beige head that slowly died down and left a thin layer of bubbles consistently covering the surface. No carbonation is visible in the form of rising bubbles.
S: There are light aromas of caramel and sweetness in the nose along with some subtle hints of molasses.
T: The taste is slightly sweet and has some hints of caramel. No bitterness or hoppy flavors are noticeable. The finish is rather sweet.
M: It feels light-bodied and very smooth on the palate, although a bit thin and watery. There is a light to moderate amount of carbonation.
D: I could drink these all night because it almost goes down like water.
