The first reviewer must have had the same bottle I'm drinking. Ditto.

Particularly dark Czech lager. Aromas of stone-cracked grain. Canadian Whiskey, honey, dull hops and green flowers. Rich and round, almost sweet, with well proportioned hop bitterness rising up through the mid palate and emerging triumphant on the finish.
Bartlett pear skins.
Not a lot of aromatic hops in my example. Bold style.

A friend brought me back several bottles of Kozel brews from her trip to the Czech Republic. Thanks for the effort, April!

This lager is another good example of a Czech Pilsner. It is more aromatic than Kozel's lighter lager, Svetly. The grassy aromas aren't quite so present here but are replaced by perfume-like smells. The taste is crisp, very much in line with Radegast, Czechvar and other pilsners.

If you're looking for a nice pilsner to drink, give Kozel Premium a try.

Format: a solid 500mL brown embossed bottle with a decent macro label.

Appearance: pours out a light golden amber with moderate visible carbonation. A finger of head lasts for a time.

Aroma: biscuit malts with light grains and a touch of grass hops. Not much to it.

Taste: more grains here than biscuit malts, but still the grass hops. Okay.

Aftertaste: the aroma was decent, but the taste comes across more like a lager than a pilsner.

Mouth feel: light in feel with a moderate carbonation.

Overall: not a bad pilsner but not my favourite. An easy-drinking beer but nothing really special. Decent price for AU$62 for a case of 20 x 500mL.

16oz can.

A- Darker straw yellow pour. Crystal clear with a two finger soapy head.

S- Light biscuit with a touch of grass and super faint hop.

T- Slight grass with an earthy taste. Slight cereal with a touch of hop. Very bland smelling.

M- Light and refreshing, prickly carbonation.

O- Typical Czech Pilsener, light and refreshing.

A very nice pale lager, impressive as to all aspects of this offering with one exception....Colour is medium gold...very nice head and aroma is crisp & clean....body is medium and taste is hoppy and pleasant...I love it, well I like it a lot....But...please get rid of that neck foil.

deep golden in color forming a 2cm full white head that settles to a thin lace. plenty of almost tiny bubbles rising to the surface.
surprisingly malty aroma. pretty much no chance to smell any hops through that. smells a lot darker than it is.
strong malt presence in the taste as well. nice, but could use some bitterness to balance it out. very smooth.

Originally reviewed February 19, 2005. 12 Oz Bottle. Appealing golden-tan pour. Coarse carbonation, uneven lacing. Fresh cotton and malt aroma. Supple lager, great fresh malt, nicely balanced and swirled with hops. Light citrus and complex grain finish. Sweet, yet a little dry. Sustains on the palate. Very drinkable and smooth!

Purchased at the LCBO for $2.30 for a 500ml can. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a nice 1" high white head that lasts for a minute or two before filming out. Dark gold color and filtered clear

S- Lots of malt here. Some hops but nothing special.

T- Rich with a heavy body. Nice malt backbone. I do enjoy this one.

M- Thick and rich.

O- Pretty good little brew. Very enjoyable and will buy again for a late autumn day. Fairly complex for a mass produced brew

Food Pairing

This nice little brew went well with...... BBQ'd hamburgers. I topped mine with cheese, onion and tomato. Tried a bit of mustard on the edge of a bite and it did not go well together so be warned.

Pale gold, heavy, white rocky head, good bubbling.
Restrained nose...some hay & caramel hints.
Malt & hop well balanced.... Slight metallic/blood flavour.
Medium bitterness and body. Finishes crisply, and not cloying. Quite refreshing, but nothing remarkable.

50CL Bottle poured into imperial pint glass

A- Golden blonde, creamy 2 finger head, that has moderate retention and some nice lacing

S- Not a lot, some faint grassy malts.

T- Some bready malt in the beginning changing to an inoffensive faint hop bite in the finish. Finish is creamy, which i think is supposed to be a hallmark of czech pilsener?

M- Medium body and carbonation.

D- Not enough hops, too bland, but i think im right in saying the creamy texture in the finish is supposed to be there, so that makes up slightly for it. Nevertheless, better pilseners out there! Next!

an above average pilsener that does not have the wider recognition it deserves. not my favorite of the czech variety, but as an inexpensive, easy to drink and pleasant tasting pilsener, this is one to enjoy in a session.

lovely color, garnet hues, poured with a thick creamy head which went rapidly. not a huge nose on it, but there were hints of mixed grain, pears and some floral notes. smooth malty taste thats also a little fruity, it finishes with a fantastic zing of saaz hops which gives it a clean finish. full bodied, with lingering traces of honey at the end.

as i write this its a stinking hot day out there, and this beer is going down a treat. nothing too complex, the characters of the beer are all in the right places it makes for a quite enjoyable beer that doesnt demand too much of the drinker. one that can enter the rotation every so often and make a nice addition.

Appearance: A finger and a half of head on the pour and the ample body carbonation are the good. The bad is everything else, as tiny grain flakes are floating in the brassy body. No head retention and no lacing doesn't help things either.

Smell: Biscuit malt dominates the nose, but it's off. It has a weak lemon citrus note to it that oddly seems like when you squeeze a lemon slice into a glass of water in a restauraunt. It seems to clash with the also weak herbal hop note.

Taste: It's got a mild biscut note that reminds me of sugarless cookies to start. It turns then to a a dry bready taste that reminds me of melba toast and ends with a sandy dusting of hops.

Mouthfeel: It leaves a dry sensation in the mouth that thankfully accents more of the earthy and breadier aspects of the beer. The carbonation seems to be doing this beer a bit of a disservice as it's really accentuating that dryness.

Drinkability: It's a little bit too dry for my liking, and while it's light bodied. It's not crisp like a pilsener and refreshing,, but more crisp like a potatoe chip without the salt or flavour to keep you going at the bag.

Final Thoughts: At first looking at the can, I thought this was a doppelbock. Probably becuase of the goat logo and the long name in the background. I guess that's not really relevant, but I think they should try to work on making their beer a bit more like one, IE killing the dryness and giving more of a malt presence.

Very pale and clear, but with a deep hint of red-gold. Malty, certainly, but a very honeyish malt flavour, as opposed to the fuller Budvar maltiness, that comes from the very pale malts. Has that characteristic Czech trick of vanishing down your throat before you even realize it. Leaves behind a slowly creeping, rich, floral bitterness.

Pours a perfectly clear pale golden hue with two fingers of sticky and fluffy white head that displays good retention and leaves sheets of sticky, patchy lace.

The nose is dominated by grassy hops, fresh leaves, a bit of spice and a touch of lemon. It seems basic with too much emphasis placed on the grassy hop character.

A clean citrus zest which is surprisngly more assertive in the taste than the nose would lead you to think, is the first thing to hit the palate and quickly paired with some leafy spice. The finish is where the grassy hops come in, imparting a raw, organic bitterness that seems to be a bit out of place.

Mouthfeel is light bodied, a bit wet, with a crisp finish and a decent amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is an average Czech pilsner that carries its most basic characteristics and doesn't strive to improve on them. With the abundance of pilsners readily available to me, this seems easy to pass up.

I hate neck foils. This bottle has a neck foil. Dammit, why? Anyways, this was a mediocre pilzner. Bought at the LCBO not really knowing what the style was(didn't say on the bottle). Poured typical pilzner style, that pale yellow gold. Knew right away it was a pilzner. Pathetic head that disipated too film. Bittersweet smell with little hops, some honey, and barley malt. Hey, this tastes alright. Not as bad as I was expecting from the look and smell. Well balanced sweet and bitterness, with a honey aftertaste. Not perfectly balanced, but a fine attempt was made. Slick mouthfeel and left my throat a little dry. Very drinkable. I'm glad it comes in 500mL bottles, because 341mL would be a tease for more.

Pours reasonably dark amber for a Pilsener. It attained and maintained a good frothy head with an adequate bead and lace
The smell and flavour were nothing remarkable tending to the sour side by the third bottle .
Tried chilling one right down and it was a better drink for doing so.
There are plenty of biscuity malts and not a lot else in this beer.
Pleasnat and drinkable especially as the days become longer and warmer

Poured a golden yellow with a slight head and a little lacing. Smell is a bit metallic, with some evidence of floral notes. Taste is pretty good, not overly bitter, a little sweet and an aroma of fresh barley in the finish. Pretty smooth and easy going which is actually not very characteristic of this style.

This is a good beer.

Medium gold in colour with lots of carbonation. Good aromas of honey-like malt, and both grassy and floral hops. That floral note is especially nice. The flavor is a bit of a letdown after the aroma, with more corse grassy notes entering the lightly malted mix, but the bitterness is at a good level for this style of beer. Overall, a fairly good pilsner.

I tried this beer after purchasing at my local LCBO store. It poured a somwehat cloudy gold colour, not translucent. The aroma was strong and malty with some grainy tones. It is slightly thick on the tongue with very little carbonation. The taste is slightly malty with a toasty aftertaste. This is another Czech beer I would have no problem trying again.

Golden yellow appearance with a thick head. The smell is sweet and a bit fruity and grainy.

The taste is thick and grainy. Definatly malty with grassy hops. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and a bit light bodied (most likely from the can).

Smooth beer, tasty and refreshing. Not an outstanding Pilsner but definatly respectable.

Pours a little darker than your average Pils. The colour is of a golden honey variety. Just from the pour it seems to have a little more backbone in the body. A fairly rich head that eventually thins out. The nose is hoppy and floral. The taste is nicely hoppy. A hint of honey sweetness in the middle but the taste ends on a hop/bitter finish w/lingering honey notes, which is quite pleasing. The mouthfeel of this beer leans towards the "rich and smooth" side as apposed to "crisp & clean".

I think if you're going to go for a euro-pils, might as well make it Kozel. it ranks right up there with Urquell and Czechvar for sure. Very drinkable.

Fuzzy little head, shy shy was thy head! All this over a pale yellow beer with appear to be quite boring and lifeless.

Smell is hoppy, watery and cerealic, nothing much, nothing to brag about, a fair normal macro lager.

Taste is crisp, hoppy, with good floral hops that comes to play with a great ceralic flavour and taste.

Clean golden pale in colour with a weak head but good carbonation.

Basic nose, but good for what it is. Malty/Grainy, watery and a slight hoppy tinge.

Again the palate it basic, but it is clean, fresh and tasty with a good bite and only a touch syrupy.

Easy drinking beer, with clean flavours and is a steal at only a couple of bucks for a 500 mL bottle.

Pale golden color, medium carbonation level, medium long-lasting creamy head.

Aroma herbal, floral, hoppy - an exciting one.

Start fresh, malty, not sweetish in any damn way. Body firm and round, with an exceptional balance of malts and hops. Mouthfeel smooth and delightful. Finish herbal and hoppy, with some acidity, aftertaste malty, long, heavenly.

Great beer from a great brewery. A must in Eastern Europe! Bottled version close, but no cigar...

Reviewed from notes

Tall can poured into a plastic cup

A: Clear golden color. Plenty of carbonation bubbles racing to the surface. Not much head retention, mostly a spotty film that lingered.

S: I mostly get an earthy smell from this one. Not much else. Maybe that's the hops?

T: Earthy taste with grass and a bit of hop bitterness. Aftertaste is a bit unpleasant.

M: Light bodied, foamy feel in the mouth. Not great.

O: I hope the style gets better than Kozel. I didn't enjoy this one.
