A - Pours with a golden hue body that's slightly orange. Has a frothy eggshell head that sticks around and has great lacing.

S - Has a muted smell to it. Granted I'm still picking up some brett, mild mild tartness and faint fruit.

T - A little more tart funk on the nose, but it's a mess flavor wise. It's like a bit of fruit (apple/peach), a bit of bourbon barrel, hint of vanilla and belgian yeast.

M - Medium bodied and high carbonation. A bit boozy with a dry finish.

O - Nice Belgian base beer. But, the execution is all wrong. The beer is a muddled mess flavor wise with no real aspect of the beer shining through.

Blend #5
A: This poured a hazy gold with some rocky white head.
S: It smelled like toasted coconut and vanilla and oak, with some caramel and nutty toffee.
T: It tasted like copper hops and caramel malt, with some oak and toasted coconut and vanilla. It had a clean bittersweet aftertaste with alcohol warming.
M: It was watery with lots of carbonation. Fizzy body.
D: This was a very basic strong ale with bourbon added. The scent and taste were a little boring, with very little Belgian character and basically no discernible Brett funk. I wish I could call it subtle and sophisticated, but I can't. The body was a little weak too, and the finish was hot. So it must be sipped, without much to savor. Age might help, but fresh was somewhat disappointing.

brooklyn has been putting out some really cool brews, and despite some recent accounts of pretension and obnoxiousness toward visitors to their facility, i continue to really enjoy their offerings. this one is a bourbon barrel aged wild brew, heavy on the bourbon, light on the wild. copper in color, rather clear, with minimal head or visible carbonation. looks rather still actually. the nose is gorgeous though, sticky toffee melts into kentucky bourbon, mellow corn whiskey with a familiar sweet vanilla finish. the bourbon dominates the grain, which is in the caramel family, but is lost to the spirit. the body is a little thin on this too, so maybe both problems could be abated with a larger malt bill. not to be too picky though, because this is delicious beer. the flavor has a cool yeast complexion, with a mix of belgian stone fruit flavors and drying brett over a sweeter beer. its subtly wild though, and comes across more as a belgian strong. the bourbon is there again in the finish, and i am surprised i never get much alcohol heat out of this. lots of oak though, and lots of that toffee character. tasty beer here, but one that would improve with more carbonation. curious to see how this one ages too...

750mL corked and caged bottle (Blend #2) poured into a Rastal Great Lakes 25th Anniversary Tulip glass.

Appearance: Hazy translucent gold-amber beer with an initial rocky thick white head. Died back to a persistent 1/8" head with persistent islands of lacing.

Smell: Fine/good bourbon notes - not the cheapo bourbon, but the good stuff aged for awhile. Some fruity esters and just a hint of mustiness under it all after a swirl. Mostly bourbon + vanilla notes.

Taste: Bourbon bite up front, some fruity esters + Belgian yeast notes, earthy bitter finish morphing quickly into a bourbon whiskey finish (vanilla, oak, sweet sour mash bourbon)

Mouthfeel: Slick, light carbonation, does not stick to teeth, some warming from the alcohol, but mild.

Overall / Drinkability: After reading what makes a Wild Ale per style notes here on BA, I really couldn't tell you if this is a wild ale or not. I think I would call it a good Belgian ale aged in Bourbon barrels though. The bourbon is the main theme of this beer, but it's not overpowering. Bourbon complements the solid Belgian ale. The alcohol though, while hidden (no harsh alcohol notes) does let you know pretty early on that it's present. Glad I tried it, but one big glass is enough per evening. Went well with steak, rice, and salad. From some of the other notes I've read on BA, it appears that this is a beer you'll really like, or just not find that impressive. Maybe that's the point, as wild ales are not for everyone. Some people really like them and others can't stand them. Definitely a beer that made me think while I drank it.

Ale aged in bourbon barrels. “Belgian inspired golden ale”. Smells like wood and a little bit of whiskey. The small head dissipates to flat in a few minutes. Very noticeable taste of wood and whiskey. Some bitterness. Earthy. It tastes like a beer at cold temp. At room temp this is not a beer. Strong but it has a learning curve, you either like it or love it but not hate it. It was worth $20.
