2012 version. Popped open on a cold winter night after taking the dog for a walk. Looks copper with reddish hues. Tight foamy head that settles to a thin layer. Smells like sherry with candied fruit and some cardboard. Age almost lends it a red wine character. Upfront sweetness that reminds me of carmelized brown sugar. Thick, chewy mouthfeel that finishes with some chocolate notes. Hop aroma and flavors have faded mostly, but ample bitterness remains. Alcohol seems well in check. A nice sipper of a beer that holds up fairly well in age.

Should note that I kept this bottle in my basement where the temps range from 60Fto high 70s.

2012 vintage, had in 2014.
Dark orange to amber pour, small white head quick to a thin lace, not too sticky.
Smells tasty with lots of fig and berry jam, overripe oranges and juicy mashed dark fruit (overripe dark grapes, plums), laced with honey and a bit of caramel maltiness. Some nice fruit cake spices, no apparent booze, this should be nice.
Caramel dominates, with a nice rich sweet malty backbone that manages to support a nice diverse fruitiness: juicy gooseberries, cherry plum, raspberries, a bit of sour cherries, some cooked red apple, sweet orange pulp and bitter peel, raisin, faint dates and figs. Alcohol is warm, a bit more present than in the nose, but not boozy and not nearly showing the 10% abv. Brings a nice sherry feel also, touch of scotch whisky too with a nice dry feel especially towards the end. Nice spices like vanilla, pepper and marzipan. Hops are strong in the finish with a rather big bitterness, dry, grassy, sprucey, herbal, that manages to cut off any cloying sweetness. What is left is a nice fruity hoppy aftertaste, with some palate-pinching alcohol.
Medium body, bit syrupy and almost flat.
Pretty sure this one ages really good. It seems they don't make it anymore, so be sure to hang on to any bottles you can find. A really great barleywine.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle (2012) to a snifter glass.

A: Medium brown color, hazy with just a slight ring of foam.
S: Sweet plum, cherry, and citrus. Dark and sweet malts.
T: Sweet dark fruit and candy like flavors start out the palate. Toasted malts take over the back half of the taste.
M: Full mouthfeel.
O: My first barleywine. Nice flavor.

Have been enjoying the 2012 Monster Ale. Age has done it quite tasting yet. Rich caramel malts, yet still a full hop profile. Was proud to share this on NYE and everyone was impressed.
