We’d heard of Australia, of course: that it was a land of great surfing, sharks of unfortunate size, Vegemite (?!), and friendly people carrying very large knives. But until a few years ago, no one told us about all the great Australian craft brewing happening, much of it done by our friends at Mountain Goat Beer. So, Brooklyn brewer Al Duvall and lab manager Tom Price went down to Australia to visit Mountain Goat and collaboratively brew the cross-breed named Hopfweizenbock.
Now it’s the Goat Crew’s turn for the 24-hour airplane trips to Brooklyn, as we bring you Ridgy-Didge, a strong saison with a distinctly Australian edge. We start the party with malt and a little candy sugar, and then rev it up with two native Australian flavors— startlingly aromatic lemon myrtle leaves, and kicky Tasmanian pepperberries. After fermentation by our house Belgian yeast, the final touch is a light dry-hopping with the Australian hop variety Super Pride of Ringwood. The tasty result is a honey-colored beer with a lean, dry, hoppy palate and a bright, refreshingly lemony finish. This beer is a superstar at the summer dinner table, especially with grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon, and burgers.

On tap at Muddy Waters in Minneapolis. 10 oz. serving in a chalice glass.
Appearance: Color is a hazy golden orange. Fair amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head that slowly fades into a thin patchy layer.
Smell: A sweet, yeasty, and fruity Belgian style aroma with good hints of fruits and spice. Belgian yeast with with big hints of the pepperberry along with some clove and farmhouse funk. Sweet hints of Belgian candied sugar. Big hints of bubblegum. Lots of fruit esters with hints of banana, lemon, orange, and green apple. Soft pale malt with hints of straw, grains, and cracker. Subtle earthy hop hints of grass. A pretty solid aroma.
Taste: Like the smell hints at, a fruity, sweet, and yeasty Saison taste with good notes of fruit and spice. Belgian style yeast with big upfront spice notes of the pepperberry along with some clove and farmhouse funk. Big taste of bubblegum and banana giving a Hefeweizen like twist. Also good fruit notes of lemon, orange, and green apple. Sweet notes of Belgian candied sugar. Bready pale malt with notes of grains, straw, and cracker. Also some honey like notes.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. Spicy, juicy, and sweet but fairly drying on the finish. Nicely smooth.
Overall: A pretty good twist on a Saison. Good mix of spices and fruit esters with a nice dose of bubblegum.

Strong saison. Those pepperberry & lemon notes not coming through super strong. Maybe that's a good thing? Awesome color; so red. It's not what I think of in a saison but OK.
