I remember when this first appeared. There was no indication on the label as to the abv and I went through two bottles on a scorching summer day before it started to appear. I was into my third, was kicking back and really starting to dissect the flavors. Wow what a buzz. I can't understand the lack of love for this trailblazer. When it showed up it had little company and what was there wasn't much. Great taste, great everything IMO.
A good looking white head and respectable lacing to go with a clear copper fluid.
Keeping style in mind this beer has a great aroma. Heck, it just smells good to me period. A mildly sweet and delectable malt backbone is layered with a a healthy hop blend of earthy and herbal notes. Caramel and light toffee anchor the malt to a firm bready base that features a dark sourdough. There is a unique pungency that sets it apart. Fragrant and satisfying this one.
Taste is full of caramel malt that stays on the front of your tongue and a firm astringent bitterness that parks on the back and sides. While the malt features caramel and light toffee there is an underlying breadinesss that makes a good stage for the hops to step up and enjoy the spotlight. Hop oiliness is a feature of the finish but leading up to that is a fresh bouquet of leafy hops, herbal hops, earthy hops. A hint of mint. This is so different from an American IPA in that the hops are not quite front and center but all the while they are the star and require sophistication to appreciate. Adolescents will miss the point on this one and that's OK. Come back when you grow up. Feel is creamy and just a bit lighter than I remember the initial bottling. Maybe nothing has changed, which would explain why I was able to quaff two so quickly way back. Either way this is a superb summer ale that is scrubs the mouth dry while it caresses at the same time.
Super drinkable as the alcohol is well integrated and never peeks out. This is at the head of the line for refreshment and enjoyment in the heat to the warmer months just like the English soldiers did when the style was birthed.

Nice english IPA of a hazy orange/ocher color that goes to a yellowish tone in the corners of the glass. Foam is ok.
Smell and taste are full of citrus, specially lemon, orange and grapefruit. Pear and apple tones also appear and that makes this beer quite juicy. Maltiness, bitterness and hoppines are at an ok level but could be higher, specially maltiness.
Body is ok too. Didn't enjoy the mouthfeel too much because of the acidity that comes in corners of the lips.
