12 fl oz bottle purchased in Japan, best before Sep 2009.
Appearance: Dark amber with a mostly-white receding head and not much lacing. Very slightly cloudy (definitely filtered though) with low carbonation - just a few fine bubbles.
Smell: Very rich aromas for the style: date notes in the hops, a candied sugar element from the malt, other aromas of grape juice, the fresh grain smell of a field of cereal crops, and others that I can't identify. Very complex, very unusual.
Taste: While this is not one of those beers whose smell vastly outweighs the flavour in the mouth that follows, the taste still seems relatively restrained compared to the smell. This is probably ulitmately a good thing, since it would be packed with overpowering malt sweetness and hop floridity - rather, it is restrained to the point where it becomes an easy drinking beer, albeit one with plenty to hold your interest. Sharp sweetness on the tip of the tongue and sides of the mouth, a hop harshness on the palate, and almost none of the tantalising fruitiness that is offered in the bouquet, for better or worse. Easy drinking, satisfying, and leaving no unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth at all.
Mouthfeel: creamy and frothy, with no unpleasant dryness in the mouth after swallowing. Perfectly appropriate for a beer like this.
Drinkability: A fine beer that I'd drink as many of as I were permitted to and then some. A no-bullshit beer that delivers what it promises.
Overall: When I make it to New York one day there's not a chance I'll miss out on sampling this brew. This is a fine beer and a solid representation of a classic style.
