'THIS MONSTER WAS BORN IN 2008'. It's been carefully stored in my damp, dark 50F cement cellar since its purchase. Waited for a special day (New Beer Sunday - 6th Anniv.) in honor of a few outstanding traders and purveyors; maximum12, beertunes and unclejedi.

Pours into my wide mouth stemmed Ayinger chalice a ruddy, deep copper with ruby hues. The loose off-white heads wanes to a mere 1/4" after several minutes. Very sparse visible uprising carbonation. Nice white sharply pointed dripping rings of lace all the way down.

Smells very rich and a bit pungent with a slightly boozy mulled apple cider/hot toddy-type thing going on. Very vinous and somewhat tart, almost Chiristmas-y.

Taste is immediately warm and a bit hoppy. To a tame tongue, one might say it stings a little - but not me. The vinous qualities in the nose reflect somewhat earthy and slightly charred in the taste. Deep, dark fruits are evident and the booze is a bit more tasted and not as much (warmth) is felt.

Mouthfeel is about medium bodied and very light, and somewhat still feeling on (non) carbonation. There are fine, tingly bubbles felt on the edges of the tongue as the flavors start to fade, which takes a bit longer than your average barleywine. A spicy, chalky finish ends the scene.

Drinkability is a tad rough, for my taste. It's very flavorful, but a bit harsh for my palate, IMHO.

Overall a barleywine that packs a big umph, but doesn't seem to be very multi-dimensional. The hops keep the warming qualities varied, which I guess makes it feel layered in texture. I can see why people look forward to this annual release, but I don't think I'd rush out to raid the stash if given the opportunity. Have lots of presence, just kinda one note though. But a big, booming note it is!

This bottle was "born in 2011" and poured into a tulip glass.

A- Medium garnet medium clarity small off-white head that dissipated quickly.

S- Lots of sweet malts, raisins noticeable alcohol smell but not too much.

T- Not as sweet as I thought it would be, the alcohol comes out more but their is no real warming in the throat, it's mostly on the tongue. Got a bit unpleasant yeast bitterness on the finish.

M- Not too thick, pretty nice.

O- I picked a bottle of this up because I know they stopped brewing it. A pretty good barleywine for the price, although Bigfoot is a better option. Glad I tried it and thought the aroma was great.

Found some of this in the local shop and bought it. I liked it.

Poured a hazy orange with golden yellow highlights. A stream of effervescence and a thin head of tan foam that fell fast. Nose is malty and breaddy with some brown sugar. Some hop floral to really entice and a bit of spice. dark fruits like figs.

The taste was malty and breaddy. Soft with a full mouthfeel. Fruity on the back end. The carmel was lovely. There was citrus and citrus zest grass, bread, juiciness and a hoppy and drying finish with a lovely bitter. This was nectar. Good texture and a lovely drink. Why is it discontinued?

I was able to pick uo 2 -4 pks of the 2012 vintage at a great price of $9 4pk,at Cork and Bottle.Always have liked the taste of this English Barleywine Style,ABV is always well hidden and subtle, the malt background shines on this beer.Sorry that this beer was retired By Brooklyn.Appearance has a amber color with a low head retention but typical of this style.Overall a nice beer and a good introduction to the English barleywine style.Cheers
