Went to the brewery specifically to try this beer. According to Garrett Oliver, BLAST! is named after his first batch of homebrew. It is a brewery only release of about 25-30 kegs. I see one keg made it to the BT, though.
Pours a clear golden amber hue with a white, tense and sticky dence head. Minimal lacing - probably due to the plastic cup. Settles into a small layer of foam throughout the glass.
Smell/aroma and taste of floral, pine and citrus flavors. Very hoppy indeed, but backed with enough malt so it is not too bitter. This medium to full-bodies beer definitely has an alcohol-warming effect. Very drinkable for an 8% beer. It reminded me a lot of DFH's 90 Minute IPA in alot of aspects. Ahtanum, Cascade, East Kent Golding, Northdown, and Palisade hops among others were used. I heard 7 varieties in all were used.
This was the second weekend it was served at the brewery, including their block party last week, so I do not know how many kegs are left.

Bottle from Gary's
Pours a slightly hazy deep straw color with a decent sized creamy bubbly white head that slowly dissipates. Aromas of orange, earth. pine, and resin with a solid light sweet sugary maltiness to back it up. The flavor is quite sweet like the aroma suggested with sweet sugar covered oranges and apricots. The earthy pine is less prevalent in the flavor as is the bitterness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Its got some nice flavors and I'm guessing most of the fruit flavors might be hop derived. Needs more attenuation and more bitterness.

This reveiw is based on a draft enjoyed on my birthday at Max's in Baltimore. It has an average appearance: light amber body crowned by a thin head. It offers a caramel nose and a mildy sweet molasses bite with a quick hoppy finish at the end.
Nice balance with moderate carbonation - and suprisingly smooth for a beer of this caliber. Sometime next year I gotta get up to Brooklyn and visit this place, one of America's finest craft breweries. Nuff said. Forgeddaboutit!
