12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a beautiful golden color. The head is about a finger high with an eggshell shade. Its texture is rough and its retention is poor. And almost no lacing is left on the glass, either. At least it has a great body...

S: Dangerously bland. Just touches of butter, caramel, and citrus are coming through. The nose actually gets weaker as it warms. Not off to a great start, are we?

T: Touches of citrus hops appear initially. Some malt enters the midtaste, and the finish brings back some citrusy notes, along with a twinge of fruit punch. Nothing fantastic, but better than the nose.

M: Light and dry - the maltiness doesn't get in the way of its crisp finish. The carbonation seems weak at first, but sneaks up on the palate.

O: If nothing else, this would be a decent lunch beer. It's inoffensive, drinkable, and would pair well with a good sandwich. And that's its biggest problem: it's insipid. There's no excitement to be found here (not to mention the nose is almost nonexistent); on the flip side, it lives up to its "Summer Ale" moniker by being an acceptable hot weather refresher. I'd never refuse one, but I won't buy it again.

Decided to give this a whirl after a friend brought it over to my place. The results were certainly disappointing, especially given that this is billed as an English Pale Ale, something different stylistically than what we're all used to when it comes to summer beers. So what went wrong here? Read on:

Appearance (3.25/5): Hazy golden/orange hue, nice color, with a one finger, fairly minimal pure white head of foam. The head disappointingly fizzles out quickly, leaving a ring around the circumference of the glass. Ah, there was promise for a second.

Smell (2.5/5): Simple aroma of citrus hops, a light bit of crackery malt, and a touch of honey. Not much more to it than that. I was hoping for a little more assertive hop profile.

Taste (2/5): As simple as the aroma. An all too brief stab of citrus hops is followed by a honey-like malty sweetness, finishing sweet and semi-dry, but without much flavor to speak of at all.

Mouthfeel (1/5)l: This is where the beer falls flat on its face. It has disastrously low carbonation levels, which robs it of any vigor. The mouthfeel is insipid, making the beer feel unfinished. I am left seriously wanting. Also, with such a light body, I’m not getting much in the way of crispness. This beer needs retooling.

Overall (2/5): Brooklyn Summer Ale is just not a very good beer; for me it epitomizes the problems with summer beer. Its light body and light flavor are simply not interesting; inadequate carbonation only makes things worse. The 80 on BA and the style listing being English Pale Ale is a quite deceptive. This is mediocre to bad beer that doesn't even get the simple task of quenching one's thirst right.

A: Very light in color. Lots of large bubbles moving to the surface (like a fresh poured Sprite). Forms a 1 finget head that quickly recedes. Best by date is unreadable.

S: Smells like a wheat beer - that style. Malts, breadiness and some sweetness.

T: Very much a Belgian wheat flavor. Lots of malty-breadiness. No noticeable hop presence.

M: The carbonation is right. Decent mouthfeel.

O: This is a summer session ale. It has good mouthfeel - unfortunately I am not a fan of the wheat beer style and flavor. I am sure this would appeal to people that like this style and want to have a few beers on a hot day.
