Now Quaffing: Brooklyn Local 1

I received this sample from my local distributor well before the beer was officially available in my area. Not sure how much time this has had in the bottle. As a fan of the Brooklyn Brewery in general, I am eager to try anything new they have to offer. Add to that the fact that this beer undergoes 100% refermentation and carbonation in the bottle, and this one should not be missed. Pours a pale straw golden yellow with a tightly knit head. The head recedes quickly, but there is nice lacing. Aromas are subtle--light grains and a little banana. The taste is no less than exceptional. Esters, grains, hops, carbonation--everything works together here for a common cause. The mouthfeel is somewhat slick and creamy, with just the right amount of carbonation to give a little prickle on the palate. I can't get over how much this beer reminds me of a more refined DeRanke XX Bitter. Similar malt and hop profiles with less emphasis on being bitter and more focus on balance. While so many breweries miss when it comes to Belgian Style ales, this offering from Brooklyn is spot on.

Bottle shared with Matt at Good Luck.

Pours a golden yellow, with a vigorous 1.5 inch head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like citrus and apple, with a slight wiff of Belgian yeast, a lot weaker than I would've expected. Smells pretty sugary.

This doesn't have quite the typical Belgian bite I'd expect from a BSPA, or even a "strong saison," as Garrett Oliver apparently calls it. The yeast is incredibly muted, but under the typical yeast flavors you'd get in a beer like this is a fairly pedestrian brew. Citrusy, but just sort of...flat.

This one is light bodied, with a low amount of carbonation, which is different for a beer of this style. Fairly drinkable.

Overall, just boring. Blah. Not a whole lot to talk about here.

Appearance- This beer pours a massively fizzy head with good retention. Could audibly hear the bubbles popping and crackling in the tulip glass. Light yellow color, hugely carbonated.

Smell- Another reviewer had mentioned cantaloupe and he was spot on, this smells just like it. Light honey and clove aroma also present.

Taste- Yeast dominates the palate. Slight bitterness and traces of funk. Lingering sweetness from the pale malts provides many similarities to Champagne or sparkling wine.

Mouthfeel- Extremely, EXTREMELY dry despite the sweetness. One of the driest beers I have tried recently. The carbonation in this beer is quite extreme, and it shows itself in the mouthfeel.

Overall this was a good beer but it probably won't ever make it into my rotation of Belgians to buy regularly.

A: Foggy golden with tons of fine carbonation, 3 fingers of light yellow tinged white head. Good retention.

S: Sweet and caramel like, light fruity and floral qualities. Daisies, and cantelope.

T: Belgian yeast, light lemon tartness, la fair amount of sweetness, sight bitterness on the finish. Really hides the alcohol, and is much like a white wine in dryness. Sharp cheddar like quality.

M: A lot of fine bubbled carbonation, a little thickness to the body, but it comes across as light, airy and dry. Really well done.

O: An excellent brew. Great mouth feel, very mellow in taste, definitely a Belgian style beer. Bought in Boca Raton, drank on Deerfield Beach, July 15, 2014.
