Poured into a Duvel tulip, it’s very, very dark opaque brown color with an insanely huge 3-4 finger foamy off white head that was full of bubbles like a bubble bath, and dissipated very slowly, leaving excellent trails of foamy lacing.
Smells very herbal and bready, with the yeast and dark fruits coming on the strongest up front; the orange peel listed on the label comes through, but the honey does not. After a swirl the nose presents cherry, light caramel, biscuit, coriander, brown sugar, tart or sour fruit, citrus like lemon zest, funky yeast, wet cardboard, light hops, booze and grains. It almost smells like it was barrel aged, but that might be the yeast and booze acting like a nasal mirage.
Tastes malty up front, with the yeast, orange peel and booze immediately following, and then dark fruits like cherry, red grapes and plum, orange peel, caramel, biscuit, cocoa powder, brown sugar, coriander, pepper, lemon zest, funky yeast/wet cardboard, light hops, some other mild spices, booze like a red wine or rum and wet roasted beer soaked grains. Once again the honey does not come to the party, but the tart or sour fruit adds some nice flavors to balance out the yeast and booze. The alcohol is noticeable, but seems well orchestrated and as if it was always scheduled to be part of the experience.
Mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth, with light fizzy carbonation, a medium chewy body, and a very complex finish that is tart and sweet and boozy and bitter at the same time; the chaos theory was unleashed in a beer glass and consumed much to my delight.
I always liked the Local 1 better, but this is a very good beer that I have enjoyed over the years. I sat on this bottle for a year to see how it would age and it was very tasty and enjoyable. I have at least one Local 1 and one Local 2 per year and always enjoy them.
